Mumbai: Recreating the Magic of Konkani singer late Jerome D Souza

Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai

Mumbai, Nov 15: Fans of late Jerome D Souza  and discerning  Konkani music buffs will get an opportunity to sway to the tunes of the legendary Konkani singer and composer as the family of the late singer has decided to organize a concert  to pay tribute to him  on November 21st and 22nd  2010,   which will be held at  St Joseph Church Grounds, Mira Road,  in Mumbai.   The family also has plans to have a similar concert programme in Mangalore soon, as it happens to be his birthplace.  His children Ryan, Reena and Ritesh have come out with this idea of organizing this concert in memory of their legendary father.  As expected, the tribute  programme is going to feature some of his chartbuster  compositions that have left an indelible mark in the field of Konkani music.  The tribute programme will be resonant with such enduring Konkani numbers of Jerome  namely  “Shegunachi Sun”, “Nach Moga Nach ”, “So fhutinso gundu gao”  “Anjaa Sarken”, “Gundailo”, Chinchapokli and  many more.

Apart from the evergreen popular numbers of late Jerome,  the concert will also feature some of his unreleased tracks, which are  sure to strike a chord among all Jerome fans spread across Mangalore, Goa and Mumbai,  apart from Konkani music lovers spread across the globe, but who have retained their affinity towards their mother tongue.

In their efforts to make this  concert the biggest ever  Konkani production of this time,  his children have been making all out efforts to organize this programme in a befitting way. The concert will also feature  top singers  of Bollywood, musicians and dancers to make it a memorable event with a dose of Bollywood touch and glamour with state-of-the-art sound and lighting system.

The concert will also serve as a platform  for releasing late Jerome D Souza’s album comprising 12 of his best compositions and renditions.  A souvenir is also planned to be brought out during this programme.
Jerome,  whose contribution to popularizing Konkani music is second to none, was born in  Cascia paris in Mangalore in 1933  and blossomed as a singer in Mumbai. Jerome did his early schooling at St. Aloysius, Mangalore, where he showed a keen interest in music and it is here he gave went to his appetite to study western music.  At a time when Konkani music was at its nadir trying survive by merely by copying western or popular Hindi tunes  dubbed to Konkani lyrics, it was Jerome who revitalized the Konkani music by his flair and originality in music.   Credit goes to him for being the original composer and singer in the history of Konkani music by giving a new dimension to the then existing scenario.

With his dramatic phrasing, popular tunes  and a rendering style of his own,  he succeeded in giving a distinct identity to  Konkani music.

His contribution to Konkani music is legendary in it sown way as  Konkan Kogul late Wilfy Rebimbus had publicly stated that it was Jerome who inspired him to compose Konkani music. As  a composer, singer par excellence, Jerome had won the hearts of all Konkani lovers, wherever he went and the forthcoming  concerts in Mumbai and Mangalore are sure to recreate the magic of Jerome once again through his memorable songs.

The family of Jerome has established “SHRI JEROME D SOUZA MUSIC FOUNDATION’, a trust formed  to promote  the growth of Konkani music and art, as Konkani language and culture has witnessed steady downslide in the recent past.   The family is seeking the support of fans and well wishers of  Jerome in the form of sponsorship or advertising in the souvenir   in making this concert a grand success.

Late Jerome D'Souza would be remembered as one of the best Konkani singers. I still remember his nite in Don Bosco Hall more than three decades ago when he visited Mangalore and rocked the city and since then I became his fan. Although he is no more among us, he would always live with us from his beautiful and unforgetful songs. I wish all the best to his family members who are going to organize a concert to pay tribute to this great legend.

I am extremely happy to read the news of concerts being organized by late Jerome Dsouza's family to pay tribute to him. I wish the trio all the very best in their attempt to recreate the magic of Jerome's songs.
I was fortunate enough- like Louie D'cunha,to sing along Jerome when he returned to Mumbai in 1976 and had two Nites organized. We also recorded his new konkani songs like Taxichalanewala,So futinso goond gao etc.with my friend M.P.Rodrigues,lead female vocalist Lourdes and some others for HMV.I sang a solo named "Hi Raath Neketranchi" for the nite.

After the rehersals behind Gloria church (small hall) at Byculla we used to travel home by harbour line. During that time he showed me the half composed song "So futincho goond gao" and hummed the tune. The captioned picture you see was ed by me from among 3 other photos he asked me to for the handbills for the show and for his next cassette to be produced. Our friendship lasted for some months only as I was transferred from Bombay and never saw him again. When I saw his obituary photo in Times my heart wept.

Truly the pioneer of konkani music/songs Kalaratna Jerome Dsouza deserves to be given the "Life time achievement award" by the organizers of World Konkani Cultural Program at Kalaangan in the coming weeks. I earnestly request Baab Eric and Baab Louie (Mandd Sobhan) to consider this proposal and honour him with this award for the service he has rendered to Konkani music.Long live Jerome's songs.

It is a great idea to have songs of Jerome the king of yesteryears' konkani world. His songs speak a lot about the time in which they were created. Most of all his song 'Mathie pondlo Shanthi muzo Gamv' conveys the futility of the materialistic world and the peace of afterlife. I simply cannot but ponder over that song and try to find the true meaning of life.
Long Live Jerome and his songs. This programme is befitting tribute to the singer and I wish that it may be repeated in Mangalore.

Jerome was finest Konkani Musician par excellence. Unfortunately his early demise killed many more achievements from him. Konkani lovers should support the family and the trust in his honor. A website and Award would be descent Daiji can take the lead.

I am very happy to read the above news of Jerome's family who has now come up with a great idea of organizing an event where his popular songs will be staged. I was a big fan of Jerome. The first time I saw this great konkani singer and composer of original tunes and music in konkani was at Lawrie D'Mellos 'Vodangheli Soirek' drama staged at Milagrace School compound, Mangalore in May 1964. Jerome sang 'Sobith Thuka Manglur Shera' and 'Pondaar Thujha Bosoon Moga' songs so gracefully that I fell in love with is beautiful voice and style of singing on the stage. Next year in April 1965 I got an opportunity to sing with him in Srimathi Roze Karwar Street's drama 'Jivithacheo Dhon Vatto' at St. Mary's School Hall, Byculla, Bombay. I sang my first song on konkani stage 'Podlem Maka Sopan' of Jerome's composition. From then till he moved to Chickmangalur with his entire family I was with him singing in konkani dramas, on All India Radio and HMV.
I salute Agnes, Ryan, Reena and Ritesh for organizing a concert in remembrance and a tribute to the legendary konkani songs and music composer and singer my friend Jerome D'Souza. I wish them all the best and a great success. There are many beautiful songs of Jerome's that have not been released. I hope, you will bring out an Album of all the songs he sang on the stage and on All India Radio programs so that the present and future konkani loving/speaking people will get an opportunity to hear these songs and cherish his memories.

It is quite amazing to know that the Jerome songs will be staged in Mumbai and Mangalore. Why not in Dubai? Incidentally I was just listening to some of the old Jerome numbers (though the CD was not of good quality) and refreshed old memories. It would be nice to have a collection of Jerome’s popular numbers on authentic CD’s. All the very best to Ryan, Reena & Ritesh.
