New Delhi, Sep 20 (IANS) The by-election for the Valpoi assembly seat of Goa will be held Oct 18, the Election Commission announced Monday.
Counting of votes will take place Oct 21.
The notification will be issued Sep 22 and the last date for filing nominations will be Sep 29. Candidature can be withdrawn till Oct 4, said a statement issued here.
Ths seat was lying vacant ever since sitting legislator Vishwajit Rane, who contested as an Independent candidate, resigned to join the Congress this June. In the 2007 assembly election, Rane had defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Puti Gaonkar.
EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) will be used in the by-election, the poll panel said.
The Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate effect in the district, the panel added.
