Nitish Kumar dumps RJD, Congress; to form government with BJP

Updated

Patna/New Delhi, Jul 26 (IANS): In dramatic developments in Bihar, Nitish Kumar on Wednesday resigned as Chief Minister dumping the RJD and Congress to stitch a new alliance with BJP, which quickly announced support to a new government under him and said it will join it too.

Nitish Kumar, whose resignation was immediately accepted by Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, is expected to stake claim to form the new government on Thursday in which Sushil Kumar Modi is likely to return as Deputy Chief Minister.

Ending a 20-month-long coalition of the Grand Alliance that defeated the BJP in 2015, Nitish Kumar met the Governor in the evening and handed his resignation claiming he can't work in the "current circumstances" following corruption charges against Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav -- son of RJD chief Lalu Prasad.

But he didn't rule out a tie-up with the BJP to run a future government. As if in synchronization, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Nitish Kumar's resignation, the BJP announced its support to the JD-U leader, Bihar BJP leaders had dinner with Nitish Kumar and then gave a letter of support to the Governor -- all in a matter of three hours.

"I have been doing my best to provide good governance... But the circumstances have so developed that it was difficult for a person like me to continue to be in power. That is why I met the Governor and gave my resignation," he told reporters outside Raj Bhavan.

He was initially evasive about taking support from the Bharatiya Janata Party. "What has to happen has happened. What will happen now you keep watching. We will definitely keep Bihar's interest in mind and do what is good for Bihar and its people," he said.

Nitish Kumar did not recommended the dissolution of the assembly, indicating his readiness to work with the BJP.

Shortly after Prime Minister Modi welcomed the developments in Bihar, BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said his party was against mid-tern polls.

"Many many congratulations to Nitish Kumar for joining the fight against corruption. 125 crore citizens of the country welcome and support this honest move," the Prime Minister tweeted.

"It is the need of the hour to rise above political differences for the bright future of Bihar and unite in the fight against corruption," he added.

Nitish Kumar responded: "I am thankful to Narendra Modi for supporting the decision I took."

The BJP Parliamentary Board quickly met in Delhi and appointed a three-member committee of Bihar leaders to study the situation.

Then Sushil Modi announced that the BJP would support Nitish Kumar to form a new government in which it would be the junior partner.

"We will support the government under the leadership of Nitish Kumar. The BJP legislature party has full confidence in Nitish Kumar as its leader. The decision has also been conveyed to Nitish Kumar which he has accepted," Sushil Modi said.

Ever since the CBI filed cases of corruption against Tejashwi Yadav, his father Lalu Prasad and sister Misa Yadav, pressure had been mounting on the Chief Minister to sack his deputy.

But any action against the Deputy Chief Minister could have evoked the wrath of the RJD, whose support was vital for Nitish Kumar.

In the 243-member assembly, the RJD has 80 MLAs, the JD-U 71 and Congress 27. The BJP has 53 MLAs and its allies LJP 2, RLSP 2 and HAM 1. There are four independents and four MLAs belong to the CPI-ML.

The JD-U and BJP together make up for 124 seats and with BJP allies the total could go up to 129, clearly crossing the half-way mark.

Nitish Kumar ran a coalition government with the BJP earlier. But he severed ties with it after it announced Narendra Modi as its Prime Ministerial candidate.

Giving reasons for his decision to quit on Wednesday, Nitish Kumar said that with a slew of corruption charges, he expected Tejashwi Yadav to give an explanation that could have formed the basis for his continuing in office.

"I waited so that we could have found a way out but nothing of the sort happened. The charges were against a member of the government. I was not in a position to do anything. There was no basis for the government to function.

"In such a situation, it was not possible for the government to function. I heeded to the call of my conscience and decided to resign."

He said he told Lalu Prasad, Congress leader C.P. Joshi and the JD-U Legislature Party about his decision to resign.

He said he faced a lot of criticism for supporting demonetisation, which had caught the people's imagination, and back Ram Nath Kovind -- "who had done a good job as Governor of Bihar and whose becoming the President was a matter of pride for the state".

RJD chief Lalu Prasad said the developments were "pre-planned" and accused Nitish Kumar of being in league with Narendra Modi and the RSS. He said Nitish Kumar resigned not because of Tejashwi Yadav but due to a murder case against him.

Lalu Prasad also suggested that the legislators of the JD-U, RJD and Congress should elect a new leader minus Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav to form a new government.

