Mangaluru: Customs keeping eye on inward passengers bringing iPhones

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 16: Customs officials have always been vigilant about passengers bringing gold and gold ornaments concealed in different ways. The customs officials have now begun to keep check on the iPhones being brought into the country by passengers.

Currently, men coming from a foreign country can bring 20 grams of gold while the women can bring 40 grams. In case more value items are brought they are subject to payment of customs duty or face legal action. The fact that the officials have now begun a thorough check about people possessing high value iPhones has become a headache for many.

Recently, a passenger had bought a costly iPhone in the city. He travelled to Dubai. When he was returning, the customs officials questioned him in detail. The passenger in question got angry but the customs officials reportedly have directions to check mobile phones costing over Rs 50,000.

Those bringing in costly iPhones have to get their phone released by paying 35 percent customs duty. Otherwise, they can surrender their phones for a certain number of days and then collect it when going back, the officials say.

Really annoying practice in Mangalore airport. I prefer flying to Kannur or Calicut and coming by Train or Road. Tickets are also way cheaper. The only way to make the airport officials realize their mistake is cut their revenue by travelling to/from other airports.

I always come to Mangalore via Bombay and return direct from Mangalore to Dubai, no issues no missing items from baggage as well, when I travelled direct to Mangalore by Spice Jet our luggage bags were opened before we get it from belt but they could not get anything since we pack only home cloths and houseware day to day items and expensive items we carry in hand baggage, for their surprise and hardwork they got nothing but we received our suitcases with lacks opened by breaking it and all items were shuffled and mixed like anything .

Best option is avoid reaching Mangalore directly if any alternate route is possible. Only few hours delay but you can avoid harassments and self imposed loot. The stupid Mangalore customs officials should be shown the door to outside world.

Totally agree We pay tax and purchase a phone from our hard earned money and these custom officials are literally ripping us off for no valid reason. Why only Mangalore customs have been reportedly given directions to check for iphones and doesn't happen in any other airports? Do we have any evidence of this so called self imposed rule?? Why do we even need to pay customs for something that we have been using (Which isn't an illegal possession)? We passengers need to unite and raise questions across such atrocities to stop these nuisance and HARASSMENT from happening again and again. Pathetic situation. We can neither enjoy our vacation nor travel peacefully due to these hooligans (so called custom officials).

Customs in Mangalore are the worst ones in the country. Probably they are overstaffed and dont get enough "bakras" to fool around. No other city has such harassment to passengers. These jobless customs people simple take up some silly issue and stop innocent passengers under some pretext or other and ask for their bounty. Some years back these customs people at Mangalore had started harassing passengers for wearing gold ornaments. Now some new racket. May be soon they will start checking the pants, shirts and dresses also. Passengers should join together and resist any such harassment and make these officials life miserable.

Totally agree. We already pay tax and purchase a phone with our hard earned money and these custom officials are literally ripping us off for no valid reason. Why only Mangalore customs have been reportedly given directions to check phones and doesn't happen in any other airports? Do we have any evidence that they have the right to do so?????? Why do we even need to pay tax on something that we are using (Which isn't an illegal possession). Is this the treatment given to NRI'S? Mangalore has turned from bad to worse due to these custom officials. It's high time that passengers need to stand together to stop such "HARASSMENT"

Anil Kumar Mangalore, one way you are right.other way good now they have ways to detect with sensors.Few years back it was still worst in Bombay air port.as we had to come frankfurt to Bombay first and then proceed to mangalore.I had come for delivery and stayed for 5 months in India .when returning customs forced me to pay customs on my jewellary which I was wearing, kariamani ,and a necklace.two each Bangles which were not even heavy .My own jewellary. women inside customs were taking out our rest money if left after paying for luggage or so from our handbag forcefully saying checking and were putting inside their underwear.Horrible .Thank God now we try to fly via UAE if possible otherwise have to choose Bombay to mangalore, have to wait in Bombay for a day .or in Hotel .So after that incident ,I dont bring any jewellary when come down.only single plain chain .when they keep it the I phone with them ,and take back when going back, what is the use of bringing ,when cant use?Stupid ideas of our customs.

Buying iPhone is waste if you think it has better security. That security is available only in USA. And besides most of the parts of iPhone are manufactured in China and they can just as easily hack into it. Go to Hong Kong, there are markets selling the iPhone without the apple logo, for cheap.
