Udupi: At last, city can boast of ultra-modern signal lights system

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Nov 17: Vehicular traffic in the city has been increasing every day. Because of the lack of a proper signal lights system, people are facing a lot of traffic issues. During the weekends, vehicle drivers are forced to set aside additional time to wait for their turn. Their predicament is set to end soon as the haphazard traffic movements are expected to become a thing of the past.

People have been, demanding for a signal system for a long time. Currently, a modern signal lights system has been installed at the Tiger Circle Manipal and now it is on an experimental run. Within a couple of days, this system will become fully functional.

Signal lights will be installed in 12 important junctions in the city. In tune with the economic bid, the agency has to remit s 20, 000 per junction to the municipality per month. Annually the municipality will get a revenue of Rs 28.8 lac every year from these 12 junctions. Municipal officials explained that if any lacunae or complaints are received in the signal lights maintenance, the contract with the agency can be cancelled.

The signal poles will have televised displays which will beam awareness about road safety, health etc when the vehicles have stopped, apart from commercial ads. The agencies will depend on the revenue from these advertisements to meet the money they have to pay to the municipality.

Signal lights will be installed at Kalsanka Junction, Old Diana Circle, Jodukatte Junction, Bannanje Narayana Guru Mandir Junction, Shiribeedu Junction, Karavali Junction, Ambagilu Junction, Tiger Circle Junction in front of MGM College at Kunjibettu and MIT Junction.

This will be a remotely managed integrated traffic update display system and it is being implemented in the city for the first time. The district administration, municipality, police department, regional transport office and local MLAs who met, have finalised the plan. The signal lights will be installed in phases in the coming days.

Although these signal systems are the need of the hour, local authorities and the concerned shall firstly surface the roads properly without any potholes, patches and moreover leftover on the roads like jelly crushes and stones.Muncipal bodies have to first give priority for basic amenities like smooth finishing of the roads, adequate street lights for clear vision at night, widening of roads and mainly maintenance. We usually see new roads are constructed and within a short span maybe after a couple of rainfall, they get terrible to travel. Cleanliness on the road sides should be a priority. Heavily fine people who litter the roads and illegal constructions. This can be done when all the residents of Udupi can join hands together to keep the city clean. Meanwhile, municipality and the concerned local bodies have to play a major role to keep the city clean and green so that we can proudly represent Udupi as a Smart City in a couple of years.

Few years back, traffic lights were installed at all these and some more junctions, but never worked. At some of the junctions, they still exist. Wonder who pocketed all the money?

This is good. But no one talking about street lights from Kalsanka to Manipal. The Nagarasabhe only gives assurance and does no work on this. Aged people already finding it difficult to cross the road because of the railings on the divider. And upon that this street light issue.

After collecting whopping toll they are unable to fix street lights on NH66 from Udupi to Surathkal, resulting in numerous accidents in NH 66 at night. Can not see road dividers and heavy focus of vehicle lights from opposite direction! Wonder where the vehicle tax money toll collection goes????

The signal system at Tiger Circle is a hassle. 120 sec intervals between changes makes no sense considering the density of traffic seen at peak hours. A max of 60 sec duration is more than sufficient. Please implement systems correctly instaed of introducing it just for the sake of it.
