Shivamogga woman slips into coma while scuba diving in Hawaii

Shivamogga, Jul 4: A married woman from here, during the tour of Hawaii, opted to undertake scuba diving. During this under-water experience, she consumed copious amount of water and slipped into coma. As per information received, she is comatose since four days.

Seetharamakrishna, software engineer working for Yahoo.com at San Jose, California, had undertaken trip to picturesque Hawaii islands in USA along with wife, Shruti (20), when tragedy struck. During scuba diving there underwater, Shruti went through this harrowing experience.

Shruti, daughter of Vishwanath from Lakkavalli in Chikkamagaluru district, had married Seetharamakrishna from Vijayawada a year back. The couple, who had settled down in California, took off for a week to be able to undertake trip to Hawaii.

During the period she was scuba diving on June 30, the oxygen pipe worn by Shruti fell off, depriving her of oxygen supply. Water then entered her lungs. Although expert divers plunged into action and brought her out of water immediately, Shruti had already slipped into coma by then. The doctors, it is said, have advised Seetharamakrishna to get her parents to Hawaii soon as they hope that the lady might respond to their voices and gain consciousness. However, Vishwanath and his wife have not been able to travel to USA as they do not possess passports. Seetharamakrishna has approached officials of Indian Embassy at USA for help.

Vishwanath met additional deputy commissioner of the district, Dr M Lokesh, and explained to him the problem. The official asked the couple to file application under Tatkal scheme. In addition, he also spoke to regional passport officer and requested him to arrange for immediate issuance of passport. The family also met MP, B S Yeddyurappa, and explained to him their predicament.

Yeddyurappa said that he has spoken to passport officials and also minister for external affairs, Sushma Swaraj. He said that the couple would be able to undertake journey to Hawaii in a couple of days. The couple's passport interview has been set for Tuesday July 4.

Swimming or diving inside water takes a lot of practice. I've been doing it for the past 3 years and I can see the improvement every passing year & now I can dive & swim under water for the full length of the pool. I make sure that I do heavy gym before going for dive in the pool as heart & mind needs to be very strong. It has nothing to do with having food before swim. One has to be bold enough for dive & swim under water. But in Shruti's case it is the oxygen pipe which came off. I hope & pray that she recovers soon.

Similiar incident happened with one of my close friend, but was much worse. After having a heavy breakfast he went for swimming in the pool and got drowned. In his case too, water plus food got into lungs and he was comatised for 32 days, until all water and food particulars were melted and pulled out from the lungs with the help of ventilator.
As far as the internal organs are working fine, Shruthi shall come back to sense and life very soon. But need to keep a close eye on her condition and that the ventilator should be closely monitored. No force in absorbing the water should be made, as the ventilator will take its own time to pump the water out in form of vapours. After coming back to sense, she shall take around 2 months time minimum to regain her voice back, as the oxygen flow will freeze the voice box and that we shall not be able to hear her voice. But do not panic and get tensed, be supportive, calm and confident. Drink lot of warm water and avoid cold liquid consumption, so that the voice box does not get damage.
May god bless her with long life and may god bring her back to life soon.

Good idea, but If you formulate a new rule during emergency, countries like US will not allow entry on emergency basis..
