Mangaluru: Cong accuses sand mafia, district administration for damage of Maravoor bridge

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Jun 15: Former MLA Abhayachandra Jain alleged that the sand mafia and negligence of the district administration have caused damage to the Maravoor bridge.

Addressing media here on Wednesday, June 15, Jain said, "The bridge that connects the city to the Mangaluru International Airport has been damaged due to the negligence of district administration and sand mafia. Excessive sand has been removed with the help of a backhoe in the surrounding areas of the bridge in the name of dredging. Even after finding out about it, the people's representatives and district administration are silent. Before laying the foundation for an alternate bridge next to the old Maravoor bridge, the concerned officials should take the required measures to prevent catastrophes. Now, there is fear of a similar incident taking place at the Maravoor dam and the railway bridge. The sand mafia has been carrying out their operations clandestinely right under our nose. Earlier it took 20 minutes to reach the airport now after the incident it will take one hour."

Former district Youth Congress president Mithun Rai also demanded that the incident be investigated by the deputy commissioner immediately.

Congress leader AC Vinayaraj, Shalet Pinto, Anil Kumar, and others were present.

Sand mafia is a serious but different issue technically not related to bridge damage.

This is not because of sand mafia. Bridges are built from bed rock same like multi floor buildings. This is because of pilling error. Vibration from pilling or wall built to divert water they would have filled half river with soil then complete work then start other side work would have done. Job given to inexperienced contractor

Such disasters are bound to happen when the Government, Elected leaders, District administration, Fringe elements focus attention to facilitate/encourage Cow protection, pub attacks, places of worship attacks, party attacks, communalization of incidents, oppression of Dalits....

A lot more bridges on this river are in the danger of collapsing. The sand mafia is hand in glove with every political party which comes to power. The DCs, Thashildhars, local MLAs and local adminstration govt. officials and Police are all beneficiaries of the corruption. What does it matter if the bridges collapse or small islands disappear or the fish population reduces or salt water comes upstream and destroys the drinking water table to them? If the bridge collapses, it’s time to make more money by issuing tenders for a new bridge. We the common citizens have accepted our fate and have lost the will to fight back. No politician or government official is answerable to the public. When the politician-government official-police nexus is so currupt, there are no checks and balances in the system. Only God can save this country and it’s common man.
