Thiruvananthapuram: Assets Worth Rs 700 Crore Found in Temple’s Secret Rooms

Daijiworld Media Network – Thiruvananthapuram (SP)

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 30: Six cellars of the local Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple, which is being run by a trust of the royal family that had ruled Travancore in the past, are being opened one by one, as per a recent Supreme Court order. The Supreme Court had ordered for opening of these cellars and make a list of items found thereon, while hearing a private complaint. These cellars, which have traditionally remained off limits for anyone, are located underground. The officials completed the task of opening three rooms and listing out the assets and valuables found in these rooms on Tuesday night.

Lord Anantha Padmanabha Swamy continues to be the family deity of Travancore royal lineage, and the members of the royal family continue to pay obeisance to the Lord through special entrance in the temple every morning and evening. A giant idol of Lord Vishnu, found resting on a thousand-hooded Lord Anantha in the form of serpent god, is the unique feature of this temple. The idol is so big that it can only be seen through three different doors provided at the sanctum sanctorum to enable the devotees to have the darshan of the Lord. The temple happens to be not only a pilgrimage centre, but also a tourist destination because of the grand art and architecture found in the temple.

The value of invaluable gold ornaments, utensils, pearls, jewels, bejewelled crowns, golden equipments used for the festivals of the presiding deity, items having tremendous antique value etc., which were recovered from these three rooms, has been put at around Rs 700 crore, sources in the temple said.

This grand temple was built by king of Travancore dynasty, Martananda Verma, in 18th century. In the recent past, the Supreme Court had appointed a seven-member committee which includes two retired judges of Kerala High Court, to open the secret cellars located underground, and list out the invaluable items stored in them. The private complaint had sought more transparency and trustworthiness in the temple administration.

The committee members clarified that their duty is just to list out the items found inside these cellars, and that assessing their value does not come under their purview. However, the temple governing council members put the estimated worth of valuables so far found, at Rs 700 crore.  At the same time, scholars having knowledge of archaeology and history have opined that it would be wrong to assess the worth of the valuables without taking into account their antique value.

As that money was found in temple, it think it has to be used for development of that temple. Cos this wealth was meant to go to temple that’s the reason why it was saved in that temple. Or use that money to build and maintain more temples in Kerala. Do not let it go towards these hungry politicians.
And @Valson this money should and will be used for welfare of temples. And distributing money to Indians should be done by recovering black money from our corrupted politicians. Let’s not make Indians lazy by just distributing money , let’s create opportunities to Indians and lets all work hard and make money. Let us think about recovering illegal black money and use it to create opportunities in India for all the Indians.

@Maria (Your question was why Super Rich Indian God/Goddess cannot save our poor indian ladies commiting suicide) Poor Indians are commiting suicides just beacuse personel and financial problems.. the root cause of these problems are our society and us do not blame it on a Rich india God / Jesus or Allah. If you really have some humanity do soemthing for our soceity.

The liquid cash can be deposited in Banks and interest may be used for charitable purposes. The antiques shall be preserved in a museum inside the premises. The Gold and silver articles can be made use for the special occassions in the same form or the same can be remade to suit the needs of the diety. In any case the entire wealth is to be with the deity without any Goverment interference and should be maticulouly used for creation of fecilities to the devotees who visit the temple by constructing suitable accomodation and for decent maintainance of the premises. The Royal family who are responsible for preserving the Treasure so far should be given due respect and given a say in the usage of the treasure for the benifit of the devotees.

A temple's wealth means the wealth of the brahmanas. According to the codes of dharma brahmana's have 6 duties: to perform yajna for their own benefit and the benefit of others, to study and to teach, and to live by accepting gifts and giving in charity to others whenever there is excess wherever there is need.

A lot of people already have this wealth spent, but why after having preserved it for 1000s of years, should it now be entire depleted? The temple has to continue on indefinitely into the future and that is the corpus of funds for ensuring that.

What would constitute responsible fiscal policy in this case?

