CWG May be Called Off: New Zealand Chef de Mission

CWG May be Called Off: New Zealand Chef de Mission

Auckland, Sep 21 (IANS) The Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, scheduled to begin Oct 3, is under serious risk of being called off, the New Zealand team's chef de mission Dave Currie said Tuesday.

The unprepared state of the athletes village has stunned foreign delegates in the Indian capital and there was a mountain to climb to have it ready for its official opening Friday, when the first athletes are scheduled to arrive, Currie said.

Currie has accepted an offer from the Games Organising Committee (OC) to shift from their allocated accommodation - which he described as "substandard" - to another tower in the village premises.

Currie Tuesday said the prospects of the Games being cancelled were now very real.

"That's not a decision that we'll make (alone) but there are some realities. If the village is not ready and athletes can't come, obviously the implications of that are that it's not going to happen," he was quoted as saying by the New Zealand Herald.

"I think they (Commonwealth Games Federation) are in severe difficulties. In the time frame that is left, unless there is tremendous effort and energy and problem-solving ability to get it done, I think it's going to be extremely hard to get across the line.

"They've got a little bit of time but it's kind of two seconds to midnight really."

Currie said the half-built nature of New Zealand's proposed accommodation was "extraordinarily disappointing" to his delegation when they arrived last week.

There was a large amount of post-construction cleanup to be completed, along with issues surrounding cleanliness, plumbing, wiring, internet and mobile phones.

"It's pretty grim really and certainly disappointing when you consider the amount of time they've had to get the village ready for athletes to arrive," he said, noting there was still remedial work to be carried out on their new area.

New Zealand Olympic Committee officials were flying to India Tuesday to inspect the village while Fennell also planned to arrive soon to "assess the situation first hand and provide our member countries and territories with a frank assessment".

Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Michael Fennell Tuesday described the village as "seriously compromised".

"Final preparations for the Commonwealth Games Village have been of concern to the CGF since viewing the residential zone along with a number of Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs) advance parties on September 15th," Fennell said.

Fennell said problems arose due to constant pushing out of building deadlines. Now increased security around the site was slowing the building process.

New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) president Mike Stanley and secretary-general Barry Maister left for New Delhi Tuesday.

Stanley said New Zealand was working with five other nations - England, Scotland, Wales, Canada and Australia - in assessing preparations for the Games. He said the group had voiced their concerns "at the highest possible level".

"What they are frustrated by is not enough action, not enough quick action, to see that, between the time we have now and the athletes coming into the village, or even the opening of the Games, things are going to be ready," he said.

Stanley did not want to speculate on how big a risk there was that the Games might not be able to proceed on time.

"There has always been a chance that something could happen to the Games," he said.

WEAK / UNSAFE BRIDGE COLLAPSES ON RIVER.

Man has built bridges since time unknown and seen bridges collapse also since time unknown. Any bridge collapse tells us that either we did something wrong or we do not know something. Here are some instances of unsafe bridge collapses and lessons learnt:
Our Town Planner’s Leaders, Engineers & People day by day becoming deaf or blind- Eye to Rebuild 52 Year old delicate Road Bridges, but they waste time to Rename towns or Landmark, to gain Popularity to run domestic colonialism.
Mangalore has High Status Colleges Like MIT, KMC, KREC, NITTE etc… They Masters Top Brains as Doctor or Engineers, they Built Town Structure without Proper Infrastructure, Daily Needed by everyone, Rebuilding all old Town River Bridges, Underground Road Drain System.
    In India

    Mandovi Bridge
The Mandovi Bridge in Goa collapsed in 1986, The faulty design of the balanced cantilever bridges was the prime cause for the collapse. The investigations also showed that the deteriorated parts were either not maintained / repaired for a long time or were left unattended till the collapse..

    Newaj River Bridge
Nation’s PWD need to best Architects/ Engineers, like T.Iyengar who Made Tunga-Badra Dam. To make Safe, Need to Rebuild Strong Bridges across on all Mangalore to Udupi Rivers,
To Avoid Accidents Each River must have twin bridges to move one Way Traffic smoothly.
While ing the builder he must do all job at high Standard

I have been reading the comments passed by many readers which is so disgusting and abusive. To bring to notice to all those shameless readers who have passed disgusting comments that CWG is not any political parties dream. Here every political party who has never played any national sport today have become president, CEO's, Sports Ministers of sports bodies.

One supporter of BJP is attacking supporter of congress and the real issue is diverted resulting in attacking each other. This is the problems with Indians that we have created division through casteism, groupism through different political parties, partition of ourselves through wealth and religion and multiplied our problems to such an extent that today any political party has no solution. I have been watching the BJP making comments on congress "Not to shame India" but does the BJP realise that Next to Kalmadi in any CWG meeting there is a BJP leader V.K. Malhotra sitting.

