Doha: Music, football to blend at World Goa Day celebrations

Doha, Nov 4: For the first time in Qatar, Ponda-born versatile singer Sonia Shirsat will perform at the World Goa Day in Qatar organized by Goan Welfare Association. Football and music run in Goan blood, hence both these activities will mark the celebration of World Goa Day 2013.

Sonia, a law professor is known as the ambassador of Goan music to the world. She will perform on November 8 at Al Arabi Football Stadium at 3.30 pm. Gates will open at 2.30 pm. Sonia has made a mark in the music scene in Goa and now she has reached the international stage.

Rated as the best Fadista (fado singer) of all time in India, Sonia has been singing professionally for the last 10 years, and has performed in Goa, Daman, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Luxembourg, Macau, Kuwait, France, Singapore, Hawaii, Nepal, Canada, London, Dubai, Muscat, Lisbon, and Qatar will be added shortly.

She is the recipient of “Yuva Shrujan Award”, the highest award conferred by the State of Goa in the Youth category. This award was conferred upon her for her contribution in taking Goa music and Goa to international level. Sonia has lent her voice to various Konkani albums released by Manfa Music, Manzil Studios, Dy SP Samy Tavares and has done an album on patriotic Konkani songs with Tomazinho Cardozo. She has performed many a time along with the 'Nightingale of Goa' Lorna on various occasions.

She was a semi-finalist on Zee Tv's 'Sa Re Ga Ma' in the Band special in 2000. Her first solo concert, Mundo Fado, was organized in Lisbon, Portugal (2008). This concert included fados and traditional songs from Goa (Mando) and India with fado instruments.

Sonia worked once more with Antonio Chainho in his recent album ‘LISGOA’, which was released in March 2010 all over Europe. In this album, she sings the Mando ‘Adeus korcho vellu’, and ‘Rajan Prema’, duet with Remo Fernandes.

She released her debut album ‘Saudades de Fado’ in 2010. This album was recorded in Lisbon, and released by Rock and Raaga, in Goa.

On November 8 at Al Arabi Football stadium, Sonia will cater to different nationalities of over 15,000 spectators and Goans/Konkani speaking community in particular. Agnelo Rodrigues and Lance D’Souza will provide the music. There will be cash prizes worth Qrs 3,000 only for the community. Soon after her performance, Al Ahli and Al Rayyan will play their match for Qatar Stars League at 4 pm sharp.

Come in big numbers and witness the exhilarating celebration. Sonia’s VCDs will be on sale at the Al Arabi Stadium.
