Bangalore: Woman Killed in Mock Fire Drill

Bangalore, Feb 24 (IANS): A mock fire drill turned tragic in Bangalore Friday when a 25-year-old woman participant fell to her death, police said.

The woman, identified as Nalini, a garment factory worker at Peenya industrial estate in north Bangalore, suffered severe head injuries as she fell from the third floor of the factory building and died on way to a hospital, a police spokesperson told reporters.





He said eyewitnesses told police that the rope which was tied to Nalini snapped as she was coming out of the window of the third floor and she fell down on the hard pavement.

The spokesperson said it appeared there was no safety net leading to the tragedy.

He said probe has been ordered and a case of negligence against fire department officials will be registered.

    It is unfortunate that Nalini a factory worker fell from the third floor of the building during a mock fire drill. May her soul rest in peace and give comfort and solace to the bereaved family and and friends. Nalini's next of kin should be compensated fully for her life lost.

    Strange & so funny. A mock drill is conducted to educate the employees on how to avert injury or loss of life during real incidents. If mock drills starts taking lives, then what could be the outcome of a real incident in such places??? Pity the one who ordered this command of rope rescue without adequate safety measures and appropriate safety Gears. Sounds a freaky incident. No Safety Personal can conduct such a mock drill in such a foolish manner.

    Mr Deepak of bangalore,Fire drill must be conducted in close cordination with fire department.Which company is doing fire drills without fire department is violation under "OHSAS" In this case its a gross nonesense done by Fire chief.

    There is no use by just registering the complaint.should dismiss and punish the concern authority or authorised persons.because the lost of life is never get back,still it should not repeat.this is only shows the negligience and lack of safety precautions.
    Mr.Ted Mangalore coments,contains the some important matter that,which the safety precautions are very poor in our india.,if it is comparing with gulf countries and others.

    Fire Drills are to save lives and not to take life. We conduct such drills in Gulf regularly and everyone is required to take emergency stairs (which are totally enclosed and has a steel (fire rated) door rather than the elevator or open stairs.
    This excerise of jumping from third floor without any established safety procedure is totally unheard of.
    There is something called rescue drill where in trainer fire professionals are using access ladders to reach the place (in this case third floor window) and then rescue the trapped person (generally a life size model figurine) and this too is applicable for hospitals, hotels and similar places not for factories.
    It is the time that we all take safety drills seriously.

    This is not a fire drill, this is death drill. First thing they follow the wrong practice.Even they want to use rope then they must use dummy to test the rope. I pretty sure no action will be taken on any one. And i heard the comment from one of officer, he was saying brand new rope can break. Put him down from 10th floor on the same rope.

    What training background has our fire dept have in safety? For all you know, many of these fire dept. fellows are just a bunch of helmet-wearing, paan-eating, ex-coconut tree climbers. And just because they can jump upwards from ground floor to tenth floor (like Spiderman), they expect all people to atleast jump downwards from minimum 10th floor without any safety harness. Ignorance and a callous attitude towards safety is the culture in India.

    Ted, I agree with you. But I myself have undergone training from the Fire Services Department in Bangalore. They never instructed jumping out of the building or using a rope as a safety measure. Instead, they told us to use the staircase. It is understood that such act of jumping is only performed by persons who are "panicked" during fire incidents/accidents since smoke spreads and makes it invisible to locate the escape route.Surprisingly, the fire department itself has carried out this drill contradicting their own teachings.On one hand the initiative to carry out a mock drill for creating awareness among employees is commendable. But, this type of accidents really needs to put a check on as to how much of detailing has to be done during the preparation for the same. The prick of a small pin is enough to burst a colorful balloon.

    This is the mockary of mack drill. This shows the casual attitude by safety department. They are still in the age old practice where they never accept common sence. As we Indians are never safety concious. The way we work on high rise building, specially the workers only God is saving us.

    The Fire Department had the experience of one of the Recent Fire accident in Bengaluru in which those who had come out through the windows were saved and hence probably they went for this Rope walk fire drill and then what is the solution
    1.Fire Drills should be conducted regularly but with full precautions and expertise .Coming down from 3rd Floor through the window is not a Bad Idea if Smoke is the main problem .Smoke Kills just like the AMRI Hospital fire tragedy .
    2.There are specialised equipments like Safety net sroll Down basket .In which there is no need of Rope crawl.You have to just jump inside the upper end of the Basket you will safely scroll down to the ground floor .One such net basket is available with a Company called Viking ( website is viking-life.com).I myslef have scrolled down through it in a fire drill from more than 3rd floor height without injury Safely
    4.In India Fire Department should start giving subcontract to certified Private companies who have real expertise to conduct Fire Drills regularly
    5.Another Idea is evert Factory should have smoke Hoods for every person to use in case of Smoke
    If all these are implemented we can really save Life
    But for now Just Pray for the peace of Departed soul

