Manipal gang-rape makes students more cautious, auto drivers face loss

Sheeja Moodubelle
Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Jun 29: Following the Manipal gang rape, the mindset of the students with regard to safety has changed tremendously and they now prefer to travel in a group of known people rather than risk travelling alone in an auto rickshaw.

Suneedhi, a KMC student speaking to Daijiworld, said that this particular incident has shocked her and her friends and now all the students prefer go out in groups.

"We never expected such incidents to occur in Manipal because it is a very secure place. If we can’t get security here, where else do we go?" she asks.

Another student criticized the government and said that the authorities should come up with strict regulations to punish the culprits without any mercy.

A nursing student said that the security systems are good, but ever since this tragedy has occurred the risk has increased, especially for girls.

"We are praying for the victim as she is one of us. Auto drivers are protesting here, we don’t understand why; they do not have the right to do so because one among them has committed this brutal assault,” she said.

Sources said that after this incident, many female students have been questioned for various reasons and no one is aware of the purpose. But they in turn prevent the media from questioning.

"No local people must be allowed on the campus. A campus card is a must to enter the library for students, but most of them don’t use it. Security should be tightened by the management and police. Cameras should not only be placed inside the campus but outside too to bring in better security," said some students.

"The auto drivers’ versions seems acutely wrong as they said no driver from Manipal stand would do anything like this. The auto drivers claim that they help girls in need, but this incident has proved otherwise," said one student.

On the other hand, the auto drivers too are indignant. They are incurring losses as they do not get enough of trip fares especially during their night shifts.

"Just because of some horrible men who have committed this crime, we are also being questioned. Blaming the innocent is not right. We are all committed to our jobs. We cooperated fully with the police although they kept innocent people in jail for one night," retorted the auto drivers.

Some drivers said, "We don’t get many trips now but we can't says whether this is because the colleges hostels of MIT, MIC and others are shut down for holidays or because of the incident.”

"Another fact which kills students is their addiction to drugs.  Police keep arresting the members of the drug mafia who sell the brown sugar and ‘ganja’ but the search for the peddlers does not last long. The media and the public tend to forget these issues once the hype is over. Manipal is a center for drug supplies. Including the police force, all are aware of it but do nothing about it. To capture the mafia members is not possible because the students belong to rich families and have connections with the higher authorities. The police ignore the petty incidents which later become a big problem. From the past decade, the drug network has reached great heights and the judicial loopholes add more chaos,” they said.

One of the students also said, "We are not born with bad habits but we have our own problems and we feel drugs are the supplement to our happiness. Drugs keep us good company while we are alone."

Mr.Ashwin,I am glad that you have taken my comment heartly but it's very easy and the most preferred tactic to attack indivisually to counter highly weighted argument. This is same as opponents of legalising prostitution counter supporters by asking,"Would you allow you sister or daughter to be a prostitute?"You expressed about PRIVICY,in my opinion PRIVICY is only relevent till the matter is not of social or national welfare, once matter becomes of social or national interest PRIVICY become irrelevent.*Now my question to you"A husband and wife have a right that whom to give birth girl or boy as per their wish, they can choose to abort girl child, unborn child belong to them, who is government to interfere in their privicy. It means PNCNDT is a sheer violation of Right to Privicy. What do you think about this organised legal violation of PRIVICY. *Once agencies like CBI,NIA,ATS,IB and police department also get any suspicion over any house, they raid and traspass among females and search their boxes, safes and bags even containing undergarments.Do you think this is violation of privicy or not?*Let's imigine an innocent person is implemented as rapist, his identity is disclosed,he gets bail in six month and after two year he is acquitted,in my opinion he is SOCIALY DEAD BODY only physically alive,Do you think here any violation of privicy.

Now let them also stop taking Drugs, and not to move out of their Hostel or Flat after 9 pm.
Police say 60% of the Boys & 40% of girls in Manipal Colleges are addicted to Drugs.

The BD threatened the police and then found its own man involved in the crime. It could be plan by the BD to create a situation where they are safe for the society but not the others and ended up in their own trap. Why they did not come out on media by praising the police for solving the crime.Where are the holy leaders who teach so many good things of the Indian culture.

There is something in the world called PRIVACY. Disclosing any persons identity is not done for matters of privacy, and not to verify the intellectual capability of 121 crore indians. People will understand this argument better, if such a atrocity happens to a family member. Incase if u disagree, u can post the details of such a atrocity in your family on the public domain with all your details. Will you dare to??

I absolutely agree with Arvind. My Question:If she have done nothing wrong why does her face and indentity not disclosed.Women organisation says there is social stigma in society BUT I want to ask: Is whole indian society of 121 crore people so stupid which can not differenciate wright and wrong.Did we forget this whole society which stood unmoved behind Nirbhaya. If this ill-tradition of concealing indentity is not stopped immediately there will be same situation in 22nd centuary. In my opinion SILENCE IS ONE OF THE ROOT CAUSE OF RAPE. The identity of rape victim should be disclosed in each and every case.Atleast people know for whom they are praying and future rapists will fear silence would no more to help them.Few people argue who will marry rape victim if her rape victim status disclosed but my question is that in urban india 90% girls already enjoys premerital sex and their husbands discover them as non-virgin at wedding night, whether they abandone them:NOT, NOT AT ALL,if people can accept these girls why people will not accept rape victims?

