Bangalore : Senior citizen found chained on roof of son's house

Chained and left to rot, senior citizen walks to freedom

Updated

Bangalore, Jun 6 (DHNS): A 93-year-old man was rescued by the City police from the terrace of his house near Banashankari Temple where his family had allegedly chained him for the last one-and-a-half years. The nonagenarian was hardly fed, and left to defecate in a narrow open space.

Anantaiah Setty was on Wednesday found chained below an elevated platform erected for the overhead tank.

H S Revanna, DCP (South), said he was “shocked” to find the elderly man in such an “inhuman” condition. “The space was not secure from the scorching sun, the biting cold and harsh rains. He was simply at the mercy of God,” Revanna said. “The space was stinking as he had been defecating in the open. He was fed in the same filthy place.”

Setty, who was later shifted to Jayanagar General Hospital, said his family was “indifferent” to his plight. “They didn’t look after me well. Not a single day in the last 18 months did they give me two square meals. I was left with no option but to beg in the neighbourhood,” he told Deccan Herald.

The incident came to light when residents of Shakambari Nagar, where the family lives, tipped off a Kannada news channel about Setty. Residents attributed their activism to the rescue of P Hemavathi who was allegedly confined to her house for a decade. The television channel, with police in tow, then “raided” the house.

‘Mentally unsound’

As the police team went to rescue Setty, his third son Suresh Kumar and daughter-in-law Kalpana ran up to the terrace, claiming  Setty was mentally unsound.

“His condition had not improved even after medical care. He had become a social nuisance. Hence, we chained him,” they said.

The police team, however, rescued the man against his family’s wishes. Revanna said the JP Nagar police had taken up a suo motu case of illegal confinement. Kumar and Kalpana were arrested, and released on bail by the 5th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM).

Father of four well-settled sons who live in separate houses, and two daughters, Setty said Suresh Kumar and Kalpana chained him on the terrace a year and a half ago. “They would take me in only at night and when it rained,” he added. His son as well as the neighbours, however, claimed he was chained just six months ago. “Setty is incoherent and cannot even speak clearly,” they said.

Hope not lost

Setty says he has not lost all hope. He wishes to get adequate medical care and lead a normal life again. A native of Maralavadi village in Kanakapura taluk, Setty is resolute in his decision to not go back to his family. “I wish someone takes me to an ashram in Maralavadi,” he said. “At least I’ll get two square meals a day there.”

Doctors at Jayanagar General Hospital say Setty has lost reflexes in his left leg which was chained. He also had a festering wound in the ankle due to the rubbing of chain.

Detailed examination

Setty underwent a detailed medical examination and was referred to Jayadeva Hospital for electrocardiography. He was then shifted back to Jayanagar General Hospital. Several tests were to be conducted on him to ascertain the exact condition of his health, a senior doctor at the hospital said.

The procedure would take a day.

Earlier Report

Bangalore, Jun 5 (NDTV): A senior citizen in Bangalore was rescued today from the roof of his son's house, where he was regularly kept chained. Neighbours phoned the police for help.

"They tied me up today...They give me food, rice and saru..." said the man to a local television channel. Disturbing images before he was unchained show him crouching under a small enclose under the water tank on the roof. He was lying with his legs bent on a faded mattress, an empty plate next to him.

"There was a foul smell...it was totally unhygienic," said senior police officer Revanna. The rescued man has been moved to a hospital and the police says it's likely to file a case against his son for illegal confinement and physical abuse.

The senior citizen's son, Suresh Hanumanthaiah Shetty lives in a lower middle-class neighbourhood and admitted that his father's chaining was a regular practice.  "He would keep making the house dirty. So in the morning we bring him and keep him here. In the evening we take him inside."

He insisted, "We give him food three times a day, morning, afternoon and evening. We give him a bath in the morning."

His wife, Kalpana, said that her father-in-law was kept locked up for his own good.  She said he often had diarrhoea and would "dirty the house" but added that was not the motive for banishing him to the roof.

"We have only tied him up because he might fall down the stairs. That is the only reason...six months ago, he fell from the steps in another son's house."

The horrors of his story follow that of a 34-year-old woman who was rescued from her parents' home in Bangalore yesterday where she was kept locked up for five years.

This is an unfotunate and condemnable incident of Bangalore. No one can be taken as good and will take care in your old age.The best thing old people can do is, not to transfer their property to the children and any trasnsfer or sharing is through will operative after the death of old people. Retain the ownership of the property till death.Government also to enact some act to safe guard the interst of the old citizens.Imprison the son with his wife who are culprit in this case.Thanq.

I am asking simple question to the old mans children, when they are small and making dirty in the bed whether the father chained them outside the house? if not? what right they have got to do this, so I request public chain the husband and wife in the same way, so they will understand the feeling and pain how old man suffered.

