Mangaluru, Oct 14: From the last two years, Ullal municipality has been encouraging people to sort out solid waste at source, and use wet waste for growing vegetables etc after preparing manure at homes. As reward for its successful use of solid waste by creating awareness, the municipality has bagged the state government award.

With the participation of women's self-help groups of the municipality, wet waste from households is segregated and people are encouraged to undertake vegetable cultivation unitedly. Lions Club too has joined hands in this endeavour. In about ten spots in the municipal limits, with the help of women's self-help groups, wet waste is converted into manure and vegetables are grown.

Congratulations to the effort done by waste collectors of Ullal Municipal waste collection team. It would be a much easier Task for them if citizens seperate their wastes. I personally don't give waste to the collectors as 90% of our waste handelled by ourselves (reduce, reuse, recycle). When ever happens to talk to waste collectors they say same thing. "Every type of wastes like kitchen green waste, leftover food, hard waste like plastic covers of different daily consumables, sanitary pads, glass, old batteries etc are stuffed in a plastic carry bag and given to the us" I think educating people in a better way should be the first step to Clean City.