Manipal University should introduce private Autos and Smart Cycles inside their Campus. They should have attractive colour and Bold Numbers on the Rooftop &Two-Sides, like in American Cabs for easy identification. These facilities are only for the Campus Students who holds Photo Identity Card and it will give extra confidence to the student community. Those who have monthly/Quarterly Cycle Pass Holder can Hire & Leave their Cycle at few Cycle Hire Centers around the Campus. For Security reason, only Pass Holders should be allowed to use the Campus Cycles. Further, High resolution CCTV should be installed at all small & big Exit Points, Lonely Streets and Campus Junctions. Further, for swift action the Campus Security guards should carry Walkie-Talkies and there should be Two Motorcycle borne Security Squad to ply the length and breadth of the Campus Every Half an Hour interval. This will have a double effect, firstly, the security guards will remain alert & not sleep in the night, and secondly, they can chase or directly confront the accused culprit
Few Safety Tips for College Girls:
Avoid new types of alcohol & always watch their drinks
    Never travel alone
    Take basic Self Defense class
Have protection: practice using pepper spray etc
Avoid dangerous situations: talking to strangers & using lonely streets
In dangerous situations: Inform friend Throw key/purse away & run in other direction Call Emergency No. & Yell loudly
    Child Molesters:
Rather than appearing to be monsters, they usually try to be very charming and friendly. After gaining widespread trust, over time, some eventually even head nonprofit organizations of various kinds dealing with youth, giving the molesters not only easy access but also free rein. They tend to rationalize their sexual interests and validate their behavior. They show an excessive interest in children/teens, and often seduce them with attention, affection and gifts.
    AVOID THEM!

There is no doubt that lot of drug related activities going on in and around Manipal area and protected by concerned authorities for the kind of big money involved. Rich multi-cultured students are addicted to it, also the institutions are keeping quiet just to protect their name and fame. Because of the public out cry this case got attention, otherwise would have given some other twist and swept under the carpet.

whenever any incident happens let us not blame any party or organisations. being more educated let us not target any body based on their religion or cast. not every body in all religion are perfect or ideal people. there are differences and uniqueness in each individual.
what i see the comments here are mostly to object or to support any party. just because i belong to one religion that does not mean that any thing and everything happenings we blame and try to put other religion down.let us raise a voice as human beings.

It is inappropriate to blame students or Manipal University for use of Illicit Drugs in Manipal.

The law enforcement agency should be blamed for failing to nab the Drug Peddlars

In any developed Nation, Drug users are considered as victims and end up in Rehab centres, and Drug Peddlers go to Prison

I am not taking sides but this is the right way to deal with this problem.

Added to drugs, I don't understand why there are so many bars & wine shops in the midst of Manipal? It is an education hub.I have seen young students both boys & girls coming to these bars & buying, drinking & getting fully blown with the alcohol. It's so convenient for these students to have alcohol. Why the MAHE & other authorities are keeping silent? All these bars should be moved out of Manipal. I think the bars belong to the "Big Brothers" ??!!

2.Innocent driver Anand Poojary was caught by Maharashtra police on the request of Manipal police and released after interrogation.(real Anand was hiding in Manipal only-name confusion)
3.IGP MrPratap Reddy: I have never faced such a tremedndous tension in criminal cases in 21years of Police life !
4:Rapist Hariprasad:We never planned it,but alcohol destroyed us.It encouraged us to kidpnap and rape a single girl who was going alone towards her flat.
5.Yogish did one good work before consuming poison. He revealed both his friends name to police before collapsing !
6.Sukesh Kumar was asked by police to contact Yogish who was in Mysore and bring him to Hiriadka.
7.First 3 days, police didn't get any clue.4th day, they ordered all rowdy sheeters to come to police station.Everyone came except YOGISH...real Investigation started from Day 4...
8.250 policemen(including high ranking officers) particiapted in this sensational Manipal Gang Rape case. They proved that they can catch any criminal if politicians don't interfere.Well DONE..

One bad incident need not be a frightening matter all together for the girl students folk. What ever had happened is bad and condemnable but people needs to look forward for good trend around by taking necessary confidence building measures.
1.Auto drivers union should approach University officials and both should take forward steps.
2.Students/public/parents meeting should be convened to instill confidence level in all sections of soceity.
3.Police should also take part in the process to take proactive role.
4.Night patrol should be made compulsary in twin cities.
5.Better politicians kept outsside the process for the time being or barred bringing politics as they always try to viciate the situation unnecessarily.
6.Nothing is immposible and there still hope and scope for improving law and order stituation because this Tulunaadu.Tulunaadu culture/heritage should needs to be preserved against all odds.
