David Cameron pushes Mumbai-Bangalore corridor

MUMBAI, Feb 18 (Reuters) : British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Monday he wanted his country's companies to help India develop new cities and districts along a 1,000 km (600 mile) corridor between Mumbai and Bangalore, generating investment projects worth up to $25 billion.

Kicking off a three-day visit to India with the largest trade delegation taken abroad by a British prime minister, Cameron said he wanted British firms to work with the Indian and British governments to develop nine districts to link Mumbai, India's financial capital, with Bangalore, its tech hub.
"With me I've got architects, planners and finance experts who can work out the complete solution," he told an audience of business people and workers at Hindustan Unilever Limited.

"It would unleash India's potential along the 1,000 km from Mumbai to Bangalore, transforming lives and putting British businesses in prime position to secure valuable commercial deals."
India should open up its markets to allow foreign direct investment in hitherto closed sectors, he added.
His office said forecasts showed 5.8 percent of India's population growth would be in the corridor, contributing 11.8 percent of the country's gross domestic product growth by 2020.

The first phase of the project would involve investment in physical infrastructure, such as transport networks, telecommunications and power generation. Later construction would concentrate on social infrastructure such as welfare and education.

India has pushed the building of giant development "corridors" to accelerate the growth of its manufacturing base, which has lagged behind its IT and services industry.

The government has also planned to build 24 new industrial cities along a 1,483 km (920 mile) railway line between New Delhi and Mumbai with Japanese funding, but the project has progressed slowly.
Cameron's office said British and Indian officials had been working with business representatives from the two countries on the Mumbai-Bangalore project since last year and had produced an initial assessment of its scale and potential.

The British government would be willing to co-fund a feasibility study, on a match funding basis, with the Indian government costing up to 1 million pounds.

By 2030, if realised, the project could generate close to half a million jobs, while indirect jobs could bring the total in the region to two million, Cameron's office said.
"Our initial scoping work suggests that accommodating the 3-4 million people attracted to each of the new cities would require close to 1 million new homes, up to 120 schools, 10 colleges and hospitals," the office said.

Cameron also said Britain planned to change the visa system to allow Indian business people to get a visa in one day.

Definitely it is appropriate to say, bcoz our political scenario and mainly politicians we are not able to move forward especially in Basic Infrastructure. Our all Govts. announces big big projects but never completes but scams and corruption. See any developmental works whether NH17 or B-M corridor,,etc.
India is capable of doing all BUT not the Indian System.

British technology is obviously a JUNK technology. British, Portuguese, French, Dutch etc are very lazy people and loot masters. They are still living on looted money. They can not do hard work and they not let others to do hard work in their country. That is why they were planning to send Indian doctors back home some time back. As said by INFOSYS NANDAN NILEKANI, the WORLD IS FLAT, you can move to any country to work and succeed in life.

India has produced global IT Gaints like Infosys, Wipro, Mindtree, Mahindra, I-Gate, HCL, TCS etc etc. UK has not produced even 10% of this.

When it comes to invention and technology USA, Germany, Korea, Switzerland, Japan, China etc comes first in the list. When it comes to QUALITY work, Indians comes first. That is the reason BILL GATES chosen BENGALURU as its first NON-US office for MICROSOFT. Computer has been invented by US people and contribution of Indians are huge for Software development, application development and for operating system.

You invest money to gain profit the same ways develop your infrastructure to attract more business to India. We have all talents in India but not used rightly. All our talents outsdie India makes great contribution to other nations whereas our politicians makes us ashamed even to get a simple business licence make so difficult. it is all politics, corruption and communalism makes India go backward rather forward. Even some in this discussion board still talks comumalism rather business who has no clue abt it

He is not talking about roads which already exist in a very good condition (for a change) between Mumbai and Bangalore. He is talking about the whole industrial and residential infrastructure along this whole route which can accelerate development. If you look at Bangalore-Mysore industrial corridor (NICE) which is managed by Indians and which is only 100 Kms long, you can see that even after 15 years it has got to nowhere. That is where our "expertise" stands right now.

Giridar Bajpur...only british built bridges and roads have survived in India today. Todays roads and bridges quality is such that finding difficult to celebrate first year of inauguration!!! Our railway dabbas are same old condition...Look at British trains and tracks,,,look at the cleanliness and usable toilets in every stations...They have moved ahead and we are still or moving backward interms of railway and roads.....Had they left 20 years late, we would have better roads and more rail tracks. Why feel shame to appreciate which is good and learn from it!

This is business procurement plan of British for their businessmen!
We have to think business prospects for our businessmen!
When Indigenous technology is good enough why to involve foreign countries?
To escalate cost and squeeze more taxes from us?

For sure we need british ideas to be successful. We have all kind of knowledges in India but not used in a right time and rigth place. look at China the best infrastructures are in place which allows one to make a plan to start business there whereas in India people are just drive and fall in the diteches wehere roads are in developed, airports are falling in the ditches, rail roads are same build by the britishers used at this moment. If India has all then why India still lacking the basic infrastructure? anyone know? Only when indian firms run these infrastuctures project all hendu, pendu from Indian govt demand bribe when it is for international firm the bribe level goes very low level. David cameron has a great plan and india must go head with it and see how the country will prosper. it will benifit India as well as UK and people look at india for more business. Many westers only worried abt India infrastutrue which is not good. so many people die just lack of good roads

Mumbai-Bangalore corridor will be better than Bangalore-Chennai Corridor since it will passe thru at least 12 districts of our state.

There was a proposal of BLR-chennai corridor by a japanese company. Govt should not encourage this since kannadigas will be at least benefit from this.

    @Charles D'Mello,Pangala,
Our road conditions itself speak about the expertise we can be proud of.
Surely Cameron meant was to invest USD.25 billion, which am sure U know very well India has to acquire through FDI.
You must also know Indian infrastructure lags behind that of China due to the lack of FDI which India is unable to attract on a sure footed pace.

Britishers came to India for trade and ruled us for 100 years. During the tenure, looted us for more than 25 billion. Now again they are planning to come to India in the form of investment. India should not fall prey to these people. We are capable enough to build our own infrastructure.
