Paul Valthaty - India's New Hope for Genuine All-rounder?

Hyderabad, Apr 16: Everything is going right for Paul Valthaty, a little known 27-year-old Mumbai cricketer, who is fast emerging as the long-sought solution for the genuine all-rounder's spot in the Indian cricket team.

Though one cannot brand this young cricketer as India's future star based on just the two matches he has played, it may be safely assumed that, given his cricketing skills and body language, he is sure to make it big very soon.

On Saturday April 16, he bowled with a magical arm against Deccan Chargers in the ongoing IPL 4, bagging four valuable wickets.

And then when he came on to bat, the sense of huge expectations from his fans among the crowd was palpable, and he did not disappoint them. Blasting fours and sixes all over the ground, one after the other, he came up with a blistering knock of 75 runs in just 47 balls!

Needless to add, he bagged the man of the match award for a second consecutive time. The fact the two stunning back-to-back performances came against the former and the defending champions of IPL, Deccan Chargers and Chennai Super Kings, makes the feat even more commendable.

Valthaty, who had featured in just 12 Twenty20 matches, came to bowl at a time when the Chargers were looking to accelerate the scoring with Shikhar Dhawan and skipper Kumar Sangakkara going great guns. He got Dhawan to lob one to Sunny Singh and returned to remove Bharat Chipli and a dangerous Daniel Christian.

Amit Mishra became his fourth and final victim when he tried to scoop Valthaty over the wicket keeper only to have his stumps left shattered. The ability to come to the fore when required defined Valthaty as it did against the Chennai Super Kings earlier.

Valthaty had raced to 120 not out in 63 balls against Chennai as the Kings XI Punjab chased down the 189-run target with six wickets and five balls to spare. It was the first hundred of this IPL season and 13th overall.

For those who are not familiar with Valthaty, he had a nondescript career till this knock, since making his way up the levels of age group cricket in Mumbai during the late 1990s.

He made it to India's Under-19 World Cup in 2002 with the likes of Irfan Pathan and Parthiv Patel. But after that an eye injury while playing in New Zealand almost jeopardised Valthaty's career, keeping him out of cricket two-three years before he was picked up by Rajasthan.

Kings XI coach Michael Bevan had heaped praise on the youngster for his sterling display after the match at Mohali.

"He (Valthaty) played a high quality knock, an amazing knock. We really needed such a knock. His placement, power was terrific. He is a talented batsman, who strikes the ball beautifully," Bevan said.

He had added that Valthaty was a quiet character and reserved person, who likes to keep to himself, but was a good human being.

I have written some positive comments about Paul Chandrashekar Valthaty. But some people made me to write again..but not about Valthaty, but about Sachin. Please understand Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar if you don't know or if you forgot his sacred service to Indian cricket for 20 years.
1.Debut Test match when he was 17years,against Strong Pakistan in Pakistan soil.He was hit on the forehead by Waqar's bouncer. He didn't do much in the test. But he hit 4 sixes off Abdul Qadir's one over in ODI. Pak paper's headline next day..STAR IS BORN !
2.80 years old woman from Christchurch met Sachin and said " I want you to hit 100 and KIWIS winning the match. Sachin hit a superb 85 against Richard Headly & co.Somehow we managed to save match. Sachin's first hundred came against at LORDS on 15TH August. He saved Indians from British and gave us Freedom! He faced Richard Headly,Akram,Waqar,Ambrose,Walsh,Abdul Qadir,Imran Khan,Ian Botham,Donald,Pollok,Steyn,Akthar,Muralidharan,Chaminda Vas,Mcgrath,Warne....List is endless. Please give him a standing ovation. If you don't give ,no problem..just go to Stadium and watch standing ovation when Schin comes out to bat .Fans are almost in semi unconscious stage. They just forgot where they are. Thats why Sachin is called GOD OF CRICKET !!

Mumbai little Master Paul Chandrashekar Valthaty will be the best all rounder of our team in coming days. Sachin will not play in coming one day series in West indies Tour he will give some excuse and will skip that tour. Jai ho Sachin.

At 27 years Paul Valthaty has not played a single first class match and has played only one list A match that too in 2006.Based on his performance in the last 2 matches of IPL and calling him India's New Hope for Genuine All-rounder is tad too early. Let him play first class matches for a couple of years and then it will be clear. The same thing happened with Karnataka's A Mithun who was hailed as next big thing in Indian Cricket and just look where is he now !!!

Paul Valthaty is a good prospect. Let's not forget Ambati Rayudu the former under19 captain who has been the strength of Mumbai team so far. A great Wicket-keeper and can bat as per the situation accelerating even against the best bowling. It's a mystery why his name doesn't appear in the Indian Team selection.