First of all, we need to establish the intent under which this money was given, or the social contract that has always existed in India under the rule of varnashrama-dharma. That was simply stated, "para-upakar", or doing good works (upakar) for the spiritual good and material welfare of others (para), with the basic aim of "Om Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu" that everyone should be happy. How? By power sharing and profit sharing. The ancient Vedic society was a happy, enlightened and prosperous one due to having implemented these root ideologies that counter the extremist ideologies of the West (ie. Communism, Capitalism, Socialism, Fascism, Totalitarianism, Anarchy, Monarchy and Democracy). Vedic culture was none of these 8, yet had elements of all of these 8 ideologies in proper balance with God in the center. Every social segment got their quota of "happy".

If a small princely state like Kerala had 1,20,000 Crore worth of stuff in a single temple, just imagine what the mighty state of Hyderabad, Mysore, Maratha, Gwalior, Punjab, Delhi, Calcutta, Rajasthan, Kashmir could hold. I have kept Pakistan out of the equations a bit on purpose as the richest parts of Pakistan were part of Punjab and the not so rich parts did have their tini-wini rules. Sorry if I missed out on a few others, but just the thought of the wealth that is (hopefully) hidden or (unfortunately) removed from India by the outgoing British is mind boggling.

And we could blame a lot of people for all this inviting them over. One thing I can say for sure if if they had not come, we may never be the India was are today. We would still be fighting among ourselves, much like the way we do on this blog.

What is a bit surprising for me is how less do the less educated people who spew vitriol know about their neighbor. I can't blame them for it, but sure there is someone out there who is brainwashing them.

I sure know a few things about Kerala for sure and it's history. And for those of you who are interested, read a bit of it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syrian_Malabar_Nasrani.

And about everything else, I guess it would be an enjoyable if we keep off the bad language and reference to foreign folks. If we have problems, we need to sort it out ourselves. Let's not get the world to focus on ourselves with evil eyes.

Church attacks in 2008 again the reminder of painful memories which the Christian community will never and ever forget it as it was pre planned strategy .

When the holy places like temples have been used as a patronage of one particular political party, then other opposite political party which comes to power will automatically go in a tune which will be quite different.
So who is the cause? Let the temple come out and say we are for all Hindus of the World and have no affiliation to any political party, entity, organization but only to Hindus. Then this type of malice will not happen. Now tell us, who have invited problem? Enemy within are more dangerous than from outside and treating all Hindus equal will not give rise to issues.

Temples, as well as churches and mosques, have been repositories of wealth in the past when rulers (the temple was managed by the ruling family in this case) as well as commoners contributed as per their faith and capacity. This is all for those comment about temple's money: Only from temple the govt collects money (endowment is applicable only for temples not for mosques or churches). So please be careful while commenting temple money.

The devotees offer money to temple for the wellness of Hindu society. But the govt in turn will use the fund for xyz reason. If any hindu protest on that, he will become communal. This is what is happening in INDIA!!

More surprises every day. All religious followers need a place of worship but if the places of worship and the abode of the religious leaders were turned like a storehouses of gold-jewels-cars-currency in bales, then it is not considered as a religious place but a business center.

Politicians and big business people donate crores worth of donations to their religious places to keep
them safe from falling apart. On the other hand, millions of helpless people are donating money to have some miracles in their lifestyle of poverty. So, the religious places are getting very rich and hide the excessive wealth in secret.

If the Temple wealth of 700 crore of more is wisely used, it might have created greater relief to a lot of
people in their hunger-sickness and dilapidated situations. Based on the recent reports, some well known religious places have more money in underground than the  bank headquarters of the various
    banks in India.

I hope that the recent events may open the eyes of the average donor to think twice before throwing away their hard-earned money. Personally speaking, I used to donate money to some visiting
missionaries from India, but when I saw their higher standard of living among the poor believers, I
immediately stopped donating money. Investigate before investing money even if it is a religious place
    or religious person!

Sorry Dude.. I shall not understand your national averages which is for politicians to understand. As I can see what I see around me and gone through I can surely say we are not doing what we must instead complain a lot. I was a farmers son who had just 2 acres of land and we were 5 children and we studied in Adve school and now we are not the same as what we were 10yrs back. I worked in a Hotel as a server and today I have my own small busines tat takes care of me.

