Report sought on 'black fungus' detected among Covid patients in Karnataka

Bengaluru, May 13 (IANS): Karnataka Health Minister K. Sudhkar said on Wednesday that he has sought information from health experts about the 'black fungus' being detected among Covid patients in the state.

Mucormycosis, also known as black fungus, is a rare but dangerous fungal infection, which affects the nose, eye and sometimes, the brain.

Prior to leaving for a visit to Chikkaballapura district, Sudhakar said that he had held a discussion with the technical advisory committee and others and asked them to submit a detailed report in two days. "Based on this report, we will take a call," he said, noting that the government needs to know more about this disease and its treatment.

Even as the second wave of Covid-19 ravages Karnataka, cases of the rare fungal infection are on the rise among recovering and recovered Covid-19 patients in the state.

@Dev.Yes I fully agree with you.Instead of mobile and computer games, outdoor games are better, if you have to go 1-2 km better walk down rather than use a vehicle, 1-2 flights of staircase, better climb rather than use a lift.Use antibiotics and steroids only as a last resort. Avoid junk food as far as possible. Our body had many lines of defense just allow nature to work. I have never taken any allopathic, homeopathic, ayurvedic, unani or naturopathy medicines except prophylactic, I have never remained absent for a single day in my life as a student, or in my profession. My be it is not related to all that I have mentioned, it could be genetic or maybe God was kind to me, though I pray at home for just 1-2 minutes daily, and do not visit any religious place for worship.

Wonderful information I applaud. Yeah nice to know you too are one among some doctors I interact regularly even before Internet was introduced in our country they shared their case studies and their own health issues which changed their beliefs in alternative holistic approach towards treatment of ailments. I got more knowledge through books journals and later TV media. I too never have taken any medicines for common cold and fevers for more than 3 decades after learning how it helps to defeat the viruses. I too love to walk from Hampankatta to Bunder and back if I don't have any heavy bags. Surgery I've had when it was only solution. New nurse with change of duty asked the previous nurse who is patient as she was confused whether my attendee or me had surgery as we both looked healthy. As I learn more and more I find even a lifetime isn't enough. I always am open minded and ready to absorb new things without any prejudices. Thanks a lot for giving me your precious time and knowledge.

I think over use of steroids & antibiotics in the treatment of covid patients might be causing decline of their immunity too along with the viral infection. For this reason eat healthy, live healthy, do exercises & say goodbye to lifestyle diseases thereby improving your immunity to face any outside invaders from any form. Monty Doc your input is needed regarding this aspect too.

Monty, imho infection spread through contaminated dehumidifiers, unsterlized instruments, unclean water could be the reason for very high mortality rates in jam packed hospitals with sparse ventilation and, due to severe shortage of staff all these basic hygiene measures have to be bypassed & even a healthy recovering patient could get pneumonia & other infections like black fungus!

I agree with you.I still feel the medical equipment like oxygen masks and ventilators which are never sterilized are the cause, the reason is in nearly all patients there is a history of hospitalization. I have seen about 10 cases in 10 years (could be airborne) many years back, ( I retired 15 years ago),at that time it was considered a rare disease, and ventilators were not used at that time. It is a disease of the elite and you won't find it in slums like Dharavi. The antifungals ( oral as well as injectable ) are highly toxic, the margin of safety between the recommended dose and lethal dose is very narrow.

Black fungus or mucormycosis is a fungal infection where medicines and surgery do not help much, and is usually fatal. It occours mainly in immunocompromised patients and diabetics. It enters through the nose and then spreads to the paranasal sinuses, eyes and brain. Prevention is the only way out.

It's a deadly opportunistic fungal (spores that are found in the air) infection & needs immediate surgical intervention to debride or remove the infected parts which could be a jaw, paranasal sinuses or even the eye along with antibiotics; it's fast spreading & once it reaches the brain death is imminent!

Black fungus or mucormycosis could be caused by non sterilization of ventitators and oxygen masks at hospitals. The same devices are used in the next patient before sterilization after use in the previous patient.