    Never heard of a fire drill of this kind. I agree with Ted completely regarding fire drill. In a fire drill you are supposed to walk down the stairs and not take the elevator. A person who knows more and who has been trained leads other people during the mock drill. No one is supposed to jump or stand on a window. Craziest thing ever. This is like killing her. No fault of that girl. Indian authorities have to get trained in safety from developed countries and then these authorities have to train the people around them. PATHETIC!

    Rightly said Ted. Being in Marine industry, I have attended fires drills in UK, USA and HongKong. Never put any civilian, participet, employee's life in danger.

    Mock drills are conduct to creat awarness to familiraise people how to act during emergency stituation, Not to use lifts, Use emergency exists only, Reach to the spaecified emergency station\muster station.

    FIRST THERE SHOULD BE TRAINING FOR SENIOR OFFICIALS INCHARGE OF CONDUCTING THESE MOCK DRILLS UNDERSTAND MEANING OF MOCK DRILL.

    A precious life is lost due to negligiance.

    Jangly people teaching mock drill worst than natural desaster!

    Jumping from the window by the help of window is only for VIP rescue from mock capture beter they learn ever than too late.

    Over the past 15 years of my professional career in Dubai and London, i have been to well over 100 fire drills and i have never been in a situation where i had to jump out of the window through a Rope. This is one of the Craziest Fire Drills which i have ever heard in my Life.
    The whole India is talking about the safety net which was missing at the mock drill. If an amateur is told to jump from a 03rd floor with a rope and even a safety net in place there is a 99% likelihood of him/her succumbing to death or breaking his bones. An amateur is not supposed to jump, In fact no one is supposed to jump in a fire drill, you slowly walk down the staircase, and this is supposed to be a fire drill not a shooting for a Spiderman Sequel. This incident is a direct consequence of Indians watching too many Nonsense Bollywood & Rajni Movies.

    I work @ Emaar Corporate Suites, Burj Khalifa, Dubai in the 154th Floor. In the fire drills done so far, the Dubai fire department never told us to jump from the 154th floor with a Rope and a safety net on the ground. No amateur can jump from 154th floor or 03rd floor. Only Spiderman can. Why don’t Indians use their Brains, poor girl ended up losing her life because of Bangalore Fire Department.

    First of my heartfelt condolences to the family of the victim.May be it is a genuine negligence of the Fire Dept which cannot be ruled out coz such kind of incidents can happen like a country like India where there is no value for the life of a common man.On the contrary whether these kind of incidents happens only in states which are not in the 'GOOD BOOKS' of the Central Govt??? this is a question to be answered and given a thought.Frankly speaking I was a born supporter of Congress.But now after learning about the corruption that has taken place during the recent years I'm dead against of it.Coming back to the incident now money can buy anybody.A Fire Dept personnel who is drawing hardly 5000 or 6000p/month if bribed in Crores to commit such negligence by the people who want to bring bad image to the law & order of the state WHY NOT he will do the things which is required by the people asked to do??? why i'm saying this is now a days all these kind of incidents are reported from the states like W/Bengal,karnataka,Gujrat etc.may be next incident from Orissa(coz Navin Patnaik who raised voice against Home Minister).Why not incidents are not reported from Maharashtra/Delhi??? This is only to divert the minds of the people.I really feel this is the high time to view the things in microscope and take decision.Gentlemen dont get carried away - but think twice and decide.

    I can't believe such an ignorance by a COMPETENT authorities. In India safety is considered last not SAFETY FIRST. Shame on fire personenls , how can they do this exercise without providing operational control ie safety bed . They must have used " KATTAW" instead of certified safety sling .Another sad thing is she got engaged & marriage scheduled next month .......very sad hope her soul RIP

    Most people here are commenting against Fire Department which is wrong. Companies conduct Mock Fire drills on their own and normally Fire department is not involved in any way. The company's safety officer and company itself is responsible for this and they should pay compensation.

    Now pls someone tell me that the rope procured by fire dept was of sub standard quality and there is another scam that a govt official is involved in that has made a poor bread winner "volunteer" pay by her life. Isnt it time we the people started taking issues in our own hands and pushing these govt officials out of the 10th floor ourselves. Why does an innocent person have to pay with her life???? Do we not need an uprising like the arabs in our lands to punish those who suck innocent blood??