I request all the philanthropists, the property builders and the Government to come forward and build Shelters for Senior Citizens at two to three localities with good open spaces for outdoor activities.
Type-1: Clusters of Cottages for rich senior citizens through ownership and monthly maintenance charges
Type-2: Apartment Blocks for affordable senior citizens for a Fees and a Refundable Deposits
Type-2: Tiled Blocks for the discarded or deserted senior citizens for Free

The ideal Old-age Home should have two different schemes:
Paid Shelter (For Affordable Senior Citizens): This should be for the senior citizens who wish to get admission in the old age home after registration and other procedures prescribed by the Home Trust.
They should be charged nominal Fees per month and a Refundable Deposit.

Free Shelter (For Discarded or Deserted Senior Citizens): This should be basically to provide shelter and other facilities free of cost for the senior citizens who are discarded or deserted by their own relatives.
Admission should be provided to both male and female senior citizens.

The Shelters should have the following
    Facilities:
    Single/double rooms
    Full boarding and lodging facility
    Library
    Indoor games
    Up-coming beautiful garden and landscaping
    Services:
    Nutritious food
    Regular yoga and private prayers
Walking track and garden patch for light exercises
Regular medical checkups by doctors including specialties
    Periodic outings and cultural programs
Home nurse services for the bed-ridden.

It is really sad to read this article. I remember an incident that I read some years back. The son having fed up with his old parents breaking plates, went to his garage and started carving a wooden bowl to serve food to his old parents. His tiny son observed what father was doing and asked what is it he is doing? Father explained to his son the reality. A few days later, father heard some sound in the garage and went to investigate. To his surprise, he so his son trying to do exactly what he was doing few weeks earlier. He asked what is he doing? Son replied - Dad, when you become old, I need to make sure you too have a wooden bowl. Tears started pouring down his eyes. He immediately went in and destroyed the wooden bowl and started looking at his parents as a real son to his parents. We do learn lessons from our tiny tots - many times. Hope we all get enlightenment from this

We are guaranteed to get the same treatment the way we treat our parents, when our parents are ageing. It is because our children keep looking/listening at us when we are rude at our parents. Our children will be of the opinion that it is the way we treat a person who is old/aged. They do not know what is right and what is wrong. We need to educate our children on it.
Give your parents utmost respect and care as much as you can because when they are ageing they don't expect their children to give money or an independent house to stay in but they just need your love. That' it! For once give that and see the happiness on their face. That is something like you own an invaluable possession.
    I love my parents!!!

If you give them good life, education, luxuries... don't assume, you will be looked after well, when you become old. It's destiny, if you are lucky you will get it, otherwise you will not.
There is no guarantee, your son/daughter, after achieving something big, will treat you well.

Many a times there are members in the family who become 'unmanageble'. Their behavier becomes erratic, causing embarrasment to the family. In some cases they will be afflicted by chronic illness for which the family may not be in a position to attend due to financial concern or modern day pressures. It is not easy to find a shelter/home to take care of the such. The govt or NGO or the community should start homes for such and the destitues so that they will live the life with dignity. It should be our social responsibility.

This old man worked for 40 years in a small shop near K.R.Market, bought property and built house. Raised four children and married them off. Stayed with second son in his own house, built a grocery shop for running family of second son. Son and daughter-in-law took good care of this old man. Old man was coerced to hand over property and shop in his son's name. After getting all property in their name, children dumped this old man. He was not given proper food. He was forced to beg with public to eat some food. When son came to know about it, he threatened father not to put son's reputation at risk, and chained him near water tank. For past few days there were heavy rains with wind and lightening. It is a miracle that a 93 year old man survived rain despite suffering from acute hunger.

He is alive to tell to the world his STORY !! God is using his life as a lesson for each and everyone of us to treat parents with respect and utmost dignity. Gods' greatest incarnation is Man himself, and we must treat Man with reverence.

Looking at these kind of treatment from children to their ageing parents, who have spent almost everything to give them education\better life, we should learn a lesson from this and should not indulge too much in pampering children to the extent where nothing is left for our old age.
It is very advisable to make provision first for the old age and remaining spend for other things.
If we do not make such arrangement early enough, I do not think any one can blame their children for not taking care.
In this hectic\expensive world even the children find it difficult to give proper attention to their parents when they become old as they themselves are in tight situation where they have to spend so much on children education, cost of housing, skyrocketing food prices, both husband\wife have to work from early morning till late night (before office hours\after office hours too) leaving them exhausted physically and mentally. There will be hardly enough left for any thing like keeping the old in hospital or old age homes (deposit itself is so huge and not refundable plus monthly expenses towards food\additional medical exp. etc)
I wonder how many working persons can manage these type of expense.
In that situation, children chain their parents fearing falls\injuries which will compound their difficulties\worries. They are in a double fix - flak from public and others.
I empathize with the sons\daughters with such catch 22 situations.
Just wondering, how many from here having their own family would leave their job to take care of their parents...!!!

    Simple, Blr,

Your observations are absolutely correct. Current generation is in tremendous pressure to deliver good. But in the current case, the old man had settled lives of all his children, purchased properties for them in prime areas, which value crores in bangalore, he did everything to secure lives of his children. Old man did everything for his children so that his children wont have to work hard and earn money, property. All are trying to build houses, make property, and make money ... and many people are working for life to realize these dreams, which old mad did for his children 30 years back when prices were not too competitive.

