Does the Hand that Rock the Cradle Truly Rule the World?

May 8, 2017

Someone once said "the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world". I ask each of you today if this is indeed true. In my simple mind this is nothing but an untruth. If this was indeed true, why would there be female infanticide in so many developing nations of the world? Even today the birth of a girl child is a social stigma and a burden. This is because the parents have to provide for her auction, where not only is she sold like a commodity in marriage, they have to even pay the price!<

Is it then any wonder that this beautiful creature of God, a woman, who, mind you, is revered as Goddess Lakshmi, Saraswati, Tulsi, Durga by our Hindu brethren or Mary - Mother of God; why is almost never given credit for the wealth of knowledge, beauty, strength, courage or wisdom in reality? She is brought up in the belief that she has no identity of her own but only that of a daughter, wife, daughter-in-law, or mother. Nothing wrong in any of these roles, but is that really her? Is it any wonder then she becomes an unpaid servant and sex provider in her husband's home! It is according to me precisely the commoditization of a woman that makes her a soft and easy target when people want to vent out their anger and frustration. She gets raped, beaten and abused be it mentally, physically or emotionally and becomes a broken soul! Mind you this abuse is not only restricted to the poor or developing countries. Even the well-heeled class and the developed countries have cases like these by the dozen.

If you thought this was something that could be ascribed to the personal life of a woman, then think again. Many a time her educational qualifications, nor ability at excelling at her work, in addition to juggling a personal life are worth nothing. She has to perform in more than one way to secure employment or even climb up the corporate ladder. This holds true from the lowly maid, to the gorgeous flight attendant, the multi-talented doctor, the highly paid actor, the corporate high-flyer and every one in between!

We talk of empowerment of woman, but are we truly empowering them? Change can start with one’s self. We as women need to stand up for each other and believe in our capability. More importantly we need to bring about change by teaching our sons as Bryan Adams once sang Tell Me Have You Really Loved a Woman - to love and respect the women in our lives. Only then will dawn the day, when the hand that rocks the cradle will truly be able to rule the world!

Yes the woman that rocks the cradle does indeed rule the world, that is if she understands and plays her role of a mother; remember even kings are borne by their mothers!

And about female infanticide again a woman does play a key role in exposing her womb for such heinous murder.
