Mangalore, Jan 12:
Dakshina Kannada district administration in association with Ramakrishna Math organized a grand procession here on Saturday January 12 to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekannada.

District incharge minister C T Ravi and deputy commissioner N Prakash flagged off the rally in the presence of MLA Krishna Palemar, ZP CEO Dr Vijay Prakash, Nitte Education Trust chairman N Vinay Hegde, MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik and others.

The procession started from Nehru Maidan and culminated at Ramakrishna Math, passing through Pandeshwar and Mangaldevi.

Thousands of school and college students took part in the procession.

Later, 'Viveka Sanchalana' programme was organized at the premises of Sri Ramakrishna Math.

The programm instilled a sense of vibrancy among youths and students as the speakers effectively delivered their talk on the life and message of India's most adored saint Swami Vivekananda. Thousands of students from various colleges in the city were part of the programme.

The programme was jointly organized by youth and sports affairs department, DK district, Sri Ramakrishna Math and Swami Vivekananda 150th Birth Anniversary celebration committee.

Inaugurating the programme, state higher education minister and district in-charge minister C T Ravi said that the message and thoughts of Swami Vivekananda should be included in the school syllabuses not only in India, but also in educational institutions across the globe. "This year which marks Swami's 150th birth anniversary should be the year of determination and awareness among Indian youths," he asserted.

"Swami said there is divinity in everybody’s soul, hence there is need for individuals to awaken that internal strength," he added.

Lamenting on the modern materialistic way of life, the minister said that money can be compared to water while sailing on a boat. "If the water exceeds its limit and gushes into the boat, the boat may sink. Same way, money too can sink a person if it exceeds limit," he said.

He further said that Swami Vivekananda portrayed true India to the world. "The nation is gradually losing its moral base, which is the reason behind inhuman acts like rape," he pointed out.

MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik said that Swami Vivekananda had called upon the younger generations to grow into men of character. "Swami is an inspiring icon of the nation, an inspiration for change to take place," he said, adding, "All Indians should develop reverence for the soldiers who have been safeguarding our country across the border."

MLC Monappa Bhandary, DC N Prakash, ZP CEO Dr K N Vijay Prakash, Ananthkrishna of Karnataka Bank, Anwar Manippady, Swami Jithakamanada Swami of Sri Ramakrishna Math among others were present.

Few quotes from Swami Vivekananda..If money help a man to do good to others, it is of some value but if not, it is simply a mass of evil, and the sooner it is got rid of the better. 2) Condemn none if you can stretch out a helping hand, do so. If you cannot, fold your hands, bless your brother, and let them go their own way.

Celebration is only an eye wash or a mere ritual.I feel so after seeing many faces/frontliners in the procession.
Poor childrens are deprived of the previledge to know the life of Swami Vivekananda as inclusion of such subjects in our school syllabus will amount to "Kesarikarana" by psuedos.

Swami Vivekananda propagated 'men of character'which should be followed through out life.Sadly, character is secondary in our life and we just celebrating saint's birth anniversaries but not following their teachings.

Well disciplined colorful functions in undivided districts shows our commitment towards the teaching of SWAMI VIVEKANANDA.
