Udupi, Apr 13: Dr Deviprasad Shetty, vice president of Karnataka State Panchayat Union, has demanded a thorough inquiry into the transparency of Suzlon project near Padubidri. He wanted this investigation to be held with the participation of the deputy commissioner of this district by deputy labour commissioner of Hassan in the presence of media persons. He alleged that Suzlon has been making use of basic plastic substance that is poisonous, for manufacturing of blades. Because of this, entry of general public has been banned there, and the labourers have to work with face masks to protect themselves from this poison, he stated.

"People are not freely allowed inside Suzlon like in Udupi Power Corporation Ltd plant. It projects itself as environmentally sustainable industry. If their claim is true, what are the defects that the industry wants to hide, which have compelled it to even not allow the local police entry inside the project area?" he wanted to know. He asked the district administration to make public the things which the company wants to avoid from becoming public knowledge.

Recent protest at Suzlon

Dr Shetty noted that the labourers working for Suzlon have no life and job security and that they are being treated like bonded labour. "The industry has failed to follow even the safety precautions to be followed in case of emergencies like fire tragedies to ensure safety of its working class. The officials of the concern are not prepared to give information about how the poisonous plastic waste arising out of the blade manufacture is being disposed off. This issue needs to be subjected to investigation through officials of environment department," he insisted.

He further stated that Suzlon also faces allegation of land grabbing in the name of special economic zone, adding that the company has also been lagging behind in the matter of use of corporate social responsibility fund. He said that the condition of roads lying close to the project area is pitiable and Suzlon has failed to extend help for infrastructure development.

I am an ex-employee of Suzlon Udupi and in comparison to other FRP Industries Suzlon Udupi is having higher standard of safety. Wearing face masks is mandatory in fact it is used in every industry and even by traffic police. If you are dead against face mask then we need to close all factories including thermal power plant, cement industries. Suzlon has worked out a better solution of using waste as co-generator and fillers for cement industries.

To conclude if you wish to protest please do it against the thermal power plant in Udupi. Because when we tested air quality we checked out side our facility has more Nox and SO2 content.

In Suzlan Case many things need to be checked it out by competent authority of State/central Government.
    1. We should consider about what type of chemical/plastic being used at said Plant? If it is harmful either to personnel nor environment? Are they have any planned program for Disposing the hazardous chemicals or plastic to the nominated areas mentioned in the regulations ?
    2. Regard to the people concerned safety, Authorities need to go through the SDS of the materials which being used at plant, In SDS its clearly states that which kind of PPE's to be used. Reconfirm Whether dust mask is only enough for executing the said task or additional special PPE /training required for it.
    3. If its a hazardous, then company shall monitor the health condition of the employees and necessary documentation should maintain.
    4. Integrity of the commitments concerned we should recall the existing welfare facilities provided to the employees by the company to upkeep the living/health standard of employees and society .

This whole episode gives rise to a doubt of extortion! This type of Parisaravadi's have done more harm than good! Why any company should give free access to general public?
I worked in a plastic raw material manufacturing company in Baroda several decades back. We used raw material Acrylonitrile (Vinyl Cyanide) for manufacturing ABS and SAN plastics, squirrels died once a blue moon when they got into multiple story structure in some rare area!
I'm sure the manufacturer knows how to manufacture his goods! Even our traditional kitchen may create suffocation if smoke is not provided with proper vent!!
These protesters are driving away job opportunities and revenue to the region! Guess we do have educated environmentalists, inspectors and concerned authorities on government / SEZ payroll to see things right!

Earlier a Gujarat based co had developed fibre blades for it's wind mills, but after some serious quality issues supply was stopped n perhaps they started in-house mfg of blades. The supplier co has gone fut on the stock exchanges!

Also lacs of investors who invested in shares at the peak in this wind mill co have lost most of their investment capital because of worsening financial performance over the years!!

These labour leaders have no technical knowledge. But the labour force and employees go after them lie bakras. All plastic materials are poisonous if consumed by human beings But they are not to be consumed. You dont eat plastic buckets, bottles, mixer grinder parts, etc.envelopes etc They how can you criticise the product of Suzlon who make the same item world wide? Wind mills are nature friendly sources of energy. dont blame them for your personal benefit. Everyone knows what the labour leaders want out of these issues.
Employees and labourers should join together and boycott such leaders.
