Mangaluru: Tin, fibre sheets on rooftops of multi-storeyed buildings turning fatal

Mangaluru, May 8: Sheets made of tin or fibre have been installed on the rooftop of multi-storeyed apartments and commercial buildings for some years now. This is life threatening. Two incidents have occurred in the last two months because of these sheets.

In the first incident, assistant professor of NITK Manish Kumar fell from the fifth floor of his building on March 4 and got injured seriously. He is under treatment at a private hospital in the city. He was correcting the antenna standing on the fibre sheet on the fifth floor.

In the second incident, student Pranav S Mundas (18) fell from the tin sheet that was fixed on the fourth floor of the hostel building when he went to fetch the cricket ball. The ball went and sat on the fibre sheet when he was playing cricket with his classmates.

Fibre sheets are placed in between tin sheets for light to enter. When a person walks on the tin sheet he is unaware that there is a fibre sheet in between and crashes down. Antenna and dish are installed mostly in the apartment buildings on these sheets and there is no protection at all. During the rainy season it is even more dangerous as it slips.

Safety should be given priority while fixing sheets on top of multi-storeyed buildings. It is dangerous to install antennas, dishes and water tanks on these sheets. So the public needs to be careful in order to avert any injury or fatalities.

    First of all the sheets are not meant be climbed upon. Unless required contact the professional. Adding to this, we have already evolved from monkey , don't know what makes people to go back doing monkey business .

    Not only this, there is hardly any safety measures followed in multistoried buildings, apartments, student hostels across the city. Its all about ready money. If nothing is happening is by luck, thats all.

    These sheets are there for providing shade or for protection from rain. Who permitted the victims to do circus on them ?? You can't blame a building system for people's negligence. When a structure such as tin/fibre roof is fixed, people expert in similar profession should be asked for help, not any Tom/Dick/Harry climbs up to help himself. Well, if such roof gets blown away and injured passers-by or damaged property, I agree. But what is detailed here is absolutely at the person's risk, not the system.

    As far as safety protocol is concerned- India lags far behind. Here there is no concept of proper safety gear eg. hard hats, safety anti skid shoes, safety harness etc. for workers. As for the regulatory authorities, their inspection of SOP’s or Safety Regulations is cursory - once money or favours change hands, nothing remains. It’s scary entering buildings, no fire protection in most. Tin sheets over roofs is one aspect, are these fixed properly ..??? Imagine these sheets being blown off in strong gusty winds, we had a hoarding fall of twice in a week near the Town Hall, fortunately the almighty in all his mercy ensures the human tragedy is reduced . We need to lear a lot from developed nations before projecting ourselves as Vishwa Gurus. Mere utterances aren’t enough, tough measures required at all levels.

    corruption everywhere...builders want to cheat the buyers..they put third class quality of cement, sand, tiles etc to the structure...look around land of monkeys..any building that is five years old looks so shabby inside and outside...no one is bothered about the safety of others...this is common in third world countries reeking with scams and corruption..

    In every appartment after installing the sheets on the building top, they must inform to MCC and get clearance certificate after inspection. . Because it's not mentioned in the original plan while applying for building permission. Fatal incident can be avoide.

    Now when you come to know how dangerous they are try to remove them and replace them before another life goes.Better late than never.Second these sheets will make heat more than other roofs .Would be adviceable to replace them.My question is ,when one building is erected not some rules only so one or other roof should be done to avoid any risks ?Can everyone do as they want?

    People walking over tun sheets do not taje precaution, then putting the tin sheets or fibre sheets is not at fault. For safety, the person should wear a safety harness and hook it when going on rooftops or high places. In Undia no; ne follows safety procedures... plaxes
