Chaos at Kerala DGP's presser as former cop demands justice

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 1: A press conference by Kerala’s newly appointed Director General of Police (DGP) descended into chaos after a man identifying himself as a journalist interrupted the event, demanding justice for alleged harassment during his tenure in the police force.

The man was later identified as Basheer, a former Sub-Inspector who served at Kannavam Police Station in Kannur. Basheer disrupted the DGP’s briefing, stating, “I was in service for 30 years, but I did not get justice,” before being escorted out by police personnel.

Outside the venue, Basheer told reporters that despite a long and honest service, he was repeatedly denied justice. He also cited a formal complaint submitted by his wife, Sajitha, to the Kerala Chief Minister, which outlined the harassment he allegedly faced while performing his duties.

According to the complaint, on October 1, 2021, while on duty in Kotayil, Basheer was attacked by a prisoner named Uthaman—who was out on parole—along with nearly 20 others. A police case was registered following the incident, and Basheer had reportedly submitted an adverse parole report against Uthaman.

Sajitha’s letter also claimed that after the incident, defamatory photos of Basheer were circulated in newspapers and on social media in an attempt to malign his image. Under pressure, Basheer was allegedly transferred to Koothuparamba station.

Basheer used a media ID card from a Gulf-based online news portal to gain access to the press conference. His sudden outburst took police officials by surprise, and the DGP’s office has not issued an official response to the incident so far.
