Maulana assaulted in Chikkamagaluru, threatened with gun for defective number plate

Chikkamagaluru, Sep 27 (IANS): The incident of a Maulana being assaulted for defective number plate and threatened with gun came to light in Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka, following which the police department swiftly apologised for the police excesses towards the victim and assured action against the officer.

The police have also assured that such incidents would not be repeated.

The incident took place on September 25, when Imtiyaz Maulana, a religious leader was stopped by Chikkamagaluru police for having defective registration number plate on his two-wheeler.

"I had got my wife discharged from the hospital. I was suppose to take classes. I was in a hurry. I asked the police to let me go. I was asked to speak to the sub-inspector inside the police station. I repeatedly asked him about what is the issue about defective number plate," the Maulana said.

"Since there was no response, I started asking others that how could they just say it is defective registration number plate, that's when a policeman dragged me further inside the police station and hit me with a stick for about 25 to 30 times," he said.

"The police officer took out his gun and threatened me. Later, I was kept in the station for an hour. Afterwards, I paid Rs 500 fine and the police let me go," he said.

Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) reacted strongly to the incident. Afsar Kodlipet, the General Srcreatary of SDPI condemned the incident on social media. He stated that the incident had taken place close on the heels of a sub-inspector who asked a Dalit youth to drink urine. That SI was arrested. "Police atrocities are on the rise in Karnataka and Home Minister should initiate action in this case," Kodlipet said.

Kodlipet told IANS that Hakay Akshay Machindra, the Superintendent of Police has called and apologised for the incident. "The SP assured of action against the police officer and also assured that such incidents won't be repeated in future. We are happy with the response," he said.

When contacted SP Hakay Akshay Machindra said, he was attending a meeting and would respond later.

After having been meted with 20~25 lashes, why did the Maulana pay Rs. 500 fine? This guy is clearly trying to get attention. If it was only Rs. 500 fine, he could have done that even before he arrived in the station. Police on the other hand are overreacting and are still under the influence of successive appeasing Governments. If the same was meted to a non-secular person, they would have ignored any such complaint. They should be impartial in dealing with any offense.

Probably few irritate officers that they will not pay fine & drop names of hardliner organizations & leaders due to which cops have to show them treatment & what law is.

It is alarming that normal people who comment sensible otherwise are supporting police brutality against this guy , just because he belongs to particular community..Please tell me even if there is a defective number plate, is it ok to assault him ? Fine him , impound his vehicle, no problems , but why assault him for this small issue...? Do you guys endorse police brutalizing you our your loved ones for license or number plate issue ? Why so much hate ??

Does defective licence plate calls for physical assault, detention and threats at gun point???????……..Where in the law this punishment has been stated for this offence??????…..It’s definitely stated in BJP’s Nagpur constitution only against minorities and its opponents. May be this officer was trying to appease his masters in Delhi and Bangalore. But anyway he has caught eyes of his murder accused, tadipar bosses.

I had a defective number plate fixed to my car. It was only three digit's. I said I did not fixed this number plate. , the car where I purchased they have fixed it. So the police said you have to fix a 0 in front of the number plate. Example the number plate shows KA 19 MD 369 must change as KA 19 MD 0369. O.K. I said and fulfilled within 3 days. Problem was solved. Since then nobody stopped my car.

This is the problem... Innocents suffer and real perpetrators of crime prosper. By the work of some hooligans whole community is targeted. Some dumb teach them even too support their brothers in crime and they do !! It's a mess out there.... No wonder films like ' My name is Khan and I am not a Terrorist ' and such nonsense films are made here !No reasoning at all. Some one here as usual contributes his gas to the fire by asking ' Why are minorities only targeted? ' and goes to have his drink sowing seeds of venom. His job for the day is done !Thank God there is no one yet here blaming our PM for this episode and defective number plate... Some here may even say that Modiji hid the original number plate..Such is the situation here.Paranoid. Law must take its course here too and offenders punished. No one can assault anyone in our cpuntry for this is not Taliban... Basic, decent education must for all in this country.
