Mangalore: Murder of bank official at Kapikad - Accused lover arrested

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jun 25: The policemen of Urwa police station have at last succeeded in arresting the accused, who allegedly killed Anjana K C (23), assistant manager with Syndicate Bank, Katipalla branch, at his rented home at Kapikad Bejai in the city on April 18.

Anjana, a native of Kozhikode in Kerala, is said to have come into contact with the accused, who was working in a food joint in a shopping mall in Bejai, and the acquaintance soon developed into mutual love, it is said.

The arrest was made from near Udupi railway station on Monday June 24.

The accused arrested has been identified as Mahesh alias Santosh (35) from Gunade village in Khed taluk of Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra. The accused, who had given his name as Mahesh at a couple of places he worked in Mangalore, had never provided his employers his proper addres. This had created bottlenecks in police investigation.

Anjana, who lived in Syndicate Bank quarters in Gandhinagar here, was reportedly escorted by Mahesh to his home in Kapikad. He had killed her by tightening a rope around her neck. The owner of the house, who heard the victim’s groans at night, saw the lady in a critical condition on a chair, while Mahesh was not to be seen. She was admitted into a private hospital and then to Wenlock Hospital, as her identity could not be established. Anjana had died the next day.

Anjana’s mother had filed a missing complaint in Barke police station, as her daughter did not return home after leaving bank that day. It was learnt that she was not aware that her daughter was visiting Mahesh that day. As Anjana was found murdered in Kapikad the next day, the case was shifted to Urwa police station.

Mahesh had changed the sim of his cell phone after escaping from Mangalore, but not the set. He borrowed the sim of card of a friend for the purpose. This made the task of the policemen easier in locating his whereabouts.

It is learnt that Mahesh had also murdered another woman named Rajeshwari in Mulund, Maharasthra, in 2008, after falling in love with her. He was granted parole in the case after remaining behind bar for three years. Instead of going back to jail, he had jumped parole and gone missing by shifting base to Mangalore. In Mangalore, he initially worked for a bar near KSRTC bus stand. He later worked for 'Fish Monger' in Big Bazar here. He also worked in Poonja International Hotel and Bombay Sales, which deals in women’s wear, on Central Market Road.

Mahesh had come in contact with Anjana, who used to visit his outlet, when working in Fish Monger at Big Bazar. He also supplied fish to her home. Both of them had agreed to marry each other, but parents of Anjana did not approve this relationship. The parents were not prepared to give their daughter, a rank holder in MBA and working as assistant manager in a bank, to Mahesh, who was not educated, and did not have a permanent job. Anjana and Mahesh fought on this issue, as Anjaya was obedient to her parents, it is gathered. After Anjana told him that she required Rs 1,000 urgently, Mahesh invited her to his room on April 16 evening. Anjana, who went to his room at around 7.15 am, was found in a critical condition from his room at night. During his interrogation, Mahesh told the police that he was angered by the rejection of Anjana to his marriage proposal.

The police have learnt that Mahesh escaped to Gujarat after the murder, before travelling to Mumbai and Nepal. He returned to his hometown in Ratnagiri. Instead of going to his native place, he chose to stay with his niece, Anita, who lives in Kalapur in Raigarh district, for six weeks. There, he worked in a garments shop and earned Rs 10,000 per month.

Urwa police inspector, Ramachandra Maledevar led the operation. The accused was presented before the magistrate on Monday night.

I am glad this rakshas has been caught. I hope law does not allow him to escape this time and gives severe punishment for killing not one but two women. RIP Anjana and Rajeshwari. Nobody deserves to die for choosing a wrong partner.

Blind love has no consideration for education or status!! It is purely the play of passion and hormones!! There are so many cases happening where the girl from an affluent family with good educational background eloping with their vehicle drivers and girls from very good families running away with roadside heroes of different caste!! A very famous case still lingering on is the Arushi case!!

One thing I do not understand here is how come a bank manager felt the need to borrow Rs 1000 from the accused?

    Yogesh,

To some extent what you have said holds good.

For the past few months there are so many cases of grown up girls missing, committed suicide, so on. ..

shall we blame all such incidents as "Love is blind" or pass-time affairs ?

I wish Mr. Bhandarkar comes out hiding place and pass some comments. Always humorous.
    Bhandarkar, we miss you.

Not an educated but master minded. With good education would have been an International crook. Jack of all (bad) trades.

That means Mangalore police are not bad in performing their duties.

Hopefully, Some good positive result will emerge in Manipal rape case in the near future.

    Good luck.

This is how we destroy ourselves by our own foolishness and blame the police. A rank holder in MBA and asst manager in Syndicate Bank, falling in love with a man who works as a labourer, and asking for Rs 1000 from him is nothing but stupidity. I feel pity of this educated woman. Secondly look at our judiciary, the same man who murdered some other woman in Mulund is given parole, and he escaped to commit one more murder.

..Its called love blindness..she is educated, working as Assistant manager in Govt bank & she fell in love with this criminal/crook!!..He was doing petty jobs here & there, he was from a place which is not familiar to her (atleast to check his history)..If she can not judge what is bad or good for her, then what is the use of education she got!!..It will be easy to police dpet if they install single data base of criminals of all state..

Jhanavi, i guess you arent watching CID serial, which is broadcast since 15 years. Please watch it. You will know how crimes are committed, how the offenders are caught, and maybe if someone keeps watching the serial regularly, they can outsmart them too. These days information is available on every media on every subject matter in this universe and beyond perhaps.

Love is Blind - Agreed. How a rank holder and bank manager is falling in love with such uneducated & stupid person? If she was obedient to her parents she should have avoided him or should not have gone to his room alone. Cant believe she will go to his room to borrow 1000 Rs ?

We are in 2013, people still employ without any proper documentation and back ground check - this is ridiculous.

The problem with todays employers is that they never bother to do a background check on their employees. Considering todays labour issues, they are ever ready and more than happy to hire a hand, without understanding that it could lead to unforeseen issues and consequences. Someone should educate these business owners. Hope this will improve.

For Mangalore police It took less than 3 months to arrest the accused.
Slow but steady wins the race. We hope the process at Manipal would be faster than this.
