Bangalore: Relief - High court grants bail to Naveen Soorinje

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Mar 18: In a huge relief to journalist Naveen Soorinje, who was arrested last November in connection with the infamous Padil home stay case, the high court on Monday March 18 granted him bail.

Soorinje, who was one of the 44 accused in the case, was arrested on November 7 in a flash operation by Kankanady police led by circle inspector Ravish Naik.

It is said that Vijaykumar, one of the victims in the attack, had written a letter to the Press Council of India alleging that Soorinje had been falsely accused in the case by the police to cover their own inefficiency. The letter was produced in the court on Monday during the hearing, and Vijaykumar also appeared as a witness for Soorinje and claimed that he had in fact tried to save them.

Also, it was noted that the video footage of the incident did not show Naveen Soorinje as taking part in the attack.

Justice K Sreedhar Rao granted him bail on a surety bond of Rs 5 lac and on the condition that he should not attempt to destroy any evidence in the case.

Ever since Soorinje's arrest, various associations and members of the media have been calling for his release. His bail petitions were at first rejected by the JMFC court, and then a stay on the FIR against him was ordered by the high court. However, despite the stay order, he was not released. Later, the high court too rejected him bail.

Mediapersons in Bangalore went on a hunger strike, after which the government dropped charges against him. The decision was questioned by the high court.

With the bail order now coming from the high court, Soorinje is expected to be released from the district jail in a couple of days.

But for soorinje's video proof the moral police would have easily got bail. just see how those 19 people who attacked a Prayer hall near udupi last week under the pretext of stopping Conversion, easily got bail very next day even though they had beaten the praying people more brutally than Mangalore's Homestay and thy had to be hospitalized for many days. Homestay attackers are in Jail since 7 months only because of video proof of Navin soorinje. If the Udupi prayer hall had CC TV then we could have seen the brutality of the attack.

    100% agree with G Z T Kunte.
You have touched the 2 core issues here.
    a) 19 people who attacked a Prayer hall near udupi last week under the pretext of stopping Conversion, easily got bail very next day even though they had beaten the praying people more brutally than Mangalore's Homestay and many had to be hospitalized for many days. They have beaten even a old woman here. As there was no CCTV camera, they were easily given bail.
b.Homestay attackers are in Jail since 7 months only because of video proof of Navin soorinje. If the Udupi prayer hall had CC TV then we could have seen the brutality of the attack. - THIS IS THE POWER OF MEDIA.

That is why, we appreciate Naveen.

Its absolutely ridiculous to say that he called the CI and his number was unavailable, I am sure that were enough ways to contact the police if he did'nt want to miss out on sensational news. If it were his friends/relatives he would have definitely managed to inform the police before reaching there. Think!!!

Congratulations to journalist Naveen Soorinje finally obtaining the bail order from High Court.

You have proved to the world, what really l bold journalism could do for the society. Only because of your bold step of displaying the live act of molestation of women/girls by the goons displayed on the TV, forced the law enforcement agencies to take some stern action. Even though u have suffered for the cause of justice, you are a model to the journalist and media community.

We are very proud of your Mr. Naveen Soorinje. Keep up your good work.

This guy Navin is a bigger criminal then the cruel and stupid guys who attacked the girls at homestay.
If he was honest and a good man he would have first tried to save this attack from happening.
Just imagine if anyone with good intentions knows of a crime about to happen, instead of saving the victims this person tries to film it and most of the mangaloreans think he is a great guy.
Just imagine a girl who is to be raped and the person who has this information in advance tries to film it and most people think this guy has done it for evidence, how stupid can this be.

If the attackers are criminals , Navin is a double criminal for publisizing the crime and ruining the status of the victims.

Just imagine your fly. member being attacked and some stupid guy like Navin filming it, would you be happy about it.

Come on Mangaloreans, Wake up and see the real criminal, dont make him a hero.

Thank God, finally journalist Naveen Soorinje got bail and relief!
He was accused for not sharing
Prior information about Padil Home stay attack to Police!
Now question in the minds of the people is, had he given prior information to Police, whether the attack could have been no averted?
Or evidence of attack would have been destroyed to prevent punishment to the attackers?

Very unfortunate.. He was only person who had the prior information about the attacks and only person would have avoided the attacks had he acted timely. Instead, he came up with all the equipments and cotinued with his DUTY(?) as if he is covering an event. He would even continued shooting till the girls are stripped off!!! Any way.. congrats to media for your EFFORTS(?). Pls continue ur hunger strike for ur another freind who have been FALSELY(?) accused in fake passport racket..

The false charges made against him also should be ped. He had exposed the reality of goondaism to the public, which would have been otherwise gone uncovered.

If the plight of a journalist had to be this in the hands of politicians and biased police department, imagine that of ordinary citizen.Hope final judgement of this case holds police dept. responsible for wrongfully detaining. In future the police should not dance to the tune of politicians or go after someone for exposing their failure.Congrats Mr. Navin.Keep up the good work.

Very sad…. We are in largest democratic country and expecting justice to the common people, but the people who cheat the country and people get bail without problem. It is common that the politician who were caught in corruption/cheating and even in murder charges gets bails without any problem.

His timely presence with vedio footage brought lot of shame to police, and govt. It was a open evidence. So the case went on. Other wise like all church attacks this also would have vanisheed in the dark. As we all know when police arrives except in ed cases. Police arrives alwasys late to file clossure report only.
