Udupi: UPCL Pipe Bursts Again – Saline Water Enters Houses, Fields

Udupi, Sep 1: As if to add to the utter frustration of the people, who have for long been facing innumerable problems because of the release of untreated saline water mixed with coal dust into their fields and canals by Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL), the pipeline of UPCL burst for the fifth time on Tuesday August 31 by the side of national highway 17 at Yermal Tenka village near Padubidri.

As a result, saline water from the pipe gushed out from the pipeline, inundated hundreds of acres of agricultural fields nearby, turning them slushy and saline. The water also entered the house of Padmanabha Acharya and some other located near the spot. The pipe had developed leakages at this spot in the past too, about a dozen times.

Because of frequent leakages from this pipeline, a house belonging to Timmu, a dalit woman has partially collapsed. The ire of the people has turned towards the district administration and other departments, who have been found to be doing nothing to stop the company from carelessly heaping miseries on the people.  It is generally felt that improper, unscientific execution of pipeline work is the cause for frequent leakages and bursting of the pipeline.

The hot, saline water being discharged by the company and water mixed with coal dust released by it have been playing havoc with the lives and means of the villagers of Ulloor, Kemmandelu, Kolachoor, Naindikoor and several other villages located around the thermal power plant of UPCL. The people are tired of waiting for the administration to act, and their protests have not got the desired response. Therefore, they are planning to ensure that their next protest programme will have a definite impact on the company, and pressurize it to take remedial steps.

THIS IS HAPPENING BECAUSE OF: 1.]CRIMINAL NEGLIGENCE OF UPCL,2.]DONT CARE POLICY OF THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION, 3.] STUPID PRIORITIES OF HOME MINSTER, 4.]"SAVE MY CHAIR AT ANY COST" POLICY OF CHIEF MINISTER. THERE ONE WAY TO WAKE UP THESE CULPRITS AND STOPPING THIS. PEOPLE WHO ARE AFFECTED JOIN TOGETHER, COLLECT THE WASTE COMING OUT OF UPCL POWER PLANT AND SOME HOW DIVERT/SEND IT TO THE HOMES AND FAMILIES OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED CULPRITS. WHEN IT AFFECTS THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES JUST SEE HOW THESE CULPRITS WILL TAKE ACTION.

His Excellency Dr. VSA is very busy taking care of Beggars Colony in Bangalore and not even getting time to read news of Udupi District. Once you get any projects approved and got it done, the authorities are least bothered later onwards. For attending the problems you won't get anything and don't like to spill the beans as well.

In event of such problems, none of the elected representatives, govt.officials have no time to visit the spot and listen to the effected poor people. Any social problem our people also not much interested to support the victimes. If any communal/religious issues - a lot of halla -gulla and it apperas front page of all news papers. Finally money, musle power plays it role. I am happy that to some extent few expressed their concern. Can I expect that the Dalit organisation support Smt.Timmu and her family.

Where are the scum bags who call themselves as nationalist or true Indians and call everyone else as pseudos,is this what they wanted to prove by cheating the poor farmer community, what happened to DR.Home Minister/dist In-charge is he still cutting ribbons, or making irrelevant statements of PDF but cant take of his district. Brastachar Janatha Party(BJP) is only interested in saving cows not farmers. Certainly this a good lesson for the people for electing a nickma party to power.

The people have become helpless because Govt.,Police,Dist.aministration has been acting as the agents of this company, they are all involved in corruption. Political leaders do nothing other than talk nonsence, misguide people & make money by corrupt means. The state Govt. intentionally refusing to listen peoples voice
Remaining silent on this issue will not solve the problem,we should stand together & fight for the justice

UPCL either cutting corners by installing substandard pipes or adopting deliberate strategy to evacuate the people living nearby to grab land for plant extension purposes. Under any case, UPCL got to be charged for both negligent and criminal intent.

The great contractor who has uted this project has not given care to the quality of work thus resulting in leakages of deadly effluent mixed saline water. It is a lesson to authorities to follow the project specifications and international standards in uting these kind of prestigious projects.India has talent and expertise which is utilised by other nations to build their infrastructure. Why can't the Indian government stipulate strict guidelines for the construction of mega projects.Dear District administration and state government, please wake up?The company which has built this power plant has to fix all these defects because the work is still under Defects Laibility period.Hope its clear to all.

This is the unfortunate result of people giving in too easily to our dirty politicians who supported the Company whose business is to make profit out of unrestrained pollution endangering our lives and livelihood. Even after 15000 deaths we almost forgot Bhopal. But, we have a new Bhopal in the making in Udupi district. No one will remember that the officials local politicians minted money except those who would suffer. This Company picked the materials from Chinese junk yard and has no experience whatsoever in Engg contract of a power plant. It has taken it up for the first time after Chinese abondoned it. It is still not too late for the people to wake up. Unless we fight for our rights we do not deserve it.
