Deacons have an important role to play in every Catholic Diocese all over the world, particularly in India where in a secular country the Catholics are just a hand-full. People of all denominations have a need of a official clergy but with limited amount of priests, the growing spiritual needs of the people can hardly be met. In India, even the Nuns are playing an important role in not only Churches but also in many Hospitals, Senior Citizen Homes as well as Assisted Living places.

More and more Deacons therefore need be encouraged to come forward. Many Deacons have to be vetted, as usual, but once they are selected, they need be encouraged to take more active part in the Churches, Orphanages, Chapels and also in many rural areas where a Priest is non-existent.

House Blessings, Visiting sick people and anointing, Funeral Services and even many Weddings, Engagements and several other community services, a trained dedicated Deacon can and should be allowed to perform a job and assist the local Parish Priest. The presence of a Deacon in the Church, specially on Sundays and several other religious occasions can be equally helpful. The Deacon also needs to be suitably rewarded because some of the individuals may have to depend on the Parish support for their living. Accordingly, a retired Deacon in his old age also requires proper assistance and the Diocese should be able to look into those provisions that can obviously serve as an incentive for any individual who dedicates his services to the people thru his respective designated Parishes.

This is our personal opinion. The service rendered by a Certified Deacon could be a good benefit to the Parish as well as to the Parishonors. It is therefore our prefer that India should be blessed with more and more Deacons so as to serve the spiritual needs of the people.