Every political party are responsible for the volcano they have created which is bound to explode any time. Also It is my sincere advice to readers that being the future of this country they should use their intelligence in creating a United India than dividing ourselves politically. God Forbid if anything happens in India the political leaders are the first to run out of the country just like it happened in Kuwait where the sheikhs ran out when Iraq invaded. Time we think positive and move forward positively.

    Dear jatin, mlore,

You must be young and hence gets excited. Be calm and then you can make sensible comments.

I have seen people from the enemy country writing non sense comments (in various blogs) about India including CWG and try to tarnish our image. It used to hurt me then but when I see the comments here by so called pseudo nationalists I am just speechless. These people can go to any extent for defending their pseudo ideology and their party.

Jathin, for me country is more important than any party. Unlike you, in my earlier comment I have only supported my county and I do not care about Congress or BJP. Organising committee has members from all parties more so from BJP. Mr. VK Malhotra is holding responsible position and it seems most of the contracts bagged by people close to BJP. Now why the nationalists of BJP did not raise the red flag? Why they are still holding on to their positions?

Just because Congress is in power you wish the CWG to fail. Now I find no difference between the wishes of enemies of India and BJP supporters here. Both comment negatively about India.

No doubt this event has been mismanaged by the organizing committee and the guilty is required to be punished after the games are over. But for now, it is the wish of every true Indian that India succeeds in conducting this event.

I will be very happy when Visitors go back with a slogan “ Incredible India!”

India is a big country having enough resources to host any international sports event. We have successfully hosted Asian games SAARC games. However this time arround the pride of the nation is at stake. thanks to the corrupt politicians& officials. There is nothing wrong in claiming the bid to host the event. It is the problem of lack of planning & proper ution. The corruption can never be peaker than this. It is sad that at the time when Indian sports persons are excelling internationally in various forms of sports, these things are happening. Adding to the agony the floods in Delhi & surroundings, Ayodhya judgemnt all are arround CWG day. One thing was very much organized- "the corruption". Morover, opposition has suddenly become silent (!)(may be part of the corruption). I am proud to say I am an Indian but now it sounds like a joke to others. What worse than this could there be?

It is very disgraceful and feel ashamed as an Indian that our country has gone to the dogs. I will put the blame on these politicians, bureaucrats and all Governments servants responsible for bringing shame and looting the wealth of India. Our freedom fighters fought against the britishers to save this country being abused and looted. But today our leaders and all Government servants have abused every indians and looted Indians to such an extent which is unbelievable. The Time has come to check the personal wealth of every Government servant and politicians on a year to year basis. In Last 10 years USD 125 Bn has been transferred overseas by corrupted politicians and Government servants. If the present leaders do not set right their home in order we are in for a bigger and bigger disaster i.e., every indian will revolt against the government creating more and more naxalites and maoists. I do not see any leaders elected will serve us but themself. It is time voters stop voting making vote casting into 0% putting an end to democractic rule completely and follow USA Election model.

India has more important things/problems to handle, than to please the foreign players and the staff.

In  my opinion it would have been good if the same money was spent in developing Kashmir and provide employment to the youth there. Also provide loans to those willing to start tourist industry and other small businesses etc.

I am surprised to see the comments of some who believe New Zealand Chef de Mission more than our own people. This is the tragedy of we Indians, we still blame our own system than feel being proud of the quality of stadiums and the commonwealth village built for the purpose. Commonwealth games do not belong to any party(Congress) but it belongs to all of us (Indians). Some people are making comments against Congress but may be unaware that the Commonwealth committee has also senior leaders of BJP as members.

I have seen in the Television of the world class stadiums and also the sample flat in Commonwealth village and there is no doubt it remains world class. May be some of the work may be unfinished but to say that Commonwealth Games may be called off is little too much.

These Europeans and other foreigners always have prejudice about India and Indians and hence their approach is always negative about India. I had the opportunity to go to different countries and seen the quality of life/technology there but our India is not far behind. In some cases like telecommunication we are much ahead than these countries.

AGREED KALMADY IS A CROOK AND HAS GULPED MONEY FROM EVERYWHERE BUT HE IS IN CWG NOT AS CONGRESS REPRESENTATIVE, HE'S BEEN IN THE CWG FROM BEFORE DURING NDA'S REGIME.SURELY HE SHOULD BE PUNISHED FOR HIS DEEDS BUT AFTER THE GAMES.

