Mangaluru: Baby exchange allegation - Court allows DNA test to decide parenthood

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 19: Relating to the charge that the baby born in the Lady Goschen Hospital here was exchanged, the district court has permitted to conduct DNA test.

The baby had been kept in the intensive care unit of the hospital because of health complications. The parents had accused the hospital authorities of exchanging the baby, as they pointed out that the doctors, who had told them that their baby was female, later said it was male.

Now, as per the court instructions, the DNA samples of the baby and its parents would be collected on Tuesday October 19, and sent to the laboratory in Bengaluru or Hyderabad. The report will take about three months to receive. On the basis of the report, further investigation will be undertaken, said Bunder station police inspector Raghavendra.

The wife of Mustafa from Kundapur had given birth to the child in Lady Goschen Hospital here. The parents who believed that the baby was a girl, later found out at the time the baby was taken to another hospital, that it was in fact, male. The authorities at the hospital had said that there was an error on the part of the staff during data entry. Dissatisfied by this clarification, Mustafa had filed kidnap case in Bunder police station.

This is absolute tragic. There is an absolute need for professional in Govt hospitals with cctv monitoring. Lot of these nursing staff don't take their work seriously knowing that it's govt hospital. While there are some absolutely wonderful hardworking people, also the other lot ruins the reputations of the hospitals. Unfortunate and sad. The bigger question is what happens to the baby for the next 3 months till the result comes?

Fishy or not, such incidents shud not happen in the first place. Moreover, similar complaint is present in the past. There shud be a system in place to streamline the documentation of such sensitive aspects
