Udupi, Oct 29: A fishing boat that had left the Malpe seashore for fishing hit a rock near Malpe when returning to the port on Thursday October 28 morning. Six fishermen who were inside the boat were rescued.

The boat bearing the name, 'Shree Navashakti' owned by Bharathi Thingalaya from Kallianpur had sailed off from Malpe on October 25. On Thursday, at around 5 am, the boat was on its way back to the port when it went out of control due to strong waves very near the port, and hit the rock with force. The bottom of the boat was completely damaged. As such, water gushed into the boat and it was about to drown. People in some nearby boats rushed to the spot and rescued the fishermen, apart from pulling the boat to Malpe port.

The stock of fish caught by the fishermen, fishnet and other equipment inside the boat were washed away in this incident. Loss of about Rs 20 lac has been estimated.
