Bengaluru: Insulted by Kerala minister, Sringeri Swamiji leaves programme in a huff

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jun 14: It has been a prace to offer a sufficiently wide seat for Swamijis in programmes as they normally sit in Padmasana posture. However, the muzrai minister of Kerala, who objected to this arrangement, got the seat on which Sringeri Swamiji was to be seated, removed. Feeling insulted, the Swamiji, who was invited to the event, did not take part in the programme held on Monday June 12, reports said.

Sri Vidhushekhara Bharathi Swamiji is on a tour, and he had been specially invited to attend a programme organized on the occasion of dedicating to the world the newly developed temple pond of Lord Mahavishnu temple at Mitranandapuram near Thiruvananthapuram. Kerala Devaswom minister, Kadanapalli Surendran, and Congress legislator, Shivakumar, got the special seat meant for the Swamiji removed from the dais, it is learnt. Sources said that disturbed by this development, the Swamiji left the programme without delivering the address.

State BJP president, Yeddyurappa, and BJP general secretary, Shobha Karandlaje, have condemned the behaviour of the politicians in this incident and demanded apology from them. Yeddyurappa felt that the minister had the option of not inviting the Swamiji to the programme if he was unable to meet his requirements. Shobha Karandlaje sought unconditional apology for this incident from Kerala chief minister.

Devaswom minister, Surendran, justified his action. He said that he got the seat shifted along with MLA, Shivakumar, as the seat was occupying too much space, and that the policy of his government was to treat everyone equally.

Surendran’s act has been praised by many on social media including Congress MLA VT Balram. Balram said such acts abhorring displays of grandeur and opulence especially accorded to religious heads are welcome, reported The Indian Express.

Unlike other religions, hinduism has a profound history and a good lifestyle is the basis of hindu ideals. A guru is always revered and above all, a sanyasi has a lot of restrictions and giving up worldly pleasures has its set of demands. If the same theory of the minister, namely "EQUALITY" has to be used here, it simply won't stand a chance to be considered valid. Just as a person becomes VERY IMPORTANT by the work he/she does, or because of the virtues one poses, Jadadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Mahasannidhanam by virtue of his great mind, knowledge and wisdom holds the position he does. Although I argue that he deserves every bit of deferens he gets, to those who beg to differ, I say that the knowledge, wisdom and his preachings are to be given utmost respect, if not the person. I'd also like to add that India, being a secular country, gives a lot of consideration and respect to other religions too, rather too much to the minority religions. The very idea of disrespect to a great soul from an insignificant mind of the minister is really outrageous.

All political persons should stay away from religious ceremonies in their official capacity. In personal capacity they can do whatever they want. Government should also withdraw from managing religious places and leave it to local people committees. Why we need Devaswom or mujarai minister?

It was a religious function and Swamy is a religious head of of some mutt. When he was called for the function it was common to give respect to as per the sentiment of Hindu religion. The question is asked by my Hindu friends is will the same behaviour metted on non Hindu heads will be tolerated in the name of secularism ? We are asking this question to our politicians and especially to dongi party .

Men of God should have no ego. They represent God and they need to be like God desiring nothing. One should appreciate the stand of the Kerala Government. Why should men in saffron have a bigger chair? In fact it is the Swamiji who should apologize than the CM for walking out for treating him equal. We need the values of equality than religious superstitions. Holy men are simple and they demand no special respect. They see God everywhere and respect others

Swamiji… with due respects to you…. you should have seated in the dais on the floor instead of their offered chair so that you don’t disappoint the people who gathered to see you or seeking blessing from you…. Just ignore or forget about the respects being given to you…. Because it shows the real mentality of the people who give respects to you too
