Mangalore, Feb 18: The annual Kodial Theru or Car Festival of Lord Venkataramana Temple came to a brilliantly colouful end here on Monday February 18, with thousands gathering at the temple square in Car Street to celebrate Okkuli festival.

Young and old alike rejoiced in the colours of the festival, drenching themselves and each other in hues of green, red, pink, yellow, blue and what not.

The beat of drums and the dancing crowd added extra spark to the holi celebrations, even as the idol of the Temple deity was carried on a golden palanquin.

Vasant puja and other rituals were peformed on the occasion inside the Temple premises.

The annual five-day festival is special to the Gowd Saraswat Brahmin (GSB) community and is a commemoration of the divine union of Lord Venkataramana and Goddess Padmavathi.

The main celebration consists of the Car Festival and carrying of the deity on a palaquin around the city.

DJs and Nasik bands added more color to the event along with water tankers gushing waters on the jubilant crowd.

    @Mr/Ms.Lalith,Mangalore
    Among the commments, yours is only one which describes the age old GSB traditional 'okkul' in a way which fits to YOUR mindset....no problem...
    I would clarify that okkul is a joyful/colorful holi type enjoyment among devlotees of the temple after annual Utsav.This is a tradition since ages.As you stated, the western dress outfits among girls/boys has no meaning here as this is not occasion for formals.Girls/young boys never induced and consume bhang.Bhang is very casually put in use by elders out of pure joy.I fail to undertand how you see pub and western culture here as the occasion is purely family oriented one.The speciality of the event is that every participant is very respectfully behaved just like one family members.That is GSB culture not only here but every where.

    I do see a lot of western culture in the outfits worn.Drinking bang and dancing on the street is tradition which is acceptable going to the pubs and drinking alchol and dancing is banned??? double standards here..and dj music??? hopefully the so called protecters of indian tradition are keeping an eye on what the youg girls are consuming here..dont get me wrong am not against holi
