Bengaluru: Boy's refusal to convert to Christianity reason for acid attack?

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Updated

Bengaluru, Jan 18: As more details emerge in the case relating to the acide attack launched by a girl on her boyfriend for not marrying her, it is now learnt that the girl had coaxed him to convert to Christianity, which he refused.

Police sources said that the accused, Lydia (26), had met the victim, Jayakumar, in his shop years ago. Their friendship turned into a love affair and they started meeting regularly.

Lydia reportedly coaxed Jayakumar to convert and then marry her. While he agreed to the marriage last November, he refused to become a Christian, which led to quarrels, sources said.

Harassed by her constant nagging, Jayakumar started to ignore her calls, after which Lydia decided to 'teach him a lesson'. Police sources said that about a week ago, with the help of her cousin Sunil, Lydia, a nurse by profession, took away a bottle of acid used for cleaning and a blade from the hospital she worked at.

Lydia learnt from Jayakumar's family members that he and his friend Padmanabh would be going to Rajarajeshwari temple on Monday evening, and seizing the opportunity, Sunil and Lydia lay in wait near Attiguppe bus stop. At around 8.30 pm when Jayakumar and his friend were passing by the bus stop on their way home, the accused started following them in scooter. When they reached near Pipelane Road, Lydia who was sitting pillion threw acid on Jayakumar through his car window, police sources said.

As Jayakumar got out of the car in pain, Lydia confronted him and slashed his face with the blade, before escaping from the spot, it is learnt. Jayakumar's friend rushed him to hospital and informed the police.

While Lydia was arrested, her cousin Sunil has been absconding.

Sources said that in her statement to the police, Lydia admitted that she had asked Jayakumar to convert to Christianity and marry her.

Dont be confuse, both are wrong...
Girl will get punishment -Section 326 A in the Indian Penal Code lays down the punishment for acid throwing. The minimum punishment is 10 years imprisonment.
Boy will get punishment- sections 417. cheating.+ sections 376/ 511 rape or rape attempted+295A. Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings or any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.+ women given that acid punishment.

It is very confusing for me.. In a recent incident of Shruthi, some people tried to defend her by commenting her husband was wrong. Agreed.

Here in this case some people are defending this cruel girl by saying he would have promised her of marriage and all that...

There he killed his wifes boyfriend bcoz of love, here she tried to kill him bcoz of love(Lets say not for religion).. Crime is same. Total confusionappa..

All this lead me to understand we have some criminals here who support crimes by supporting criminals..

Lydia, what you did to this animal you did a right thing... all this years he was cheating you today when you taught him a lesson he is cooking a story against you. Jayakumar, if she asked you to convert to Christianity why you did not leave her earlier, why after 8 years you dumped her, why? Jayakumar most of the cheaters like you have some story to dump a girl who really love with whole hearted. I don't think you are innocent you just had lust in your mind.

Since the crime has been done by a christian, the comments are" she shouldnt have done it, arrest her etc"
If the same crime had been done by a hindu, it would been " Oh RSS is behind this, Bajrang Dal is behind this".

    Swami,

What else do you want ? Christians constitute groups similar to RSS/BD/SRS/HJV ? I don't think your dream will be fulfilled because the community has displayed very peaceful reactions in all past incidents.

If RSS and other organisations are called, its fittingly correct because those members otherwise do nothing. They wait to find a girl from their community even talking to a man from other communities and begin their social service. This activating does not take place if a man from their community going about for 8 years with the girl of other community ! Hypocrites !

Sure the boy was going out with the girl for 8 years of relationship only the girl is at mistake ignoring some one suddenly after 8 years of relationship it easy for the boy. The boy got out easy by just ignoring her what was he doing for the past 8 years of relationship i can imagine how many times the topic of religion change might have come up he would have cleared it in the beginning it self . He would not have been in this situation. He also gave a false hope to the girl. They both are responsible for each others misery they bout should be punished.

If the acid attack reasons are true as reported, surely this girl deserves to be punished.
If she is so particular, why did she compromised earlier and went ahead in relation?
Leave aside, what majority practice is contradictory! but scripturally, one is
not supposed to be physically before wedlock in Christianity!
True Love, Good Morals, ethics and legally being correct is more important for successful married life.
May be he has promised her in the beginning but deferring the commitment later.
Here most of the things are compromised. Set the stage right before dancing.

if it was a true love .., either one would have sacrificed their stand for the sake to maintain sanctity of love..., now the girl may file a case under relevant sections of law obviously in consultation with the lawyer of repute ...., which may prompt a non-bailable warrant against the innocent boy (though i am reluctant to attribute innocence).

    Albert ,

To who is your notion ? The lady in the news, or me ? God is one alright, then why are you going to Church to worship Him - not to a temple or a mosque ?

Look, gentleman, Jesus Christ (or the Church) deviated Christianity from Jewish belief but thereon, hundreds of deviations have emerged. Can you tell me which one is the right one ?

Therefore, believe what your parents taught you, what your religious heads taught you and be content with it. Let others practice their faith because to them their parents taught the same as your parents did.

As for (God) questioning me to define whether I am a lady or a monster, leave that to me to reply - you peep into yourself to judge yourself and ready your answer.

