Mangaluru: Marriage promise, rape - Man sentenced to ten years imprisonment

Mangaluru, Sep 23: The second additional district and sessions special court has awarded ten years rigorous imprisonment to a person after finding that the charges of promising a girl to marry her, and raping her were proved. The person who was found guilty happens to be Umesh Poojary (31) a crane operator from Beltangady Kalinje village.

It is said that Umesh kept the information that he was already married, a secret. He developed physical relationship with a lady belonging to scheduled community from Mulky Thokoor by promising to marry her. He had raped her a number of times beginning from December 5, 2014. He also lived with her in the same house for a considerable time and the lady's two pregnancies were aborted. When she became pregnant for the third time, she pressured him to marry her. Then Umesh revealed that he was already married with a baby. He then deserted the lady on February 16, 2016. On March 22, 2016, the lady filed a police complaint.

Judge of the court, Ajay Dhanpal, who conducted the hearing, found that the charges levelled against the accused were proved. He passed a judgement on September 21, sentencing the guilty to ten years of rigorous imprisonment apart from imposing a fine of Rs 10,000. He also has been given a year of imprisonment for cheating with promise of marriage and fine of Rs 1,000.

Public prosecutor, Jyothi Pramod Nayak had argued the case on behalf of the prosecution.