I can tell keeping my head high I was never helped by anybody's wealth and I did not expect one. I married out of my wish and had a son at the age of 24 then my salary was Rs2300/- Now, I have my own roof over my head and no one helped me. I am not a engineer or a a doctor..I worked hard and here I am today who can proudly say I am no more poor, not a backward but a honest law abiding , tax paying citizen of India. It is simple poistive attitude which we must develop and hold our self esteem high and there is no reason why a small salaried person working for Rs.10000/- per cannot built a house. It may take long for him..if not him his children may built a house of him but for that, we need to built a strong character, work hard when we can and plan with what we have. This is not a rocket science .. we can complain all our life about somebody.

Oh. yaa.. God does not need money but a temple needs. with your knowledge I think you know the difference between weath and earnings.

The view of the temple and the lake is truly a feast to the eyes. May be for this reason, the ad goes "God's Own country". It makes sense to me.

Considering the long/rich history, valuation of Rs.700 crores is too meagre. I fail to understand why readers are so upset about it.

More than its intrensic value, it fetches the antique value which is a great an invaluable asset for the nation. We need to preserve it as a national pride.

There is no point in giving negative comments about it. Now-a-days, 1 crore has a very low value, thanks to the inflation caused by wrong policies of our rulers.

Yes, it is not a bad idea to open the closed doors of national monuments like Taj Mahal and find the treasure of antiques and make it known to the public and transparent.

Religion is transactional in India. Indians give God cash and anticipate an out-of-turn reward.  Such a plea acknowledges that favours are needed for the undeserving.

In the world outside the temple walls, such a transaction is named- “bribe”.

A wealthy Indian gives not cash to temples, but gold crowns and such baubles.

His gifts can not feed the poor. His pay-off is for God.  He thinks it will be wasted if it goes to a needy man.

In June 2009, The Hindu published a report of Karnataka minister G. Janardhan Reddy gifting a crown of gold and diamonds worth Rs 45 crore to Tirupati.

India’s temples collect so much that they don't know what to do with it.  Billions are gathering dust in temple vaults.

When Europeans came to India they built schools.  When Indians go to Europe & USA, they build temples.

Sunil.. Indians are poor because 3/4 of Indian do not want to work. They want god to help them or some party to give them grinder, electricity, cow, pig etc.we shall expect everything free from eryone but don't ask us to work.unless we indians cultivate a habit for work to live and pay to use,we shall be poor even after 10,000 years.

Now we have no reason to be poor.in villages the minimum salary for farm worker is Rs250/day plus break-fast and lunch,Salaries in factories are minimum Rs7000/- plus perks and so on it goes up as you grow up. with Rs. 150/day any family (2 2 and not 2 countless) can have 3 square meals without doubt and send their children to school (may be govt. school).

There are very good scheme of insurance from govt as well as pvt which can take care of health (for genuine illness),the BPL card takes care of their grociers to some extent. Well, these figures are no comparison with corporate earnings.. but, it is sufficient to say we are not poor & we are content. if we want to built a palace we must make a begining.. but we Indians do not want to crawl.. we expect spoon feeding even at our prime age.

We should be ashamed to value the Temple asset which is kept safely for 100s of years by our ancestor, it is Temple's property and so it be and it was donated by people who worked hard and not by lazy pigs so we cannot claim that and say Temples are Rich and Indians are poor.. lets stop calling us poor. Only Indians like to be called backward and poor and it is pity

Does God demand for gold or valuables for him? Never! All these assets are hidden by the trustees to convert their black money into white. If this Rs.700 crore worth of valuables are utilized for the underprivileged and the poor in our country, the term BPL (Below Poverty Line) can be eradicated. India can also prove that we are a truly growing economy to the world. This Rs.700 crore valuables d will only increase the interest of the politicians, government officials and so on so forth...people who are hungry for acquiring the money! Our age old epics speaks about Dharma and we were all taught while we were growing, thru' religious preachings, from parents and guru's. But where are we helpful to fellow humans? The Bhagawat Gita says “You see God in fellow human beings, love, bhakti and by helping the needy”. If this money is utilized for the wellbeing of the poor, then definitely Lord Anantha Padmanabha Swamy would be very happy & shower his blessings to one and all.
