Mangaluru: Mobile usage, jumping signal main causes for rising accidents in city

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Apr 23: Accidents are increasing in the city, which is becoming more and more congested day by day. Most of the accidents are caused due to jumping of signals and using mobile phones while driving.

Under the limits of the city commissionerate, cases of driving or riding the vehicle through the red signal is rampant. This is more prevalent in signals at Hampankatta and PVS junction.

It is learnt that the collision between bike and bus, in which the bus was gutted, that occurred on April 8, occurred as the bus driver had jumped the red signal.

On Friday, April 8, at 2.23 pm in the signal at Hampankatta, a red signal was on for vehicles arriving from Jyoti Circle. Green signal was on for vehicles arriving from K S Rao Road and proceeding towards Falnir. However, the bus driver drove the vehicle when the red signal was on and hit the bike. The collision caused fire in the bus. Fortunately the bike rider escaped unhurt.

ACP traffic Nataraj says that vehicle drivers have to observe signals properly and should not invite danger for a minute or two of waiting time.

Usage of mobile phones while waiting for signals or while moving is also increasing in the city. The traffic police have to take strict action on this issue.

In city limits vehicles should not be driven above the speed limit of 20 to 30 km per hour. However, it is seen that many vehicle drivers drive at high speed. Traffic police are not showing any interest in curbing such violation of rule. Public are saying that traffic police are only busy checking vehicles for the wearing of helmets, emission test certificates, licences and RC of vehicles.

Above sentence is partially true.. they are other factors that are being ignored by who ever has issued the above statement. People are in rage because it is driver of a "BMW" that caused the accident. Yes it is totally reckless driving that caused the accident but let's not forget other accident cases. there should be a cases study on every accident by police and they have to determine what caused the accident and also solution to overcome which things in future..

According to records, Mangloreians are well education and behave nicely. But why this problem in Mangalore??? My suggestion is near every signal lights install Railway crossings type closures poll. When Red light means, automatically the the poll will come down, and when green lights the poll will go up for vehicles to go. I think otherwise no solution for this problem. Can control signal jumpers. 😀

Driving license should be able to accumulate good points and bad points like in some western countries. Revoking licenses of bad drivers should be seriously considered. Idea of driving a vehicle today in India is pathetic. Side mirrors are more for decoration and people never even look at it. Concept of responsibility of free flowing traffic is with the driver themselves is totally missing. Use of technology to put people on correct driving practices should be considered.

Most of the accident occur due to overspeeding in City limits. Some students ride their two wheelers with overspeed that too without wearing helmets and sometimes talking over phone. Most of the bus car drivers also talk over over phone and drive vehicles carelessly. Road is not the place to talk on phones disrupting the movement of other vehicles. Let them stop the vehicle and talk. Further the pedestrians who talk on mobiles while crossing busy roads, junctions etc are the main culprits. Traffic police are required to curb all these illegal activities. I appreciate the Police who were assigned to checking the documents at Kankanady byepass doing great job by booking cases against those who violate traffic rules besides verifying the documents. No separate police group is required for booking other cases.

Main cause is traffic and overtaking. Make 2 lane roads at least. India has so many different types of vehicles. Some move like ants, others like cheetah.

I totally disagreed with the assessment of the traffic police, it’s nothing but a blame game, you Traffic Police are there to enforce the law, being here in Mangalore / KARNATAKA- all I’ve observed is a bunch of Traffic policemen sitting / focused on their mobiles - the only time they get active is to catch hold of some 2 wheeler rider not wearing a mask - a couple of minutes of pleading by the guilty - a couple of currency notes passed to the man in Khakki and its back to square one ... pathetic is not the word, corruption at its peak - the public need to know the punishment given to the BMW driver whose rash driving resulted in a catastrophic accident killing and injuring people on Lalbagh road a week back. Curse of the people on the cops - standard

Unless people practice road discipline and show more patience, no rules will help much... one thing i noticed in india compared to some western countries, here people are always in hurry on road... no patience to wait even for a minute in busy roads and deviate from lane adding more traffic woes.. especially 2 wheeler, city bus and autos..

This news item must be looked at in a broad perspective by authorities and public alike. Traffic lights are the cause in the main city, yes. But, overall negligent driving in general, flouting traffic and road rules and very important here - OVER SPEEDING. The road conditions at vulnerable spots must be carefully studied, as safety is not given due priority. Authorities need to take strict action on those who do not follow laws. Goods vehicle, autos and two wheelers are often loaded with construction materials in most unsafe manner. Pedestrians walking on the side of the roads, even where traffic is sparse are very often put at grave risk, with vehicles (more prominently Bikes and Autos) over speeding at the far extremes of the wide concrete roads. Haphazard parking and vehicles moving without proper care are all causes for danger and accidents which need immediate and strict control. taking legal and penal action after people loosing life and limb is superfluous. Thanks.
