Mangaluru: Father arrested for dousing son in petrol, setting him ablaze

Mangaluru, Jun 22: In a tragic incident, a father reportedly tried to end his son's life by dousing him in petrol and setting him on fire. The father has since been arrested.

The accused is identified as Vishwanath Shetty alias Thippi (52) and the victim is Sharmith Shetty (25). The incident was reported at Tharduliya in Jeppu on Monday June 21 night.

The duo had engaged in a verbal battle on Monday earlier in the day. In grudge, the father tried to end his son’s life, who was sleeping in his room, by pouring petrol on him and setting him on fire.

Sharmith who was in a critical condition, was rushed to a private hospital in the city. Kankanandy police later arrested the father.

The victim has suffered 70% burns, but is stable. It is gathered, verbal duels were a daily affair between the father and son at home. The father used to consume alcohol and get into arguments quite often. 

The father-son duo were involved in animal husbandry, it is learnt.

    Varun, first of all to show your high esteem did you complete your degree in mathrabasha. Why our constitution is still run on British way who have introduced the system 100s of years back. Their source of income was the cow they owned and one day all of a sudden the cow went missing and the son is not opening up where the cow went,

    Jossey S,Nallasopara,it is not only unemployment and inflation is the cause for such crimes,but mostly alcohol consume in unlimited way with what they earn take it to buy alcohol.What remains is their head full fiasco,and starts to fighting.Noone is in the state to check what one doing to other .Mostly in villages thats the daily story.Father doesnt recognize son,son dont know who is the mother .or daughter.sad things .Uneducated know only one language ,alcohol ,and agin alcohol.mostly these backward caste .when son is having 70%burns ,will e difficult to treat him.may require long term treatment,with infection etc.Hope he regains health fast.