THERE IS A SAYING THAT"JAB BARAAT LEKE AACHUKE HEIN TOH KAISE BHI SHADI TOH HONI CHAHIYE" SO STOP CRIBBING ALL YOU BJP PEOPLE AND CO-OPERATE WITH GOVT TO MAKE THE GAMES A SUCCESS.

Wake up Indians(CWG)before it is too late to over turn this shame democracy and change the nation to be more proud and strong. The count down of the commonwealth games has started. There is a hardly few days left for the big event to happen and the why things are moving it will be extremely surprising if all ends well. Our sports minister Mr. Gill come to know people were not going to come and watch game. People want to see top athletes who can inspire them. It is like having test match cricket without Sachin or Dhoni. Commonwealth games should have ideally served as an opportunity to instill sports spirit. Shame for CWG officials and government. Who is responsible for these blunders? Finally as an Indian citizen, I am just hoping that CWG does not become a source of embarrasment for our country. Lets hope for the best.

Dear Daiji readers, Although Unpreparedness of the games venues is the bare reality now, it is also a tactic of kiwis and kangaroos to tarnish the image of asian countries like they do in cricket. Kangaroos had indeed started the campaign for boycotting the Delhi games since 26/11. It is the time that our media and each citizen of india to show the solidarity with the Games organisers to make this event successfull. Solidarity, at least towards the front line labours and volunteers who have shed their blood and sweat to make this event happen.
And let us not spare our beuro's and Poli's who brought shame to the nation soon after the games.
We Indians often forget the past issues quickly and look for next.

WHAT A SHAME ! Newzealand is on the verge of cancelling CWG because there are no proper toilets in the CW Village. No door and No bolt to lock door in the toilet. It reminds me of Mangalore bus stand toilet where one has to sing because no bolt for the toilet door. Now athletes should practice music and song before taking part in the sports event ! A.R.Rahman took Rs.5 crore for the CWG title song. Now officials asked him to edit the song as it is not upto the mark ! The only one who got benefit is Suresh Kalmady. He knows the difference between Commonwealth & Come on Wealth ! India is the 3rd most powerful nation-US !! Should we laugh or cry ?

Dear Kishore(udupi/Dubai),there are many working abroad including me,if we are worried about showing our face at times of our failures i think we need to stay back in India itself.By now people know how great is India, and they can well distinguish between its peoples failures and a nations.Beating recession was one example(thank fully india dont have to worry about repaying loans), so dont worry,CWG will not be called off.If they are, than atleast be happy delhi people got some new venues.Atleast budding Atheletes can make use of this facilities.Otherwise that was also not possible.

I doubt CWG will be called off,However firstly one cannot blame on any govt for this.Surely the blame should be on the organising committe (CWG India).Confused the other day in media briefings many spoke that its a world class venue and now the village/the accomodations are not ready??.Its so Embaracing how poorly can one handle these things.Hope for the best for a miracle at the last moment, there are many who are envous & dosnt want India to succeed, and we are giving them what they want.Hope in future the members are choosen wisely who can really handle such a mega event.Incase if the CWG is not happening At least lets be happy that our Atheletes can make use of this facilities for their future progress or trainigs, there was hardly anything avilable to our men&Women to practise these individual sport.

My friends Nagesh Nayak,Rajesh,Ajit....hold on.Don't jump into biased conclusions on CWG. First of all happening of CWG is not the yardstick to measure the acheivements of UPA Govt. If you analise the facts the reason for probable delay for CWG is not because of UPA Govt. The delay is due to organisers lack of planning and busy contractor schedules with close deadlines. The western coutries have praised UPA Govt's initiative in CWG framework. Please read the report quote "India Third Most Powerful Nation: US Report " unquote. Had it been possible if the NDA in rule? You radical guys were jumping with the slogun "India is Shining" when NDA was in rule. But no one could see that. But Now you can't digest the development of World's 3rd most powerful nation.

India claims that it will soon be a super power. With all the time in the world the venue is not yet ready coz all were busy how much % cut or so called kickbacks can be looted. The tax payers are ripped off. Now with 12 days left India claims that everything will be ready. 2014 London games many of the venues are nearing completion.
Now India will form a commitee to find out why venues were not ready.
Spend another few crores on the commitee and for the investigation.
Nobdy will blame Kalmadi or Shiela Dixit. Everybody will say "Look India failed to conduct the games"
India is a great country and here is the greatness. Why do we have to really come to this extent where our guest have to say that we cannot come coz of the venues???
What's gone to happen to the money spent? (Tax payer's money)
    What a shame.
It's really going to be disgusting in a few days.
