Christianity forced on man to see his new born, wife in Chitradurga

Chitradurga, (Karnataka), Jan 25 (IANS): A man has lodged a complaint against his father-in-law and other relatives for allegedly forcing to him convert to Christianity in Hosadurga police station of Chitradurga district in Karnataka, police said on Tuesday.

Marappa, a resident of Budga Jangam Colony in Aravind Nagar near Hospet, alleged that he is not being allowed to see his new born baby and his wife.

He said he was being threatened, blackmailed and assaulted by the wife's family members to get converted to Christianity.

The complaint has been lodged against Vasanthkumar, his father-in-law, Ramachandrappa, his wife's grandfather, relatives Sudhakar, Manjunath, Sankappa. The case has again sparked debate on the religious conversions in the region. Local BJP MLA Sudhakar has raised the issue in the Assembly session and later the ruling BJP brought in the Anti-conversion Bill.

In his complaint, Marappa said on July 6, 2020 while getting married, he was forced to take a dip in the holy water and declared that he is now converted to Christianity. The accused had torn and burnt Hindu Gods' photos asking him not to worship them.

The accused told him that the Hindu goddesses Sunklamma, Maramma, Durgamma are nothing but "evils" and that he would go to hell if he worshiped them.

The complainant had sent his wife Sarala during pregnancy to her parents house on December 2, 2021. Marappa mentioned in the complaint that he had come to know about the newborn baby from others.

When his brothers Doddahusseni, Sana Hussaini, Karthik, Chandru went to see the baby, the accused abused and did not allow them inside their residence, police said.

The police stated that the complainant was told that if he followed Christianity, only then he could see his newborn kid and wife and he could also take them to his house. On questioning them, his brothers were assaulted.

Marappa has demanded that the police initiate action against the accused for hurting his religious sentiments and send his wife and kid with him.

The matter has come to the notice of Hyderabad Karnataka Alemari (nomadic) Budga Jangam Jagruthi Samithi and the complainant has met the local BJP MLA Goolihatti Shekar asking for justice. The police are investigating the case.

In fact these people should spread the message of Jesus Christ ..peace harmony and love. But these fools think that if they convert people into Christianity, the message is already spread. I like Christ and Christianity, but not Christians!!

It is wrong. Please stop it. If you do conversation to any religion, does he/she know the roots of that religion? If he doesn't know the roots of the religion, what faith he must be having on that religion. Then what is the use of converting him to Christianity? Today by force they may convert him, what guarantee is there, that man will follow Christianity. STOP IT. By force, you can't convert anyone. I am a Christian and I openly condemn this act if it is true.

If anyone hates other religion and tries to convert others, such people are not reformed in spite of their new religion . they are always dangerous to the religion itself. Faith is personal not a commodity to market .

Christian leaders and Church had recently made strong representations to CM to do away with anti-conversion law since they did not see the need for one because they never indulged in conversion nor do they plan to coerce anyone to convert. This incident shows that coercion is still possible without the knowledge of Church and the Christian leaders. A law to deal with such indirect techniques is needed.

Since there is a church called "Assembly of God" at the ground floor of my apartment in Mumbai, I am able to say something on the subject. I heard, it is like "Born Again" church. I saw a pond in the church where they dip in the water when they baptize, just like St. John the Baptist did. Since their women never wear gold or cosmetic and perfume and they talk very respectfully, many Catholic and Hindu boys come forward to marry their girls. The priest there in our bldg, never forces anybody to convert, but to get married in their church, one has to become a born again Christian. When such case arises, the priest tells boy or girl to first get married in the registered office and then come with a request in writing to convert. The above man might have agreed for such conditions to get married to the girl and hence, for so long there was no complaint. Most of them have Indian names. I presume, since he is not practising new religion, wife side people might have acted so, but not the priest.

It’s not so rosy as you are mentioning. We have encountered such neo evangelist many times on our travel and I have seen these followers of new Church pushing their belief on others. They use bad words on Hindu god and in one such argument a person on the train was telling lord Subramanya is having 2 wives and according to Indian law it is illegal. There are many such incidents where the over enthusiast followers abuse other faith just to corner some gullible people into theirs . It happens a lot in Tamil Nadu and AP . It’s regular sight to see when travelling . Telling bad about another religion to join into ours is nothing but luring or forcible conversion. When it was few cases there was issue as now it is spreading all over the Society shall react.

Mr. Shetty, Yes, there is an Evangelist group who are in such activities. I have even seen them in England and other European countries and Canada. They are even telling Catholics to follow their teaching. While, I was working in Aramco, Saudi Arabia, an Indian working in Aramco, was distributing Evangelist Pamphlets. He was arrested and jailed for one Year. When he was released, he told the police and us that if he would get a chance to come to Saudi Arabia, he would again do so. Anyway, In India, whoever does something against the law, are properly dealt with.

Dear Santhan, Assemblies of god claim they are born again and fool catholics especially by making more followers for 10 percent income as tithe (old testament law). Less informed Catholics and Hindus fall prey for such. When any informed catholic talks to them , these assemblies of god put their tail between legs and run away. I am saying this because i stay in a catholic majority area, and i have great bonding with my neighbors.

Forced conversion is banned and illegal in all religions. There is law also against forced conversion and even Christians respect and follow that law. But to amend this law and pass a law on top of this law which is against one’s birth right and free will is against the constitution is illegal and should be banned. The existing law can protect any individual so there is no need for any other law by denying any right and say to that person.

This is Goolihatti Shekhar’s second episode after a flop show in the first episode?!?!?!?!?!?!?…….Unfortunately the Tahsildar and police chief who went to the site to verify his claim in the first episode brought in a negative report against Goolihatti’s claim but the Tahsildar was unceremoniously transferred for doing a honest job but for the dissatisfaction the state govt towards the Tahsildar.

Looks far fetched story. He says he was made to dip in a pond and was told he was converted!!. There are no ponds big enough for a man to dip in any church all over the world. Conversion to Christianity is a prolonged process and not dipping someone in the pond. Police should investigate this case and see who is behind this case and how much money has changed hands.

Christian basic doctrine ( Genesis) itself teaches that humans only to dominate over other creations but shouldn't dominate over other humans; Shouldn't try to control other humans. Dignity of labour and fair treatement of everyone is encouraged. There's no high or low levels in society. In the backdrop of all these virtues previlent and seen all over the world, news of forcing Christianity over other is very tragic and surprising.

All kinds of forcible conversions are to be condemned. But this case started in July 2020. He got converted or forced to convert (according to him) at the time of his marriage. Why didn’t he complain immediately when he was forced to convert one and half years back? Why did he keep quiet all these days? It shows his was a fake conversion (not forced conversion) for the sake of marriage only. I have seen many such fake conversions in the Gulf where people convert for the sake of marriage, especially if boy and girl are from different countries, some get divorced and go back to their respective countries. Such fake converts do not practically follow the religion. True conversion takes place in one’s conscience, thru understanding and voluntarily accepting the faith, not by just taking a dip in water.

8 years have passed under this govt only on these trivial issues which is not govt’s main and important agenda. All other Development and social justice issues are swept under the carpet and are getting rottened. Only these communal, religious and pseudo patriotic issues are highlightened and given utmost importance. People are fully drained out and have reached the end point of breaking down with these unrelated issues of this incompetent govt.

If it's true forceful conversion is not good for both because if a person don't know the head & tail of the religion which he going to accept what is the use? People who know the teachings nor those people who attracted from the teachings of the religion which he going to accept are only love that religion. Otherwise its like a bubbles on the water.