As you may be aware, the land owners and people having couple of sites in Bangalore ( Capital is a boon for some), build plenty of rented houses, shops, commercial, office spaces, and loot money from tenants. The so called owners of houses are leading a perfectly lavish life without much tension. They are just bothered with making more money and let out every month income to BADDI VYAVAHARA. WOrking class people have to work hard, struggle a lot and earn in profits. Majority of the profits will be sucked by these owners by way of rent, interest on money etc. 75 percent of Bangalore population lives in rented houses and their plight is understandable, miserable. Owners wil increase rent every 11 month by 20 to 30 percent as against legal 5 percent. Though there are no hikes in salaries, IT boom coming down, and jobs with no security. these insensitive OWNERS have NO humane face to treat tenants with KIND HEART. Even one day delay in paying bills will be amounting to penalty money, one has to face abuses and threats. Bangalore life has become HELL for middle class, and poor people.... this is a reality I am speaking here.

Old Man built heaven for his children, but his children dont realize the worth of it !! We do.

@simple, Bangalore, whatever may be the circumstances but no human deserves this kind of treatment. I am sure at old age they definitely are not looking for our wealth and pomp, they just need love, care and a rest after all they toiled all their life to raise the young ones. This man is telling that they didn’t provide him with at least 2 meals a day. When he was young I am sure he must have had 1 meal and sacrificed the other for the sake of his kids. Is this too much he is asking from his children to provide him with at least 2 meals a day.

Some observations I'd like to share...
Living long may not be a curse, but not being able to do anything on your own and being dependent is , whatever be said and done.
It is also a 'test of character' for all concerned.
It is at this juncture the 'old' realize what life is really all about and their 'misplaced priorities' when they were young and capable.
This is a circle which comes in everybody's life who leaves beyond 70 years.
At the above age stipulated you come to know who really loved you but then it might be too late.
Therefore do whatever little good you can when you are capable. It will 'come back' to help you when in need.
There is no point blaming anybody standing at the 'peripherals'. This
is the most easiest thing to do.For those who run charity organisations, old homes and the like are no different either with their 'domestic stories'having the 'same tales' to reveal.

No one takes care of him .The son who did this notorious act(Claims that he did this for good reason) with his father claims that this property was been gifted to him by his father 4 years back ( i do not think so , he may have taken it force fully) . This idiot can digest his fathers property and cannot take care of his old father . This is becoming a trend nowadays we feel our grand parents/ parents as a headache for us , and they use to treat us as a shining star . Elders are a blessing for us and not a headache we should respect them and take care of them.Else days are not so far when we will receive same respect from our children's .

How rude is the son who chained his own father just because he is making dirty in the house!? When the son reaches that age I do not know what he will do? Question is if the children can not take care of their aged father they would have put him in a old age home instead of torchering him. I feel very sad for that old man!.

This is a sad case. In the present family situation where both the husband and wife need to work in order to make a comfortable living it is always not possible to look after their elderly parents properly especially if they are not fully healthy and normal. Under the circumstances I world not blame the son for such treatment of his elderly father though I don't condone his action. This story should remind all elderly parents to plan in advance to make their own provision to look after themselves during their evening years and not to depend upon their children. The parents role gets finished when they bring up their children, give them proper education and help them find a job, and then on the parents should save and concentrate on their well being and old age care. The olden type of thinking that the children will take well care of them doesn't exist any longer even in a conventional society like India. The Government also has a role to play in deserving cases like this in that some social security and free or conessional old age care should be made available.

THIS IS ONLY TIPPEST OF THE TIP OF THE ICE BERG IN THESE SITUATIONS.
REALITIES OF LIFE IN THE FRONT LINE ARE TOTALLY COMPELLING AND OFTEN WEAKER FAIL MISERABLY.
THERE IS NO RESPITE FOR THE OLD AND WEEK.
THIS IS THE TRUTH OF LIFE.
MANY NAY DISAGREE BUT FACT IS SACRED AND THE REST....???

How come a son can do this to his own father? There are many "joru-ka-gulam" in this world I mean such men go to any extent to please their wives. My question is, can these wives do the similar act to their own father?

A quite old man was illtreated by his son and was totally neglected and also kept in seclusion was provided with a blanket and a bowl. This went on well for a quite some time.Old man's grandson watched how his grandfather is treated. When the old man passed away the grandson collected the bowl and blanket and preserved it in his room. This was noticed by the Son and he asked this small boy why he is very particular about these two garbage pieces he is keeping with him? The grandson told his father that when 'YOU become old like my grandfather these two items may come handy'

    dear prithvi,

for your information things are happening good soon after congress comes to power. one woman was locked up to four years by their family members in your backyard and it's all happened in bjp's rule. what bjp govt. did to rescue the poor girl. sharing your opinion is always good and welcome. but just think about that what you are writing.
