Bantwal, May 20: Some government schools in Bantwal taluk received notices on Thursday May 18 ordering them to stop teaching students through English medium.

Surprisingly, the notice came on the same day that primary and secondary education minister Tanveer Sait’s statement appeared in newspapers which said government schools will start teaching in English in order to curb school dropouts.

The minister had identified 3,770 higher primary schools for this purpose starting from this academic year. The government also has plans to open many cluster schools in the state to give government schools a corporate touch.

The notice which has come from the office of Bantwal education officer states, "In the education progress review meetings held under the leadership of the president of Kannada Abhivruddi Pradheekara on April 22 and May 12, it was decided to teach only through Kannada medium in government Kannada medium schools. But it has come to our notice that some schools are teaching in English medium from 1 to 5th standard.

"We order you to stop teaching in English and start teaching in Kannada with immediate effect. You are urged to send a report on this immediately."

Nearly 23 schools in the taluk have received this notice, it is gathered.

Parents, students as well as teachers are in a state of confusion after learning about the notice.
