Udupi, Jun 10: As per the complaint of the locals about the wells getting contaminated due to Yellur Power Corporation, the officials of the Environment Control Board paid a visit to Yellur village on Friday June 8.

Rajashekar Puranik, Udupi district environment officer of State Environment Control Board visited the houses of Kariya Shetty, Thaje Jayanth Kumar, Vimala Muggethri of Uloor gram and took some water for further examination.

They acted according to the complaint lodged at the Udupi DC’s office by Jayanth Kumar.

Addressing reporters, Puranik said that in the primary examination, the contamination in the water was not found. “However, for better results, the collected water will be sent to the laboratory. Moreover, salinity in the wells was noticed in the places of Ulloor and Ulloor Guthu”, said Puranik.

The colour of the water in the well of Yellur gram panchayat member Jayanth Kumar had drastically changed in the past two days. “Consequently, while taking bath, the body started itching,” complained Geetha Jayanth Kumar.

Later, the officers visited the places of UPCL project and Santoor fly ash pond. They informed the presspersons that there were no such problems from those projects. “Every month there is an inspection carried out to verify the work,” he added.