Lalu would have done some compromise with Nithish. Now finished everything. By the way, what Congress will do for 2019 election??

You are speaking as if India was built since 2014. Before that may be you were in some Jungle and were living in trees as all the developments in india happened in 2014 onwards.

Come on pal, no matter few among them might be curropt but not to forget they built India from scratch with whatever leftover. Progress doesnt happen in a year or two.

Tell me who are not curropt these days, right from Chaprasi to Ministers, public to private sectors almost all looks currupt and support favourism.... Atleast these currupt party which you blame, is thousand times better than your communal party, where the former mint money but the later one sucks the blood, kill fellow countrymen, loot them, rape them, burn houses and shops.

Now you decide which is better, a peaceful communal free India or only curropt free India. Ofcourse one would choose both, but that will be far from reality in today's greedy world.

I personally feel the concept of Democracy is a s**. It has no moral values. More then freedom it brings in destruction. Election rights should never be to all citizens as they misuse their power by voting based on favouring a candidate, Religion, Caste, Money, Fear etc as a result any criminal, Communal, unworthy, corrupt gets elected to lead a country.

The best way is to allow certain number of qualified noble & humble selected men & women to choose the right candidates for the post based on their good clean background. Thus we can expect clean persons ruling the state and country. This way all the greedy, power hungry morons will be thrown out.

Regarding Nitish Kumar resigning, it was well scripted act and BJP can go to any level for its benefit. It has lobbied Nitish since long ago for the power. This was bound to happen.

Well played FEKUji...! Congratulation for mission accomplishment !!!

Tejaswi Yadav was just made 'Bali ka bakra' in BJP's game plan... actually this game started around 2 months back, when FEKU invited Nithish for dinner & Nithish happily went and had biriyani with FEKU. Accusation & CBI raid on Tejaswi made just 2 weeks ago, as planned!

Next is West Bengal, where BJP is trying hard to ignite fire among communities and pull Mamta Govt down.
Then the target will be Delhi, where most of the AAP MLAs being harassed with pointless cases, so that they can leave Kejriwal and join team FEKU/DAKU. They are also trying to pull Kumar Viswas to their camp to lead & he can anytime join BJP.

Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu will be little bit tough for BJP, until and unless there is Donkey trading made in billions of amount.

Nitish Kumar is not only the honest but smartest politician of India. He knows that by this move he has killed not 2 but several birds in one shot. His image on National platform will be solidified further. If mid term elections were to be held in Bihar , he will romp home with clear mandate. Even if BJP offers outside support then also Congress'' support will still be needed for carrying ahead the present government. All in all this is the smartest move of today and Nitish Kumat is all advantage. ..

This is not the first Bihar CM Nitish Kumar changed the partner as per his political convenience. This man seems to be having ambition at national level with highest post. By continuing in Mahagathbandhan it won't materialise soon.
If corruption is the issue BJP and RJD are in same. But for BJP corruption doesn't seems to be problem when accepting or rejecting partner.
Two years ago, on July 21, 2015, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released a booklet at a meeting of party MPs in New Delhi with the title ‘Water Supply Scam 2010 in Goa and Guwahati’.The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP booklet alleged that Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was the minister in charge of the Guwahati Development Department (GDD) in what was then the Congress government in Assam, was a “key suspect” in the scam related to a Guwahati water supply project which involved services hired from the American multinational construction management company, Louis Berger International Inc. Former CM Yeddyurappa in Karnataka who is now on bail from jail in the denotification and mining kickback is the front runner for CM position.
In Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh’s alleged involvement in a Rs 36,000-crore scam in a scheme for supplying rice through the public distribution system. The spectre of the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam has come back to hound the Bharatiya Janata Party. In what has been panning out as a wrestling match between the BJP and the Congress, the emergence of documents that indict the BJP-led Chhattisgarh government for a dubious deal with the Italian helicopter company BJP is now on the back foot.Maharashtra Tribal development Minister Vijay Kumar Gavit was indicted in the Rs 6,000 crore tribal development scam, he is yet to face any action. A former Congress-NCP government minister, Gavit has since switched over to the BJP. It may be multi million coas scam in Jharkhand or Vyapam scam in MP all BJP Chief minister safely holding the power.

On Demonetization, President election he stood with Modi. He have no right to continue in opposition camp.
