Bengaluru: State govt drops controversial steel flyover project

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Mar 2: The ambitious steel flyover project, which ran into controversry after allegations against chief minister Siddaramaiah of receiving kickbacks, has been dropped.

Bowing to pressure from citizens and green activists, the Karnataka government on Thursday February 2 abandoned the controversial steel flyover project in the city, saving about 800 trees from facing the axe.

"The steel flyover will not be constructed as the project has been cancelled," Bengaluru Development Minister K J George told reporters here.

The Chennai bench of the National Green Tribunal on October 28, 2016 stayed the 6.9-km project from Chalukya Circle in the city centre to Hebbal junction in the northern suburb, connecting the international airport road at Devanahalli and National Highway 4 towards Hyderabad.

The state-run Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) was the nodal agency for the Rs 1,761-crore project and engineering and construction major L&T was to execute it, as its lowest bidder in a global tender.

The expensive six-lane project, ostensibly meant to ease the gridlock on the busy thoroughfare, faced vehement opposition from civic society and urban experts as it would have resulted in the loss of about 800 trees and their green canopy en-route to the city's outskirts.

State's former Additional Chief Secretary V Balasubramanian and Citizens Action Forum President N S Mukunda jointly filed the writ petition before the Tribunal against the BDA from executing the project as it would have caused environmental damage to the garden city.

The Tribunal bench, headed by Justice M Chokalingam and expert member P S Rao, passed an interim order, restraining the state government from going ahead with the project till the petitioners' concerns were heard and addressed.

"Neither the state government nor BDA considered alternative routes, no study was done to confirm if the steel bridge was the best option, no permission was taken to cut 800 trees and no public hearings were conducted before awarding the project to a private firm," claimed the petitioners then.

The opposition BJP led by its state president B S Yeddyurappa had alleged that Siddarmaiah had received Rs 65 crore as kickbacks. The allegations had made headlines nationwide. Moreover, a diary seized by the I-T department, said to be belonging to MLC Govindaju reportedly reveals information about the 'kickbacks'.

The flyover shoud have been constructed for the smooth flow of traffic.. vehicles waiting for hours in firts and second gear in the traffic do more harm to the environment than cutting of few trees. Again cutting of trees can be compensated by planting 100 trees for every tree that is cut at some other place.. but now u cannot avoid the pollution caused by thousands of vehicles queing up in traffic..
The Government doesn't have the brains needed for the job..

In India, is there any person so stupid as Chaddis?
Just read below comments from Shibu
    "Shibu, Dubai

got their share of 65 crore, now dropped."
Any company in the world will give 65 crore kickback to anybody without rewarding 25 fold bigger contract???? By dropping the project one can understand that Yeddy was barking for no reason together he thinks if he become CM, he can hijack this project which will give him pride & price, exactly how Feku hijacked MMS projects and renamed it.
These Chaddis are really so DISGUSTING!!!!

If people don't need service of steel bridge then what is the point in continuing it?On the other hand BSY every day remembering 65Crore kick back in that project which is certainly embarrassing Siddu govt!!Let BSY eat his words.....BJP now importing (wholesale) commodities from political market to make candidates in next ASSEMBLY general election!!!Siddu made wise decision in scraping controversial Steel bridge project which was once initiated by BJP!!!!!!

I fail to understand why we do not have logical and sensible think tanks in the government. Politicians and Beauracrats are just creating projects to make money. Bangalore has been destroyed and the destruction is getting worse by the day. No common sense planning.
