Saudis Arrest Filipino Catholics at Mass: Report

Riyadh, Oct 6 (AFP): Saudi police raided a secret Catholic mass in Riyadh last week and arrested a dozen Filipinos and a Catholic priest, charging them with prosyletising, a local daily reported on Wednesday.

The raid took place as some 150 Filipinos were attending the mass in a Riyadh rest house on Friday, the second day of the weekend in Saudi Arabia, Arab News said.

The twelve Filipino men and the priest, whose nationality was not specified, were "charged with prosyletising," the daily quoted an official from the Philippine embassy in Riyadh as saying.

They were all released Sunday on guarantees by sponsors or embassies, the report said.

Saudi Arabia bans the practice of any religion aside from Islam. However, small, low-key prayer services inside expatriate compounds and in Filipino gatherings are tolerated by officials.

With more than one million workers in Saudi Arabia, Filipinos comprise the bulk of the Christian community inside the kingdom.

Filipino activists confirmed the arrests to AFP, saying they had been released, but could not confirm the arrest of a priest.

    in saudi arabia all kind of people gathering at a place is offence it is aginst to thier rule. saudi arab is not a democratic contry.proceson,strikes,forming political party or even forming a labour unions are band in saudi arab. even muslims cant gather or celebrate any kind of events at saudi arab.one must respect the countrys rule if who want stay with them.god is great if one dose not like the behaviour of saudi govt. there is no force them to stay .world is large enough to search the bread to all. dont fight.respect the countrys rule.

    To Mr. Naser Mangalore, Muslims go round the Kaaba stone at Mecca and kiss the stone. Why do the Muslims worship stone at Kaaba? Whose creation is that? What is the necessity and importance of that stone created by the creator?

    We read so much about Muslims demanding their 'rights' the world over.
    Why is it that no one questions the fact that no other religions are allowed free and unfettered practice in most 'islamic' countries? Indeed as we read, low key religious services are 'Tolerated'?????
    Practicing ones religion in most cases needs to be done in 'secret' but does it really require the participants to court arrest?
    Perhaps Europe rather than ban the burqa should start arresting the violators.

    Well worshipping other than Islam is strictly prohibited in KSA, however services are being conducted privately with insecure feelings. While in KSA during the LAST " SALLAH " prayer I was in my car forced by Mutawa's carted me in their GMC truck with other non muslims , locked for 3 hours inside a closed room without fan full of dust, later released. However non christians were slapped on their faces by Mutawas( religious police )not to venture out during prayer time. This shows Zero tolerence for non muslims in KSA, practicing other religion is a crime.

    islam teaches the relegious freedom for everybody, but shockingly it doesn't exist in their holy land itself. it looks like they force people to follow what they want, somewhat like taliban style. Why they are so scared when other relegion people do their ritiuals, do they feel very insecure. hope god give them some wisdom so that all relegion people will be treated with equal rights.. god bless them

    In Saudi Arabia to worship God is a crime and arrested for worshipping God. They accused Christians purposely by framing proselytizing charges. All were bailed out by their sponsors. In the so called cradle of Islam everything is possible Witchcraft, Black magic, alcohol, drugs, maatam mantram, prostitution, robbery and killing but to worship God is a crime. Praise the Lord.
