Mangaluru: Cruelty against animals - Stray dog shot dead near Shivbagh

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 2: An unknown miscreant shot a street dog dead behind a jewellery store at Shivbagh here on the night of Thursday July 1. The incident has come as a shock for the animal lovers.

Head of Animal Care Trust, Suma Ramesh, has filed a complaint in this regard in Kadri police station. Workers of the trust carried the carcass to the veterinary hospital on Jail Road here. Post-mortem was conducted and an air gun pellet was recovered from its body, it is gathered.

Suma Ramesh is livid at the incident. She has demanded for identifying the person who shot the dog dead and to initiate action against him.

In the recent past, two cases of cruelty against animals had been registered in the city. In the first incident, a dog was tired to a motor bike that was then driven away, thus dragging the dog along. This incident took place in April. This video clip of the incident had become viral in the social media, and the police had arrested two.

In the second incident reported on May 22 this year, a puppy that was being raised by a family well, was tied to a motorbike and then dragged away in a violent manner. In this case, Eraiah Basayya Hiremath (45), a native of Kalaburagi, was arrested.

The police are investigating the current incident now.

Animal care trust does it’s best to sterilise stray dogs and vaccinate them. But the people who have dogs and bitches at home have production company and leave new ones on the streets. Irresponsible people are to be blamed for creating stray dogs. These dogs are sometimes a blessing to the locality as they serve them by guarding the locality at night. No outsiders can roam about in the dark. They bark and make them scared. This dog shot at must have been chasing the shrew all time and hence this shrew a kind of thief would have shot the innocent dog. I humbly request people who keep domestic animals at home if you cannot find homes for the young ones do not let the animals to reproduce and create problems for others and punish the dumb animals. Sterilise animals and keep them at your homes. Live And let live.

Stray dogs are a menace, no doubts about it. People who vouch for non-violence, should urge the government to sterilize all the stray dogs. If this had been done efficiently, there would not have been any stray dogs on the roads. If you can not do it, you don't have any rights to term killing a stray dog as cruelty!!!

Stray dogs should not be killed but vaccinated and sterilized. If there is a complaint of dogbite or attack the dog should be taken away and trained for proper behavior by the municipality and then put to good use like detection of drugs. Pet dogs should be given good potty training by their owners so that they (the dogs )do not poop or pee in the neighbors yard or gate. If the do, the owner should be taken away with the dog ( and both sterilized and trained.)

After several complaints to MCC with no action, I am requesting daijiworld to bring their attention on dog menace in our locality. I am a resident of the Jayashreegate, bikarnakatte; people are facing the problem of stray dogs . Recently, there has been a sudden increase in the population of stray dogs in our neighbourhood behind the lane of mosque. Vicious-looking dogs roam the neighbourhood in packs and this phenomenon is causing terror to spread amongst the residents. Their groups are dangerous as they started attacking the passerby. They run towards motorbike which may lead to accidents in the area. People lost their sleep as dogs bark whole night. This problem is a headache as a person who has night shifts facing the worst situation. Aside from bodily harm, the stray dogs also ruin the cleanliness and neatness of area. The hungry wild dogs frequently mess up the rubbish in the rubbish bins by knocking them over and tearing the plastic bags used to hold the trash. Not only is it making the roads and alleys dirty and smelly, but such occurrences also attract flies, rats and other pests. Lastly, when the children are walking or playing around the locality, they get very scared by the sudden outburst from the dogs, which can be fatal at certain times.

Everyone who is complaining about street dog menace, please note these things: 1. Animal care Trust is sterilising dogs on behalf of the MCC. In case if you find any unsterilised dogs in your area, please call ACT and lodge an official complaint. The dogs will be picked and released post surgery. 2. Stop throwing trash out in open areas. And if possible, try to feed the dogs at specific spots in your locality. The only reason the dogs dig at trash is because they are underfed and hungry. So if you can feed dogs in your locality , a lot of issues related to street dog menace comes down drastically. 3. Dogs that bark at vehicles do it because they have been ill treated by vehicle drivers in the past. Hence they feel threatened. Again, if you want this to stop, then identify those people who shout at the dogs and scream at them when passing by. Trust me, doing just this much will change the dogs into calm ones. You cannot expect a hungry, starving ill treated animal to behave well , just the same way that you cannot expect a hungry ill treated human to behave well. - Animal rescuer since 20 years

the dog must have bit him and he could not bite in retaliation so shot..though it is cruelty if someone has done it in self defence it is fully acceptable.. moreover stray dogs are found on streets only in third world countries like India. They should be culled.. so that pedestrians, especially morning walkers like me will not have any problem..

My dear brother. You didnot experience any problem with street dogs. Everyday I see in different places they are chasing the 2 wheelers. They cross the road running and many injured badly and fractured also. Vehicles damaged badly. I too experience this every day. Take some dogs and feed them at home and give care. OR you open ashram. All mangloreans will help you because this is the need of the hour. Mangalore city corporation is deaf towards the voice of the people. They hear your voice.

Local authorties should take care of these stray dogs. They should arrange them food & shelter, same like goshala for cows or those public have pitty on these dogs should adopt & take care at their homes. Most of the accidents occur because of these stray dogs, specially for the two weelers. Alsn o children feel scare to walk on streets because of these stray dogs. Some times they attack for food. Also there is a high risk for rabies as they are not vaccinated. So local authorities should take proper action to control this stray dogs for the public safely.

Sometimes yes street dogs are nuisance . But killing this dog like is really inhuman . The culprit should be caught & his picture should published in news paper. Meanwhile corporation should do something to catch these street dogs & keep them or make a place to keep them somewhere .There will not food problems has there is lots of waste from market which is collected.

Heartless indeed....man's best friend shot....today's Deccan Herald page 13 in RIGHT TO EQUALITY, High Court New Delhi states : STRAY DOGS HAVE RIGHT TO FOOD, FEED THEM. It further stated that stray or street dogs have right to food and citizens are entitled to feed them without causing harm or harrassment to others. Animals have a right under law to be treated with compassion, respect and dignity.

Jossey S Nallasopara, sure it can be a best friend and as well can turn out a bad ones,if you dont act follow rules.SK mangalore is sayiing they sterelize dogs and leave back.well what brings it who will care for them? They have hunger and follow their instict to run around for food ,who has to check if they are sterelized or not.?This is a man made problem. Not every household can afford to have a dog.If one has a animal has also care for it :How many times street dogs have falle over children bite ,or small children will be a opfer .Stop this letting stray dogs on road. Not enough only sterelize and leave on street.People too must not let bitch puppies on road.Sterelize them and be at home. They can be very good guards .But dont shoot and let on roads. We shouldnt handle animals as per our fashion .Why buy costly dogs and country dogs on roads.?we care costly dogs very carefully.same way do other dogs too.One more word,If shot a cow or a Pig as Shanker says will not remain long on raods. They will be utilized same as other ones.