    Lydia,

''Therefore, believe what your parents taught you, what your religious heads taught you and be content with it. Let others practice their faith because to them their parents taught the same as your parents did.''

Just look around in inter-religious marriages (what you call as sajjige bajil unions) most cases you will see that a previously Hindu as converted to religion of the spouse. I dont think by adopting a policy of being content, it would be possible.

I somewhat agree with your stand against sajjige bajil unions. The way people think, act, their likes and dislikes can be very different from one community to the other. Some things can be adjusted but some cannot. Further many of us would prefer that our very own ways of how we live and think to be carried down the generations.

Deep inside would I be against Inter-religious marriages? Yeah I would. But if asked about my opinion about it I would say that individual`s rights trumps everything. Individuals right to determine their own future and take the steps to achieve it.

By marrying into same community, we take on the family legacy. Yes, its individuals' choice, to decide what they want out of the marriage they are commit to - anybody, including the parents, are outsiders in this decision. But, to retain the harmony and cordial relationship between India's multi-religious social fabric, do stick to your own community, do not opt the opposite.

At the same time, if a couple have decided to marry outside the community, I will vote for the man to retain his affiliation and the girl converts. This is because as per Indian customs, the child gets father's family name, not mothers. Obviously the ultimate sufferers are their children - its what they have inherited from their parents, can't help !

    Lydia madam/Kadri,
If you take up the responsibility of gruesome act of acid throwing just to convert another soul into Christianity, then my notion directly refers to you! As we all know you are not!! Hope you also protest the evil act!!
God is not restricted to church only.. He is omnipresent, in temples, mosques, bus stand, park, beach etc. Krishna, Buddha, Jesus, Allah.. all showed us the way to lead peaceful life with great consideration to 'karma'. When you can deal with 'right path' you need not visit religious place and seek a priest's preaching. We all know what all they have done behind the screen!!
Yes. I firmly believe GOD will question a monster, who thew acid on a person who refused to change his religion!! Whether it is some other Lydia or you or you are supporting the monster act is immaterial here!!! We must protest the act and lady in question should be punished severely.

I really pity certain individuals ignorance here. They are more worried about once name and religion, ignoring 'evil act' of throwing acid on poor man's face, which might count for support based on their religious faith!!
Karma is nothing to do with re-birth but the law of moral cause and effect. Karma accumulates from every thought or action that engages the participation of one's awareness and intellect. As you so sow , so shall you reap - Origin of the proverb is traced to the Bible, Galations VI (King James Version): Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

I think the understanding that our actions are responsible for the consequences , is an universal understanding. It's just got different names in Hinduism , Islam or Christianity.

Surprisingly, full story has not been published above. Please read Times of India or in Udayavani for the full details. As per that, the girl was adamant that he should get converted to Christianity before the marriage, otherwise her parents would not approve . This was not acceptable to him. He and his parents had agreed for the marriage but not conversion to her religion.

In some relationships it is mutual give and take...'cos both parties enjoy and have a good time and it ends well with both of them. But, may be in this relatonship the girl was serious and when the guy refused to marry she felt ditched and took this step !

It’s like the ‘Grapes are sour. (after 8 years)
Why she took eight years to understand a lover. If he took advantage of her continuing physical relation on the pretext of Love, it is partly her weaknesses to offer all the liberty to a false love/lover. She took revenge in a criminal and uncivilized manner. Such action may lead to counter action by the boy in the future. She should be dealt with rule of the law for her criminal act and no leniency on gender basis.

He gave her heart attack and she attacked him with acid and blade. What other weapons could she use for a person who ditched her after flirting for 8 years. TONGUE ? Oh no. Eight years were not sufficient for a man to know the girl he moved with. When moving around men forget every thing. When the question of marriage comes, men become selfish and they remember their parents and so many other things forgetting girls pains and her future. This was the most deserving punishment from a broken heart.

Lidiya's idea of attacking Jayakumar might have been inspired by many other acid attacks in past.

This will motivate many ladies fighting for equality in negative way & NGO's might have to open a cell for acid attack men victims !

O Lydia, why you did this crime?attaching with acid and harm a person? you should have thought first before doing this how a person can suffer ,place yourself in his position.second you didnt achieve with htis anything.but a case. you cant force one to marry when he dont want. You had long 8years to learn and make sure if he wants marry you or not.where are your and his parents? Now you did this crime, see that you have to get with police to do.,Have to pay him compansation ,hospital charges, ask him pardon.

    Shalet,

Hence forth donot blame the boy when there are such kind of acid attacks. Your words and this act clearly shows that even girls can do such kind of crimes and then are equally responsible for the growth of crime in the society.

Indians are known for broadmindedness and forgiving nature since antiquity. We teach our children to preserve/nurture someone/something which is liked/loved by us! These types of destructive strategies surfacing in recent times may not be an example of love, but is only of lust/cruelty. If one really and deeply loves another person, he/she cannot think of executing the destruction of other one.

Your last sentence seems true to me, since I have come across a girl who wrote to the boy when he refused to marry her "Brother, I know you are a good man, but, due to problems , your parents have turned you back on me. I will never pray for your bad luck. I wish you all the best in life". You know what happened, that boy married that girl even with objection from home.
