Belagavi man celebrated birthday of dead wife before poisoning 4 kids, himself

Belagavi, Oct 24 (IANS): More shocking details are emerging from the suicide case reported in Belagavi district of Karnataka. According to police, the husband, not being able to cope with the death of his wife, had celebrated her birthday before poisoning his four children and himself.

Gopala Hadimani (46), a retired soldier was found dead along with his children Sowmya Hadimani (19), Shwetha Hadimani (16), Saakshi Hadimani (11) and Srujan Hadimani (8) at his residence in Boragal village in Hukkeri taluk on Saturday.

According to police, Jayashree, the wife of Gopala Hadimani who was infected with Covid-19, died due to Black Fungus on July 6.

Gopala suffered deep depression after the death of his wife. He had celebrated the birthday of his wife Jayashree with his children on Friday night.

The police said that after the celebrations, he gave water mixed with poison to his children and later he also consumed it. He had left a note stating that 'no one is responsible for the death of his children and himself'. He had also kept Rs 20,000 cash beside the note for the final rites to be conducted. Relatives and neighbours remembered that the children were excited to go to schools which were reopening from Monday.

Until now the state has reported 41 deaths due to Covid-19 depression, including five deaths that came to light on Saturday. The deaths have happened due to the fear of infection, losing dear ones and financial loss due to pandemic. Udupi district in Karnataka tops the deaths related to Covid depression with 11 cases while Bengaluru is in the second position with 9 deaths.

The Karnataka government while taking a serious note of the deaths due to Covid depression has appealed to people not to lose hope and take extreme steps. Govind Karjol, Minister for Water Resources, who is also in-charge of Belagavi district has made the appeal.

OMG. It is time we took serious steps rather than lip service on mental illness. Educational campaigns to educate people to identify it in themselves as well as others and fact that it is treatable must be carried including centers which can treat either in person or online.

It is really a sad status of a soldier doing this kind of a misdeed. If he is a soldier he is supposed to be sacrificing his life for anyone in danger. Also having 4kids if he was not able to manage its a total mismanagement of his own family. May they rest in peace.

Very sad and tragic incident but an eye opener for all as to how our systems in the society work. Being a ex-servicemen is there no system exist to extend help to such family from ex-servicemen welfare board of the Indian Army. Don't they have counseling service after retirement and periodic meetings with ex army personnel. Very strange and tragic that he killed his innocent children as well in desperation. Leaders are busy talking all nonsense while the masses suffer.

Yes he has done it,killing himself, and all his children. So sad thing.I can beleive him saying he was depressed after wifes death, but killing children ?Why ?Yes govt.says ,dont take extreem step. But noone gives any help to such cases or people.People are depressed like here a military man must have already in his life as soldier ,now in real life. Why his relatives or friends didnt notice of his depression ?May these kids souls may rest in Heaven.

In India mental illness and depression re not taken seriously , those in depression are ridiculed which pushes them deeper into depression and many attempt sucide , those motivational quotes and speeches are useless when a person has lost all hopes in his life , all he needs someone to sit beside him and assure him support

Never kill the children as they are innocents. Don't worry about their future, none knows exactly what they will become.

Very well said. I wanted to write the same thing. Children will do well for sure. Suicidal people should spare their children at least. It is horrible sin.

The need for counselling people who are depressed with the loss of their loved ones due to Covid and post Covid related illness is all the more important than mere celebrating the administering of 1 billion vaccination doses. Loss of lives is very painful whoever it may be. The neighbours, friends and relatives should pitch in to stop this depression syndrome and give hope to those in pain.

For a individual its become nightmarish to lead a life peacefully. On that when you realize you have responsibility of 4 more life ,burden is immense . This man could not take it up on himself! At least if society was more open minded, and mindful of others.. may be ..may be he would have left that kids to live by their own !.. Time wreck mind so much that ...mind forget its just matter of Time. Give TIME THE TIME.

our army soldiers are known to be ferocious and put up with any situations...very surprising to note that this retired soldier killed his daughters and self and could not take the grief of his wife's passing away..may be after retirement he became more emotional as he stayed with his family...RIP to all those who lost their lives..this was not heard before 2014
