Mangaluru: Fr Dr Praveen Martis appointed new principal of St Aloysius College

Mangaluru, Apr 17: Fr Dr Praveen Martis has been appointed new principal of St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangaluru.

Fr Dr Praveen Martis assumed the office of the principal on Monday April 17. The incumbent principal Fr Swebert D'Silva who has attained superannuation, handed over the office to the new principal in a programme arranged in the college in the presence of Fr Dionysius Vas, the rector of St Aloysius Institutions.

Fr Dr Praveen Martis hails from Shankerpura, Udupi district. After finishing his early education from St John’s Educational Institutions, Shankerpura and Pre-University from St Mary’s College, Shirva, he graduated from St Aloysius College, Mangaluru and completed post-graduate degree in chemistry from St Joseph’s College, Bengaluru. He did his doctoral studies in the department of chemistry and electrochemistry of surfaces, University of Namur, Belgium and obtained his PhD degree for his thesis on 'Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes: Decorated with metal nanocrystals and incorporated into metal matrices' in 2011.

A well-known research scholar in chemistry, he has several research paper presentations and publications to his credit. He has more than 15 international publications in peer reviewed reputed journals.

Fr Dr Praveen has rich experience in teaching and administration. During his religious studies he was entrusted with the responsibility of assistant director of Loyola Pre-novitiate, Mangaluru. After his ordination in 2005, He was appointed correspondent and student counsellor at St Joseph’s Evening College, Bengaluru. He began teaching career in the year 2007 at St Joseph’s Institutions, Bengaluru as lecturer in chemistry. During the same period he also held the offices of assistant director of Ashirvad, Bengaluru.

Known for his leadership qualities and intellectual expertise he has been shouldering various administrative posts in the Karnataka Jesuit province. To name a few, in 2011 he was promoted to the post of director of Post Graduate and Research Centre in St Joseph’s College, Bengaluru. He also served as the rector of St Joseph’s College, Bengaluru from 2012 – 2014. In 2013 in addition to this responsibility he was appointed as the principal of St Joseph’s College(Autonomous), Bengaluru. In 2015 he was transferred to St Aloysius College(Autonomous) Mangaluru as vice-principal, campus minister and director of DDU Kaushal Kendra. He is instrumental in initiating the skill based BVoc degree programmes. He also serves as the consultant to the provincial of Karnataka Province and secretary of Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society.
