Mangaluru, Jun 21: A container truck had fallen into the sea on Sunday at 10.30 pm at NMPT, proving to be fatal for the lives of two men inside it.

While the body of the 26-year-old driver, Rajesab was recovered, the rescue teams carried out a search operation for the missing person, 22-year-old Bhimappa. 

As per the latest update, both the lorry and the body of Bhimappa have been recovered from the sea.

Mangaluru, Jun 21: In a shocking incident that occurred at around 10.30 pm on Sunday, June 20 at New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) in the city, a container truck fell into the sea as the driver lost control over the vehicle.

The truck belonging to Delta company bearing registration number KA 22 C 8257, fell into the sea near berth no. 14 west. The name of the driver name is Rajesab (26) and another person Bhimappa (22) of Chettinad company was sitting in the truck. The truck was empty at that time and had come to port for shifting of iron ore from ship.

The pilot of the tug boat which was passing by from the spot informed to VTMS who in turn informed CISF control room. Immediately, CISF QRT and CISF’s patrolling boat reached the spot and with the help of a tug boat, a search and rescue operation was carried out.

One person was located and rescued by CISF marine duty personnel and immediately sent to AJ Hospital where the doctor declared brought him dead.

Later it was confirmed that he was the driver, Rajesab, of the ill-fated truck. Bhimappa is still missing and search operation is still in progress.

    Someone said India has International standards.... standards may be International... but are they implemented and seen to be adhered... So having standards and not implementing and seen to be followed is like not having any standards..... No SOP's at all. Another person said... worked in the port for 23 years.... just in that port so what the person know about the safety of that port only.... not International standards and how they work and what they are.... They need to go to International ports to see the procedures, rules and regulations.... how one has to follow and the consequences for not following.... India is a country where its' citizens are laid back and easy going...... there is no seriousness in anything they do... driver probably passed his driving test by bribing.... with him other person also a victim... anyway RIP

    Dear Roger, Palimar, If rumors are to be believed, the incident happened in the night when it was raining heavily and the duo had dinner with some appetizers and returned back. This is a recurring accident happening at the same place it seems and moreover, the qualified driver was sitting in the conductor's seat and conductor was getting training for driving under adverse environmental conditions. So, all in all a potent mix of wrong person behind the wheel (avoidable) at the wrong place (avoidable), adverse environ conditions (unavoidable) and appetizers (avoidable) together contributed to this disaster. Safety was never a concern.

    Nobody can take out the "Chaltha Hai "Attitude from Indians . Indians are mostly irresponsible and lack civic sense . Who is responsible for inculcating such habits in them is a million dollar question despite being so rich and deep in spirituality . But outside of their country they are the best law abiding expatriates.. Its a paradox.

    NMPT may be a model port in DK, but it lacks basis safety infrastructure. Even i have worked in this port for some years and there is nothing called safety. Stevedores who are privately hired, have no sense of any safety. At any terminal, it is the port switcher trucks which has to receive the containers and shift it to the terminal. But at NMPT, private looters are been given the privelage, who again drive on the keyside of the wharf, as if they are in a rally. Precious life is lost and there might be some percentage of negligence from the 2 ill fated guys. However, the whole blame should be on NMPT as it is the port who has to ensure proper lighting, security of unwanted visit onto these deep berth. 14 west is a deep berth for large vessel and the tide on this area is very severe and aggressive.

    You are right. Most of these service providers have no knowledge of marine safety. No training imparted to them. The Quay side must be manned by the Port trained staff; the port inspector or Jetty Master dedicated to a particular quay must be present, check the credentials of the suppliers for safety training etc. No sea survival training is given to most of these vendors. The vehicle drivers (in the Middle East and Gulf and Far East) are never allowed to park their trucks facing the sea; it is always parallel to the quay. We can never deny -- we are a boastful people; CHALEGA is our attitude; hence we end up paying a price. The Harbour Master must ensure that audits for the vendors and their vehicles are carried out once a year; no vehicle without a marine pass is allowed to enter the port. I have been involved in Offshore Marine activities, Major ports and Customs in the UAE. The admin in these countries are so strict.

    It is sad two lives are lost. Before we comment and blame an Authority we need to rectify the facts of the incident. I am not sure about few people's careless comments blaming NMPT. I have been working with NMPT for last 23years, while handling Cruise Liners. NMPT has one of the best safety measures is what we have noticed and is also shared by most ships that have come to our Port. While systems are in place, security is doing it's best, we have found few people around being careless and not adhering to safety measures put in place by authorities. few people inside port drive like they have no fear of the systems, neither gravity of the risks involved in doing so. Few people believe in breaking rules, just to feel like they are Hero figures, hardly realizing that they could be reduced to Zero Figures. It is really unfortunate to hear this incident. Hope inquiry will bring the truth out. But let us refrain from pointing fingers immediately at such a great Institution like NMPT.

    Eulalia No one is blaming the Port Authority. The Ports, Airports are not a place for compromises. The SOP of the Port must be adhereed to for which we have Official Bodies like ABS, DNV, etc to certify that Safety has been paramount and no loopholes are left out. Are you a trained Mariner? If not, do not take this as personal - You need to know the pros and cons of the Port Operation. How do you expect a Truck to go down in a Port unless there is lack of training on all fronts?

    RIP. guys dont conclude on anything and request you not to blame without knowing the reason behind mystery. There will be lot of reasons for the cause of accident. Recently my cars front tyre got bust and i was driving at a speed of 90km to 100km in highway.. Lucky escape it was. Guys so be safe and always drive safe.

    Very sad incident indeed. But don't give blind comment on Countries safety standards without knowing what Safety standard they follow. I am from marine background, All Major & minor port follows international standard of safety level. However accidents are unpredictable that is why it is called " Accident" . Tell me which sea port in the world did not come across accidents. Just because its Indian Port please don't give loose comments. Unfortunately for some people western shirt is also as good as Chocolate to compare.

    mithun, dont be blind and try to show your smartness by saying that you have seen the world. I have worked in Dubai in A class company for 25 years..Do you sincerely think that Indian safety standards be it port, airport or even metro match that of Dubai? Patriotism is good but blind praises bring down the efficiency.

    Don't take it personally. I have worked in Dubai for 13 years, Singapore for 2 years & Amsterdam for a year. whatever i have commented is based on my knowledge & experience. I know how much a common man earn & spend in dubai. Speaking of airport / roads / metro in dubai. yes it is one of the best i have seen but how much you pay for traffic fine/ airport charge/ Parking charge etc. lets take above case. Do you know what is a minimum qualification to apply for a post of driver in Dubai Dry Dock or in DANATA ? . If same implemented in India 60% of current drivers will loose job. What will they do? and most important are you willing to pay the increase in cost on day to day items?

Probably very few countries in the world have the most modern airports and sea ports like the one that India has. Unfortunately a minority number of people can never digest and accept the changes that have taken place. India is not third world country now, India is one of the top 6 nation of the world in GDP.