Paul's knock in the IPL is indeed commendable - but his overall technique still needs a some polish (which I suppose he will acquire if he plays more international matches). He plays some very good shots but also slips here and there which is not good. But then, It could also be because of T20 (where the scoring rate is very high).

I would definitely like to see Paul in ODIs and Test Cricket and watch his style then.
I hope he gets a chance to prove his mettle.

Paul Valthaty..From BLINDESS to BRIGHTNESS ! Unbelivable performance from a cricketer who got his eye injured and operated when playing for India under 19 team. He was out from cricket for 3 years because of that serious eye injury. Now he is 27 years old and seeing the cricket ball like foot ball. He stunned his captain & partner Gilcrist by hitting world class bowlers all over the park. His century against Chennai was criticised as a fluke by jealous people, but he continued that fluke again against Deccan Chargers.Cricket fans sure that he will continue that fluke forever.Hats off young man.You are 27 years old..still not too late.Indian team need cricketer like you. Misbaha ul Haq from Pak and Miche Hussey from Australia got a chance to represent their country at the age of 29. Hope you will fill the vacuum when Legend Tendulkar retires from Intl Cricket. Will you ..?

It's become a trend and a favourite pass time with Sachin's detractors to go on a fault-finding spree with every little thing he does. When Yuvi and then Sehwag got out for naughts in the crucial World Cup knock out games no one raised a finger, but Sachin's century was cited as the 'reason' for India's loss to South Africa. Looks like our country is taking superstition to new heights, because despite statistics proving otherwise, his critics want to adamantly pursue the belief that when he scores century India loses. The rest of the players are never blamed for not giving him support. As to his so-called 'selfishness' which player's strike rate doesn't slow down when he is in the 90s? For those who have forgotten, just recently he scored his 47th ODI ton with a boundary against England. And its a known fact that Sachin plays every ball according to its merit, notwithstanding his own score. If any other player had hit the last ball for a single, would we be so critical about it? Munaf Patel had not grounded his bat properly in the India-Eng tie, and the one run proved crucial for us. If Sachin had done that there would have been a nation-wide protest!! It's idiotic to even compare Sachin with a Valathy or any other cricketer for that matter. Cricket is not just about hitting fours and sixes - there is lot more to it and only those who understand the game will appreciate this fact.

Shashee, Bahrain, well said, Paul Valthaty is a match winner. Whenever Sachin plays, the team will loose the match. Any way Sachin is darling of every kid in India, for his personal records. This Guy will play for the country and not for his own records, Records can be broken but wins are permanents. Paul Valthaty will be the next best all rounder of India. 4/49 and 75 good performance in last match. I am afraid Dhoni will give him a chance. Like a Lion, Dhoni always kills male cubs. So that there may not be competitors in future.

Hats off to Paul Valthaty what a batting? He led the team like captain, as if he is playing in international team since last 20yrs. So much confidence, I wanted to know him and wanted to watch his game, I missed it when he scored century against Chennai super kings. He was responsible in beating Indian captain Dhoni’s team. He has given a hint to Indian captain to consider him in Indian team. I heard that he was playing for less than 18 team in the past. He is a match winner leading from front. God bless him. Some years back While I was watching a match may be it was India A versus India B. But it was between Indians. I noticed a batsman whom nobody knew. at that moment I thought he would be something in the history of cricket and today he is a cricket icon none other than Dhoni. The other day I was trying to find out who this Paul Valthaty. I saw him playing for Rajsthan Royals as an opener poor guy was out without scoring. Then I thought may be close relative of the sponsors. Now I think he is going to be another Dhoni. I wish him all the best. God Bless you.

Don't count your chickens before they hatch. In the last 2 decades since I have been following Indian cricket, I think at least 10 Pauls have come promising immense but delivering nothing. Why can't the media allow these young turks to play their cricket? We did this with Ajit Agarkar, Irfan Pathan and these days even with Yuvi and Yusuf. Is anyone of them a true all-rounder? Agarkar and Pathan have even become rarity at the domestic level.

Yuvi despite being in the team for almost a decade has failed to prove his mettle at the test level. We have had Ravindra Jadeja, the blue-eyed boy of Dhoni. He failed miserably. Paul Valtathy has just played 2 substantial knocks and one spell of bowling that too at 110 kmh...that to 20-20, the single number lottery of cricket. Those who call him genuine all-rounder must be crazy. After Kapil, the only genuine all-rounder we had was Robin Singh. But he made a late entry and then early exit. We don't want flash in the pan innings but consistent in the mode of Kallis, Vettori, Shakib, Angelo Mathews, Shane Watson, Flintoff etc.

It's not about having talent but having temperament and itching hunger to excel through hardwork and single-minded dedication. These youngsters will be offered a whopping price in the next edition and by the end of the season, they are done and dusted like Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma, Murali Vijay etc. Do we want an all-rounder for one season or one entire decade? Why burden and spoil the young man?
