Daijiworld Media Network - Kasargod

Kasargod, Sep 19: In a proud moment for the people of Kasargod, a diplomat with her roots in the district has been appointed Indian ambassador to Poland.

Nagma Mohammed Mallick took charge of the office earlier this month.

Nagma had served as ambassador to Tunisia from October 2012 to November 2015, and as ambassador to Brunei from December 2015 to December 2018.

Daughter of Mohammed Habibullah and Sulu Bhanu, residents of Fort Road here, Nagma is an alumna of St Stephen's College and Delhi School of Economics, where she pursued a bachelor's degree in English literature and a master's degree in economics, respectively.

Her father Habibullah too has served the central government, working in the overseas communications department. The family shifted to Delhi after Habibullah was posted in the department. Nagma was born and raised in the national capital.

Nagma began her career in the foreign service in 1991. Her first assignment was in Paris, as part of UNESCO's Indian Mission. She has served in various central departments, including in the capacity of spokesperson in the ministry of external affairs, and was staff officer to former Prime Minister I K Gujral. She was also the first woman deputy chief of protocol (ceremonial).

She was appointed director in the Eurasia division where she looked after India’s bilateral relations with Russia and the CIS countries. From July 2010 to September 2012, she was deputy chief of mission in the embassy in Thailand.

She also served in Nepal, where she was in-charge of the commercial wing at the Indian embassy, and in Sri Lanka as counsellor in the Indian diplomatic mission.

Under the current government, Nagma was appointed head of the policy planning division of the foreign ministry from February 2019 till January 2020, and then additional secretary (Africa) till August 2021, and as head of division for relations with Eastern and Southern African nations.

Nagma is married to Mallick, a lawyer based out of Delhi, and the couple is blessed with a son and a daughter.

It goes to prove beyond doubt that education makes all the difference, provided people want to take up the opportunities to build a good life for themselves rather than being public nuisance by whiling away their time in nefarious activities.

It was gratifying to read from Ms. Nagma Mallick’s cousin, Mr. CA Abdullah (Mangalore/California), the difference education makes to people irrespective of place of birth, caste or creed. That she comes from a illustrious well educated & connected family who despite all hurdles have succeeded in life speaks volumes of an era where Indian’s were not discriminated on the basis of their faith or food habits. Unless and until we think of India First no amount of fake speeches will impact our lives. Our good wishes to this young successful lady diplomat, May her tribe increase and be an inspiration to all Indians, “mere pyaare ’ deshavassiyon”

Sir, glad to observe a few of your community members, have an illustrious career, in India and the USA..There is a certain amount of despondency, which has invariably led to alienation, which requires corrective actions, hope the community will ponder and reflect on the present turbulence, especially in North Kerala district !!!
