Mumbai's Flyover Project Delayed by Environment Ministry

New Delhi, Oct 10 (PTI): The ambitious Pedder Road flyover project in Mumbai which is being opposed by locals is likely to get delayed further with the Environment Ministry asking the Maharashtra government to hold public hearing before seeking its clearance.

The proposed 5.6-km-long flyover, which will stretch from L L Marg at Haji Ali till Marine Drive near G B Pant Marg, is expected to ease travelling from the suburbs to the city along Peddar Road, one of the narrowest roads connecting the two parts of Mumbai.

However, in a recent meeting the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Environment Ministry asked the project proponent to conduct a public hearing as per provisions of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) notification, 2006, taking into account the opposition by locals.

EIA is the study conducted to predict the effect of a proposed activity/project on the environment.
