Bengaluru: 'I am Gauri' - Thousands including noted activists, journos protest Lankesh murder

Bengaluru, Sep 12 (IANS): Thousands of social activists, journalists, people's forums and various political party workers from across the country on Tuesday held a protest meet at Central College Grounds here to condemn the murder of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh.

A 'resistance meeting' was held here where renowned journalists, activists and thinkers from demanded that the Karnataka government "hastens" the Special Investigation Team's (SIT) probe into the murder.A

The 55-year-old editor of Kannada weekly tabloid by her name "Gauri Lankesh Patrike" was gunned down by unidentified men outside her home in the city suburbs on September 5.

Those present at the protest venue included CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, noted social activist Medha Patkar, journalists P. Sainath and Sagarika Ghose and civil rights activist Kavita Krishnan among others.

Lankesh's family members, mother Indira Lankesh and brother Indrajit Lankesh were also present.

A commemorativeAedition of the Kannada tabloid "Gauri Lankesh Patrike" was launched at the venue.

Addressing the gathering, Patkar questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on the killing.

"Why is the Prime Minister of the country silent on Gauri Lankesh killing even after a week?" she asked.

Sainath said: "The killings aren't over. There will be more, unless we stop them. What we're up against is the largest machine of hate."

Protesting journalists, activists and thinkers came out with a list of demands/decisions pertinent to Lankesh's killing through a statement.

"The inquiry which is underway through the SIT formed by the state government should hasten and complete its enquiry and identify the powers behind the murder," said the statement.

"We are all witness to how several organisations and individuals affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Hindu Jagarana Vedike, Vishva Hindu Parishad et al have been celebrating Gauri Lankesh's murder," the protesters said.

"We at the resistance meeting condemn this inhuman behaviour, which is not supported by any religious teachings.

"Gauri Lankesh was murdered only to silence the voice of humanity and democratic struggles that she represented," the statement said.

"Those of us here would like to tell her murderers loud and clear: 'I am Gauri, we are all Gauri'," it added.A

Wearing black head bands that read "I am Gauri", the protesters took out the march from the city railway station to the Central College Grounds.

Members of the Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninist-Liberation, Karnataka Janashakthi, Aam Aadmi Party and several student groups were also part of the rally.

Those protesting were seen singing protest songs, raising slogans like "Gauri Lankesh Amar Rahe" (Long live Gauri Lankesh) and demanding that Lankesh's assailants be brought to book.

The progressive forum "Gauri Lankesh Hatya Virodhi Vedike" took out the rally.

"The forum of progressive thinkers, writers, social activists, artistes and intellectuals was formed last Friday to fight against Lankesh killing and decided to hold the national-level 'resistance convention' here," the forum convenor K. Leela had told reporters on Monday.

The theme is "I am Gauri", but the content is "Abuse Modi/RSS"..

By including fraudsters like sagarika, teesta, kavita in their team, the protest has already lost credibility..

I awesome that not a word against Siddu govt which is directly responsible for law & order. Buddi jeevis in the true sense....

We see only protests and there is no follow up action on many such incidents.

    1. Gruesome incidents like Nirbhaya happened in capital of our country, people across the country protested. But we still rape incidents all over the country, some are reported, many do not even get reported.
    2. Protests has only turned out to be political motives. But incidents continue to happen.
    3. Child murders happen like everywhere in country but things have not improved at all. Schools and school buses are also not safe.
    4. There will be no protests if the deceased is not popular or from a rural village. There is not even an ambulance to lift the body.
    5. There is should be comprehensive approach to stop all the crimes rather than going by individual cases approach.

How the hatred for other religion has blinded the commentators here and have turned judge jury without trial nor investigation. Their hate for BJP is nothing but hate from within inside for the religion they represent and the fact that they just cannot digest the fact that they are in power. A mask of secularism with a burning desire of communalism inside... very disturbing..

    Let me answer your questions...

    1. As far as I know, there are no goons available in BJP, RSS, HJV, SP, BD, ABVP. Even if anyone shows the nature of goon, he will be given gate pass in these organization without any soft corner. By the way, I am not sure why you expect goons to attend the program.
    2. If Prime Minister has to answer every killing in India,, he has to spend whole day in typing condolence messages. Don't expect this kind of work fro Prime Minister of India. By default, all PMs of India has/had great concern over every killing (irrespective of their ideology) that takes place.
    3. If someone is celebrating this murder, that is none other than left parties. They got an opportunity to sow new seeds of hatred between communities. News itself says Indrajit Lankesh (a BJP/RSS ideologue) is very much present in the condolence program.

By the way, what were you doing in Mangalore? You should have attended the condolence program rather sitting in Mangalore and doing nothing.

Rightly said Santhu Mumbai/Udupi, why so delay in catching criminals, CCtv recorded that killers move and in Bangalore most of the places CCtv cameras are there.. home and police department should take right & fast action to catch the criminals. No need to blame any party first & foremost step is catch the killers.

No need to participate in this type of event
Even her bror is saying due to her Naxalites connection she was killed by same
If Gauri is true rationalist why she was cremated as per lingayath custom?
Further if her relatives r approving her thinking why they followed all customs

Because her Bro wants a suitable position or award from BJP government (central) like Anupum Kher he got Padma award just praising PM. yeh Sab kursi ka khel hai bhaiyya in current Indian politics for securing that no bhaiyya or behena. When Gauri mother refused CBI investigation and this fellow demanding CBI investigation it means he does not have cordial relationship with his family that’s why she is staying with her daughters not with him.
