2 dead, many injured in jallikattu at Pudukottai; 1 dead in Madurai protests

Updated

Madurai, Jan 22 (PTI): Two persons were killed and 28 suffered minor injuries during jallikattu in Pudukottai district today, while a man died due to dehydration in Madurai during protests demanding a 'permanent solution' for holding the sport, police said.

The people injured during the incident in Pudukottai district, where scores of people and several bulls took part, were discharged after providing first-aid, they said.

With an ordinance being promulgated for holding jallikattu, the sport was organised in several parts of the state, including Rapoosal in Pudukottai district.

Police said two persons were killed when they were gored by a bull during jallikattu at Rapoosal in which several bulls were used and many sportsmen took part.

Meanwhile, 48-year-old Chandramohan, from Jaihindpuram, died due to dehydration in Madurai city when he was taking part in the protests along with students and youths demanding a permanent solution for holding jallikattu, police said.

At Tirunelveli, some students, including girls, fainted at a protest venue following which they were given medical treatment, police said.

Protests force CM to leave without inaugurating jallikattu

Jallikattu was conducted in various parts of Tamil Nadu today even as protests continued at Alanganallur in Madurai where people refused to hold the famous sport seeking a "permanent solution", forcing chief Minister O Panneerselvam to leave for Chennai without inaugurating it.

Panneerselvam had yesterday said he would inaugurate the bull taming sport at Alanganallur, famous for holding jallikattu events, at 10 AM.

Groups of protesters continued to stay put at several locations in the state, including the Marina Beach at Chennai, epicentre of the stir for the last six days. The protesters are seeking a permanent solution for holding the sport, besides a ban on animal rights group PETA.

As protesters demanded a permanent solution for holding the sport and raised slogans that ordinance was only a temporary measure, Panneerselvam said: the "State's jallikattu ordinance route is permanent, robust and sustainable, will be made into a law in the coming Assembly session."

He reiterated that there was no ban following the promulgation of the ordinance.

The Chief Minister said the ordinance will be replaced by a law after bringing in a bill in the Assembly session, beginning at Chennai tomorrow.

Speaking to reporters at Madurai before leaving for Chennai, Panneerselvam said,"The ban on jallikattu has been removed completely, the sport will be held at Alanganallur, on a date decided by local people."

He said jallikattu was held in all parts of Tamil Nadu with the local adminstration and police taking all stipulated measures to hold the sport.

Continuing blockades and agitations here at Alanganallur and Tamukkam grounds, besides neighbouring Natham Kovilpatti in Dindigul, put a question mark over Panneerselvam inaugurating jallikattu.

Panneerselvam, who had announced that he would inaugurate jallikattu at Alanganallur, had to stay back in a hotel here following the stir there by protesters who demanded a permanent measure to be in place.

Following that, Panneerselvam was expected to inaugurate jallikattu at Natham Kovilpatti in Dindigul. However, protests erupted there too placing the same demand for a "permanent solution."
At Alanganallur, protesters declined to hold the sport by blocking the entry and exit points of the sprawling sporting arena.

A group of organisers had removed the bulls from the arena as well.

Tension prevailed in Manojipatti village near Thanjavur when villagers refused to conduct jallikattu. They placed barricades en route to the venue where Agriculture Minister Duraikannu is expected to inaugurate it.

At Pudukottai, jallikattu was inaugurated by Health Minister C Vijayabhaskar.

In Thanjavur, nearly 500 youths reportedly picketed a passenger train from Mayiladuthurai to Tirunelvelli at Kumbakonam as part of the protest.

Kangeyam cattle research centre president Karthikeya Senathipathy in a Facebook post appealed to the youths to end the stir as an ordinance has been promulgated for holding the bull taming sport.

The inauguration of the 'Rekla Race' (Ox cart race), popular in Western parts of Tamil Nadu, at Coimbatore witnessed protests from students demanding a permanent solution for holding of jallikattu.

Even as the race was flagged-off by state Local Administration Minister S P Velumani, a large number of students arrived at Codisia Grounds, venue of Rekla race, and staged a sit-in on the premises.

Speaking to reporters, Velumani said some "vested interests" were trying to create confusion among the students about the ordinance.

