Mangaluru, Jun 22: The district has been conducting more and more Covid19 tests. During the last few days, there have been sudden ups and downs in the number of new infections. From the last two days, the positivity rate has shown a declining trend. At the same time, the positivity rate, which was 4.95 percent on Sunday, jumped to 6.44 on Monday June 21.
During the last one week, 66,028 persons were subjected to tests. A total of 4,962 persons were found to be corona positive. This means that the positivity rate during the week stood at 7.51 percent.

As already admitted by the health department, the second wave has been stronger as compared to the first one. The health department said that during the last three months, Covid19 was confirmed in over 50,000 people.
In the coronavirus first wave till the end of March this year, Covid infection was confirmed in 35,697 people. During the next three and half months till June 17, 51,903 were infected.
In the first wave, senior citizens were the most affected. But in the second wave, youngsters suffered more than the others. As many as 4,994 women and 5,437 men in the age group for 21 to 30 were affected in the second wave. A total of 4,260 women and 5,220 men were infected in the 31 to 40 age group. Experts believe that the youngsters were infected more this time as they did not take enough precautions during the second wave.
The district has been witnessing increasing deaths due to coronavirus infection. For the last some weeks, the number of death have risen to reach the double digits. The doctors believe that not getting their health checked immediately after witnessing symptoms of the infection, getting hospitalised only after the condition becomes serious, vaccination not moving at the speed it ought to, general negligence towards Covid19 in the minds of the people, covering up primary contacts and details of outside visits could have contributed to this phenomenon, the experts say.
On Monday, people crowded shops dealing in essentials. People in large numbers were witnessed at the fish market near the State Bank and also in front of the meat stall. More loaded trucks, apart from cars and auto rickshaws were witnessed on the roads. Bunder road was full of vehicles and vehicles got stuck in traffic jams. Police had a hard time controlling the traffic.
