Berlin, Jun 30: In a disappointing end to their FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 campaign, the Indian women’s hockey team suffered a 2-3 defeat against China on Sunday, resulting in their relegation from the elite tournament.

Despite a spirited display, India could not hold off a determined Chinese side, who sealed victory with goals from Ying Zhang (19', 30') and Xu Wenyu (53'). India’s goals came through Sunelita Toppo (9') and Rujuta Dadaso Pisal (38').

With this being their final match of the season, India finished at the bottom of the points table and now face relegation. To regain their spot in the FIH Pro League, they will need to compete in and win the upcoming FIH Nations Cup.

The match began with promise for India, as young Odisha forward Sunelita Toppo scored in the 9th minute following a sharp pass from Neha Goyal. The move showcased India's attacking intent early on. However, China retaliated quickly, earning a penalty corner in the 18th minute. While the initial attempt didn’t result in a goal, a penalty stroke was awarded following an unfortunate incident where Chinese player Deng Qiuchan was struck in the face by Indian defender Manisha Chauhan while attempting to clear the ball. Despite India's appeal, the decision stood, and Ying Zhang converted to level the scores.

Zhang struck again in the 30th minute to give China a 2-1 lead before Rujuta Dadaso Pisal equalised in the 38th minute, reigniting India’s hopes. But in the 53rd minute, Xu Wenyu’s goal shattered India’s comeback bid, sealing a 3-2 win for China.

The final standings of the season saw the Netherlands clinching the top spot, followed by Argentina and Belgium. China secured fourth place, while India’s last-place finish marked a tough exit from the tournament.

While the Indian team showed glimpses of brilliance, inconsistency and defensive lapses proved costly. The focus will now shift to regrouping and preparing for the FIH Nations Cup, where a strong showing will be crucial for re-entry into the Pro League.