The students said they will "allow the race" to be held only after, what they called a "permanent solution", was in sight.

Jallikattu was banned following a Supreme Court order in May 2014.

One of the major setback for 'gau rakshaks' which was indirectly supported by the Sangh parivar. The aspiration of BJP to make backdoor entry using 'Jallikattu' tradition with the fallout of powerful 'Amma' has been kicked out by unity of Dravidian political parties.

In the past Maharashtra enacted beef ban law with 5 years jail, Rs 10,000 fine for possession or sale. While petitioners had claimed that the ban violated their fundamental right to life and eat food of their choice, the state had argued that there was no fundamental right to eat beef and it had enacted the law to protect cow and its progeny. However, objected and said, "How can the state say slaughter of cattle in Maharashtra amounts to cruelty but one can slaughter outside the state? That would also amount to cruelty. The Act incidentally prohibits import also."

Now in hush-hush ordinance has passed by the PM Modi's central government to allow 'Jallikattu' bull taming with certain degree of cruelty to the animal.

Is BJP which short of majority Rajya Sabha votes and relied on AIADMK support made to rethink the amendment in the law or Tamilian anger?

If cruelty of animal is allowed for sport saying age old tradition, in an malnutionishned nation many people's dietary protein was banned saying cruelty to animal is highly questionable?

It seems government is cherry picking the law to make on section to satisfy to make political debut, in other hand imposing ban violating fundamental rights to consume food of his/her own choice.

Govt cant organize jallikatu as it was banned.Govt is bringing an ordinance(valid for 6 months and its not permanent solution) after the protest that is going on.That s the real reason for boycot in madurai and all over the places and needs permanent solution.
This is not a state problem and the protest is for whole nation and for our future generation.People should understand the Geo politics behind this.

From 130 native cattle breeds, we now have only 30. Here are some facts. MNCs are trying to eliminate native breeds to introduce artificial insemination. PETA is lobbying for the MNCs.
In recent years, the incidence of diseases like diabetes has increased in India. One of the main reasons of this is the consumption of a1-category milk, which comes from Jersey and cross-breed cows. Native Indian breeds cows give a2 milk. Native breed cows milch one or two litres less than cross breeds, but are healthy. But if PETA and other animal welfare organisations lobby to ban Jallikattu and other bull-related sports and traditions, farmers will not have any incentive to rear native cattle.
This, in turn, will pave the way for MNCs to introduce foreign and cross-breeds. One cannot imagine the magnitude of this business.

Jalli katu is completely different from spain bull fight. Jallikattu has been practised for thousands of years - unlike in Spain, the bull is not killed and the object is to hold the hump of bull from 15 feet
Its not jallikatu, real name of the sport is eru thazhuvuthal. Eru-bull, thazhuvuthal -Embrace
There are several rules to Jallikattu
Pre/Post test for the bulls by govt medical experts.
The bull will be released on the the arena through the vadi vasal, an entry gate.
The contestant should only hold the bull by its hump. Holding by the neck, horns or tail results in disqualification.
The tamer should embrace the bull for 30 seconds or 15 feet, whichever is longer when the bull runs.(Usually it is about 15 m (49 ft), marked by hanging overhead marker flags along the line.)
If the bull throws the contestant off before the line or if no-one manages to hold on to the bull, then the bull will be declared victorious.
If the contestant manages to hold on to the hump till it crosses the finish line, then the contestant is declared the winner.
Only one contestant should hold on to the bull at one time. If more than one contestant holds on to the bull, then there is no winner.
No contestant should hit or hurt the bull in any manner.

Jallikattu is what's keeping our native breed of cows from going extinct which is a huge problem for western cattle industry. They want to make money by selling us western cattle, bull semen, medicine, etc and our bulls are in their way

Tamilians fight for continuation of Jallikattu as if its a pilgrimage.

There is a belief that dying during a pilgrimage is a blessing. Do the dead in this game consider the same ? Or their kin ?

Indian Jallikattu is same like Spanish-style bullfighting is called a corrida de toros (literally a "running of bulls"), tauromaquia or fiesta and is practiced in Spain, where it originates, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, as well as in parts of Southern France and Portugal.

Though it gives pleasure and happiness for the audience, some people die for nothing....
